So, who's replacing Terry Collins next year? Dick Scott or Bud Black?

Even Giants fans would admit Bum is an *******. Quite good at the baseball though.

Bruce swinging at that garbage in the dirt after Rivera's lead off double was unfortunate. One of the worst trades of all time to give up a prospect for a useless pile of human garbage incapable of anything.

This is the Mets we're talking about. Perennial cheapskates.

The walk to Panik was the killer. He *has* to get him there, up 1-2, then he walks Gillaspie, and they *have* to pinch hit for Bumgarner. Of course he's got to get the pinch hitter (was to be Jarrett Parker) but if he does, things look good.

True but maybe they will wake up and realize they are wasting these young SPs best years. A ton of money is coming off, they better spend it.

Gonna have to spend a bunch just to keep Cespedes. Wondering about what they will do with Bruce, pretty affordable option at $13M but def have to trade him so they won't have much leverage.

We almost didn't sign Cespedes after last season because the Mets were too cheap. And that was after a 2015 season where he was a top 10 player in baseball. He didn't have as great of a year this time around and will probably command more than 25M when he opts out. Plus he'll be on the wrong side of 30 next season. I doubt we're gonna keep him.

Cespedes is a great hitter, but aside from last season, he's never had an fWAR above 3.3 whether it was due to injuries or lack of performance. Sandy has the right idea by giving him a front loaded offer with a one-year opt out to keep him motivated and will probably offer the same type of deal again this year. Cespedes loves NY enough that he might take it again.

The issue isn't money, it's where this team can actually upgrade and carry guys on the roster with so many health questions. They had the right idea last year with a Zobrist type that can play all over the diamond. No idea what to expect out of any of our infielders next year, but Rosario might be a top 10 prospect and ready by then.

Ok so if cespedes walks spend that money elsewhere. Fowler+chapman say. Mets better not cheap out

Yeah. Familia has no command and against patient hitters like the Giants he runs into trouble. Agree he's Benitez 2.0 and they shouldn't invest in him going forward.

Maybe I'm overestimating the intelligence of GMs but Bruce has been a negative player for 3+ seasons and is utterly worthless. He's worth about the vet minimum and the Mets should sever ties with him as soon as possible.

LOL at some of this Cespedes talk. The Mets' remarkable turnaround started in the middle of the series in San Francisco. When did Cespedes return from injury? Game 2 of the SF series.

This team, as currently constructed and as is most likely to be constructed next season, desperately needs him in the lineup.

Agreed resigning Cesp HAS to be top priority. Next is getting another good to dominant closer. We better not ****ing sign Bruce he is utter trash. We should start conforto and hope he turns it around and even then we have lagares and Nimmo as backup.

Worst part about Bruce "getting hot" at the end of the season is we had to start him in the playoffs and resigning him is now somehow justifiable. He has had very few moments as a good player and those days are behind him. He also played in bandbox Cincinnati

Mets should sign cespedes obv. If they don't however, they better spend that money to fill other holes. Rather than being cheap bastards

Yeah but he was traded at least in part because he can be bought out for just 1M after this season instead of paying him 13M for another year. They only took on 4.3M of his salary this year to get a boost to the playoffs when they were behind in the race. Since they didn't get to the NLDS, he should be bought out.

Though given that the Mets paid 10.5M/season for Michael Cuddyer when he was in his mid 30s, I suppose keeping Bruce is possible.

I'd like to see them re-sign Cespedes but given their history, I don't think it's going to happen. They see his age and declining numbers compared to 2015 and will likely think his numbers will continue to decline. They might view Bruce as a cheaper alternate.

I really don't think money is as much of an issue as everyone still thinks it is. It's just that you're comparing the Mets to the Yankees who can eat an ARod contract, spend $500m and still break even.

The Mets have some money to spend, but they want to do it efficiently. Monster contracts to players over 30 years of age generally don't work out. Yes, you want the biggest, shiniest, most popular toys, but you don't want to still be paying a fortune for them when they're broken and everyone else has better toys.

The Mets may not have Yankee or Dodger money, but I think they've shown with the Cespedes contract last year and even Wright + Granderson that they're willing to spend if it makes sense. I still think they made mistakes with Reyes and Murphy, but the Reyes thing was actually at a point they may not have had the money and even if they did, may have not done it for philosophical reasons, which I think they'd now regret seeing how SS has gone after they let him go.

Bottom line: Giving well in excess of $100m to guys on the wrong side of 30 never ends well.

Not interested in signing Cespedes to a long term deal. Like OneOut said, the mega contracts to players 30 years of age or older literally NEVER work out. Like ever. There is not a single example of a contract where the team gets full value over the life of the deal.

Usually the team gets a good return on years 1-3 and then any years after that is just such dead money that can't be cut.

Not saying giving 5/125 to Cespedes is a good contract in a vacuum, but the Mets are complete idiots with money. See Daniel Murphy and their pathetic inability to field a decent offensive team with the staff talent level being what it was at the start of the year making pennies.

But yeah any contract over 30 you're just praying they outperform the first few years because the latter years are automatic dead weight. There's probably been a couple I'm forgetting where it's worked out okay (maybe Matt Holliday?) but Cespedes is a big dog to be worth whatever he gets

Would be prudent to frontload contracts for 30+ year old players instead of paying them 25M when they're turning 40.

Considering it probably would have been Sergio Romo this has become all the more frustrating
