I don't think it's THAT crazy, at the point of the bottom of the 12th he knew he'd need AT LEAST 2 more innings of bullpen relief... it was the bottom of the mets order, and the mets did jack against him in 10th and 11th.
If you have a chance to bury a team, use your best pitchers. This 1980's mentality that you can only use your closer with a lead is known to be pretty absurd at this point and only followed by these managerial relics stuck in the past. You don't get that 2nd inning if you don't finish the first.
The kid was all over the place and did well against a mostly left handed portion of the Mets lineup. The only real RHB he faced hit the ball hard to CF. Leaving him in there with 3 straight RHBs coming up wasn't smart.
I guess I won't go nuts with Granderson in CF with a high strikeout (deGrom/Syndergaard/Harvey) or groundball (Niese) pitcher out there, but for the love of God, Lagares better be out there when Bartolo is on the mound.
EDIT: Just did the math cause I was curious. 174 of 490 batters faced (35%) coming into the game hit a line drive or outfield fly ball against deGrom coming into the game. Chance you gotta take I guess. 225 of 515 (43.6%) for Colon.
This is amazing, a packed house, a big game on national TV, back to back homers, it's been so long since my team has had a game like this. How great. Please let the rest of the season line the Wilpons' pockets so they spend in the offseason and keep this going!
OH MY ****ING GOD DUDA I WANTED HIM BENCHED TWO WEEKS AGO I MUST BE DEAD AND IN HEAVEN
It's amazing how thoroughly disgusted I was with this entire organization after it was leaked that the botched Gomez trade was about money and then they blew that game against San Diego. There's no way I could have been convinced that they'd end the weekend tied for first.
Seeing you guys post is like being with the second ex wife all over again. One minute the earth is crashing and the team is unwatchable , the next we are meeting up for WS and running 17 games over 500 with 60 left.
