Supposedly the Phils and Nats are both looking at Smoltz too, so looks like someone in the NL East is gunna try to stick it to the Braves.

Apparently there is some big injury news coming for the Mets, according to Will Carroll. A comment on metsblog says Beltran was in for hush hush knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and wonders if that's the news.

that would really really really really suck.

Carroll wrote this back in July:

Quote:
Beltran made the informed decision based on the near certainty that he will need microfracture surgery and could miss much, if not all, of the 2010 season. He’ll do everything he can to avoid it, but that’s the worst case scenario and he’s willing to give it a go. His success will be based on pain tolerance and management, as well as Jerry Manuel’s ability to spot him in and out. It’s unlikely he can play CF, though no one has said much about where he will actually play. It’s a calculated risk that Beltran and the Mets are taking. Given the success – or lack thereof – with microfracture in MLB, it’s a big risk and perhaps Beltran’s last hurrah.”

the comment policy on metsblog sucks, they have 70 comments submitted on the topic but they've only approved 9 of them, and that number hasn't changed in like a half hour ... I am dying to read what people are speculating it could be (and hope it's not really big).

I also don't get the idea of his comment "big news pending for mets, doesn't sound good". If he has a scoop, why wouldn't he break it. He's probably now got every beat guy and baseball guy trying to break the story.

2d source is describing this as "scope clean up" for beltran. but #Mets are acting like this was more than routine

Sherman's latest: "another source insists it was not microfracture surgery, but standard scope and Mets team phys Altchek and Mets were OK on this"

Thank god it wasn't microfracture.

Also it looks like whoever fed Sherman the info from that first tweet pwned him badly.

Mets just released a statement confirming the scope. But their prognosis was considerably worse than Heyman/Sherman. He won't be able to resume "baseball activities" for at least 12 weeks.

So figure June 1 is a realistic return date for now. 8 weeks of Angel Pagan in center -- he's not Beltran, but barring any further injuries and a decent job filling out the roster, perhaps they can hang.

This run of injuries though is just preposterous.

This is getting worse by the minute ... "Mets definitely claiming Beltran procedure done without their blessing, and are threatening some form of action"

Kevin Burkhardt: "As I said on #Sportsnite at the top of the hour, Beltran did this surgery on his own. Mets will hold a conference call tomorrow #bigtrouble"

The New York Mets just can't seem to get healthy.

Center fielder Carlos Beltran is a casualty again, as the team announced on Wednesday that he will miss the start of spring training after having surgery on his arthritic right knee.

Beltran suffered a bone bruise in June last season and was limited to only 81 games. Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, David Wright and Johan Santana also missed time for the Mets as New York's hopeful season turned into a 70-92 disaster.

The Mets said that Beltran suffered "worsening of osteoarthritis" in his knee during the offseason. He had not experienced discomfort at the end of last season and during the offseason.

Surgery to clean out the knee was performed by Beltran's personal physician, Dr. Richard Steadman of Colorado. The five-time All-Star is expected to be sidelined 12 weeks.

well least it's only 12 weeks. Microfracture would have kissed him goodbye for the season.

Beltran's done. I hate to say it, but he's always had knee problems and they are getting more frequent and more serious. ****.

Yea well I did not expect the Mets to be that great this year anyway, so if Beltran is not in the lineup at least my expectations go even lower and I will not be so mad about the season.

SOP for a Mickey Mouse organization like the Mets.

My expectations are pretty low for this season. Seeing that I'll be in America, I get to watch it all come crumbling down.
