Another victory after an early deficit, very nice.

The more I think about, no way minaya stays on if the mets miss the playoffs IMO.

We won yesterday. If we win today, that's two in a row. If we win tomorrow, that's called a winning streak; it has happened before.

Check out some of the stories written in the Daily News today.
After the way Omar handled the second press conference, it really seems like his job is in jeopardy.

Finally Omar has been exposed for the fraud he is.
I listened to the news conference again this morning and he sounded just awful.

I just read all the pre-april posts in this thread, and i think they pretty much sum up our season so far

I like that Omar has brought in a little extra SP depth (Redding, Garcia, Livan + Niese, Parnell, Figueroa and Armas still). I don't like that they didn't give Lowe that extra year he wanted.

Anyway, spring training has started. The season is right around the corner. Discuss.

Better. He missed half a season.

About the same, maybe slightly better now that he has some experience under his belt.

Worse.

Worse, Angel Pagan is irrelevant.

Hard to be anything but. (But if there's one guy who can prove me wrong, I'm guessing it's Luis Castillo)

Agreed. We know what to expect out of these guys year in and year out now.

Nobody knows, but we have a barometer of this offense from last year. Some guys will outperform what they did last year, some will underperform; net net, we should still be in an ok place offensively. There's always the possibility of acquiring another bat as well -- have heard reports that given the economic situation, teams may not be sitting around until July 31 to unload expensive players if their teams are struggling early.

Daniel Murphy is a toss up in my mind. They are putting a ton of faith in him, he is really going to be a key in the lineup.

I don't expect Delgdao to be horrific like the first half of last year, but hes not going to be as Godly as he was after the all star break.

It is hard for Castillo to get worse, but when your game is about stealing bases, beating out infield hits and bunt singles, a 35 year old middle infielder with bad knees just dosn't seem like a good fit for that type of game.

This also puts a ton of pressure on the big three. The type of pressure Manny could have relieved. Or even Abreu/Hudson could have relieved.

Thanks Metsfinsfan for not digging up any of my predictions.

But off the top of my head, I know I was far too optimistic about Murphy and Pelfrey. the other predictions are probably all inapplicable due to injuries.

I still think those two can become integral parts of a winning team, though. I need another year of disappointment with them before I'll accept that they're destined for utter mediocrity.

the problem is, murphy was never even a power hitter in the minors, he wasnt even a top 100 prospect when they brought him up, he did well in 100 at bats and everyone annointed him as awesome. He can possibly hit, possibly be a dave magadan type, but people were talking .300/20/90 from him. and they expected him to be able to play the outfield even though he has been an infielder forever ... and a bad one at that

Pelf -- also had a good 15 starts and was handed the #2 starter position by omar.

Omar really is the problem here

There is no way you are sucking me into the same debate we had pre-season about Murphy and Pelfry, particularly at a time when you appear to have been right.

Give me a holler next spring.

you got it

all ill say is they both could turn out to be great like you predicting, but counting on it this year was assinine from omar and he should be fired for it, along with having no depth in the minors, signing ollie, signing redding, not signing lowe, ibanez, or even abreau, etc etc.

From metsblog:
In a post to his blog, Bobby’s Way, Bobby Valentine said yesterday he will not return to manage the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan next season.
According to the Associated Press, Lotte management had decided before the season that it could not afford Valentine and would not renew his contract.
this will be interesting… the way i understand it, Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel are tied to the hip… in short, if omar is ever fired, the new GM will hold jerry’s future in his hand… but, under no circumstance will minaya be firing jerry… so, to wish for bobby may be premature… that said, should the Mets be looking to a new team, build around youth, speed and strategic, aggressive baseball, bobby would be the way to go… say what you will about him, but the man knew his baseball… in fact, i think he thinks he invented the game – and, as a fan, i like that
i bet bobby’s blog post perked up the ears of the Nationals…

Wow this is Matt Cerone saying this ... that there is no way possible for Omar to fire Jerry? Really?
Not that Jerry has to go per se, but this fact still annoys me

i think i have really had it with Omar

I've never understood the Bobby V love-fest.

The guy was almost universally disliked by his players (not to mention other teams).

I grant that he was kind of entertaining.

ive basically conceded that there is nothing less significant than the manager. it doesnt really matter if jerry is fired or not because somebody just as bad would likely take his place. im sure more than half of mlb fans get frustrated to no end by their managers.

a new medical staff on the other hand, that could do some wonders.

Upper management makes the world of difference.
If this team had strong management, we would have a lot less of the problems we have now.
  • The team needs better scouting
  • The team needs a better medical staff
  • The team needs a stronger ownership group

Guys,

If Jerry goes so does Omar, it Omar goes so does Jerry.

Omar should not be able to fire another manager without taking a bullet himself.

We all think he has done a horrific job, hopefully the Wilpons will as well.
If Citifield has a huge drop off in attendance in August and September, and season ticket sales for next season drops, the Wilpons should have no choice but to fire Omar and start over.

Complete autonomy.

I agree. I consider managerial changes mostly window dressing.
