I dunno..maybe, but the weather looks pretty bad. I wouldn't be crushed if Johan didn't have to go out and pitch in 30 degree wind chills.

it wasnt even a fallback. Minaya prefered ollie to lowe believe it or not

Where are you getting this from?

IIRC how the offseason progressed Omar targeted Lowe first but didn't want to give him that 4th year. The Braves did and Lowe signed in Atlanta. Only after all that all went down did Omar sign Ollie.

I think part of that had to do with Boras asking for too much at first with no one else really chasing Ollie.

Right, all things being equal, I would think he preferred Lowe over Ollie (after all, they pursued Lowe first). But things weren't equal, and being the Mets, they preferred 3/36 to 4/60, regardless of what pitchers and talent level they each possessed.

I seriously would rather have them cancel the game today then to have Johan pitch in inclement weather.

With that being said, I look forward to another season of Amazin' Mets baseball !!!

50 minutes until Reyes gets a single, steals second. Murphy walks. Wright homers. Delgado bunts down the 3rd base line, beating the shift. Beltran homers. Church singles. Schneider K's and Slappy GIDP. Santana goes 1-2-3 in the first and then the game is PPD.

I'm pretty sure the Mets offered Lowe 3 year and 15+ million. He didn't take it because the Braves offered him a 4th year. Ollie got 3 years $12 million.

here is one

"According to Heyman, Omar Minaya prefers Perez, but the rest of the front office prefers Lowe."

there were dozens of other sources at the time that said the same thing fwiw

the mets only official offer to lowe was 3 years 36 million

there were rumors they were willing to go higher, but they never did

feel free to look that up if you want, but its the truth

Yeah but it also says:

Quote:
Heyman says the Mets are discouraged by negotiations with Lowe, who is also being pursued by the Braves, ‘any maybe the Phillies, and maybe the Brewers.’
Which means that despite Omar possibly preferring Ollie they still went after Lowe as option #1. So either Minaya was a) throwing a bone to his staff or b) wanted Lowe then Ollie in that order.

i think minaya loves that he talked the pirates into throwing ollie into the nady trade, and then he falls in love with they guy

it's early ... and if ollie wins 18 games and pitches to a 3.50 era or less ill be satisfied

but anything less than that for 12 mil per year when we could have gotten lowe for a few mil more instead of singing people like redding to 2.5 mil, then it was a collosal mistake

but enough negativitiy from me. i hope ollie succeeds, im still tilting from watching him pitch saturday probably

Well...whatever I guess. I also would have preferred the Mets give Lowe 4/$60 but for some unknown reason they didn't. Could have been the extra $3M a year, could have been the 4th year, could have been the fear of getting burned again signing a pitcher at the tail end of his career, could have been Omar's stupidity. We'll probably never know.

minaya threw a lowball offer to appease the staff. He knew lowe wasnt coming here for 3/36, and knew ollie would so thats where he set the bar

seriously, this is pretty obvious. If Minaya wanted lowe, he would be a met, minaya has never reallly failed in a free agent negotiation where he really wanted a player

Step right up and greet the Mets.
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife,
Guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball,
Knockin' those home runs over the wall.
East side, West side, everybody's coming down,
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets, of New York town.
