...maybe...he's not a pitcher so we could see him back around ASB next season...which leads me to:

Impending FA

Andrew McCutchen
Brett Gardner (12.5 mil Team Option for 2019...2 mill if the Yanks decline)
David Robertson
J.A. Happ
Lance Lynn
Zach Britton
C.C. Sabathia
Adeiny Hechavarria
Neil Walker

My take is Yes Robertson, Happ, Walker...No to the rest.

Any particular reason for Walker? Would prefer rounding out the roster with players like Hechy where either speed or defense is dynamic

Walker could play 2B if we just want to slide Torres over to SS (which is his natural position anyway), and is an option at 1B if Voit regresses to the mean and Bird doesn't pan out. Also a switch hitter in a sea of righties.

Yeah basically the above plus with Didi out now its more a need to keep status quo in check...but only a 1yr deal.

Also to clarify for D-Ro i would only want to give at most a 2yr deal. If someone comes in with an over the top deal im ok with him leaving. Happ....need to get this guy back in the fold.

Walker’s also 33 and hit .219/.309/.354. Outside of a few weeks he was a pitcher with a high walk rate

The lineup made a lot of easy outs. Almost 2000/6200 PA went to guys hitting under .240 (sorry Gardner). It’s not like they came with pop either. Baseball reference won’t compile their lines but as an aggregate it’s looking like combined they hit below .210/.310/.375

This lineup has a good foundation. It won’t take much to fill it out. The whole league is gonna need pitching, finding innings will be the harder balancing act. The bullpen has been one of the nastiest because of the depth of arms. Yet by years end it just wasn’t dominant. It doesn’t take much to go from one of the most effective ever, to guys who already peaked as a unit

Two years ago they brought in D-rob, Kahle and Adam Warren mid season, hopefully they stay proactive looking for outside additions

Really hope the Yankees don’t sign Machado. He would fit right in striking out every at bat, but maybe they should leave this one alone.

I mean, we know this team. They'll prioritize pitching but they'll have their hand in everything. Not the worst problem to have.

Machado has quite good contact-skills for a slugger.

However due to his attitude I no longer want him. He's gotta be the most unlikeable player in MLB right now.

I've been in the do not want Machado camp for a while. In fact I dont want anyone for more than 7 years at huge money

Happ

Paxton

Best opening day Yankees rotation in years? Or a bunch of big question marks?

It looks good on paper, but there are injury concerns (Paxton, Tanaka), and some old pitchers (CC) who won't go a lot of innings.

Last time the Yankees had a good rotation was in 2003 with Clemens, Pettitte, Mussina, Wells imo. All of those guys were above average and threw a lot of innings consistently.

CC is a future HoFer and was worth every penny of his first FA contract. At this point in his career you are basically hoping for 5 innings when he starts though.

Are the Yankees out on Yusei Kikuchi now?

A lot of that is on Boone though. He takes him out before CC gets in trouble or reaches a pitch limit. CC could go 15 up 15 down and Boone would take him out b/c he's at 85 pitches even though the Yankees are winning 6-0.

I don't like Boone, but I have no issue with how CC Sabathia is handled. In 2018, batters hit .250/.319/.397 vs Sabathia, which is not bad. However, batters taking their third plate appearance in a game vs him hit .328/.376/.547. This is admittedly a biased sample, as Sabathia often did not make it through the whole line-up taking their third plate appearance, so he faced the top hitters in a line-up more often.

But the point is, you shouldn't let Sabathia pitch to Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez third time through an order, as chances are he's going to get hammered. This is even more true when you have a deep and elite bullpen.

Contrast this to prime Sabathia, who could reach back for 97 mph deep into games and didn't have to nibble on the edges of the strike zone all the time. Prime CC in 2011 always went 3 times through a line-up and opponents hit .243/.295/.367 vs him in their 3rd PA, vs an overall line of .255/.305/.361. There was no drop-off in his performance deep into games. Treating old CC the same way is bad strategy.

Ottavino joins Chapman, Betances, Green, and Britton.

Hopefully that means no more AJ Cole and such riff-raff in high-leverage situations. Even Boone isn't dumb enough to **** this up.
