Because the world of sports analysis has become extremely unintelligent, for Mets fans and sports fans in general the consensus has been "me pound chest , me angry mets no get yomomoto, me angry yankees get soto, me angry cohen no spend money and me upset me never heard of starting pitchers Mets be bad and go 60-102. " But as someone who understands that starting pitcher depth and bullpen depth are more important than name starting pitchers in their 40's, I was happy with Stearn's moves, I was happy they traded away Scherzer and Verlander for prospects last yr, and in this era of 6 teams per league in the playoffs, there was really no reason to feel the Mets couldn't be competitive, betting markets and BaseballProspectus agreed as usual, the only people who didn't agree were all of the baseball world, because lolmets.
And what I have seen is astonishing to me. Every game where they trail by a run all game, the bullpen and starters pitch excellent and they lose by a run. Every game when they are up by 4 runs, at some point they give up 5. Every game where they trail by 6 runs, they come back to lose by 1 or 2. The amount of tough luck outs and soft hits from opponents both seem out of line as well. I write this after tonight's 8-7 loss to the Giants where the B9 was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen, and anyone who hasn't watched it should. It's the 2024 Mets in a nut shell. I don't believe "clutch" exists in the manner fans think it does. But this season tests my limits. It feels not like just a bad team, but more like one of those bad runs at poker that make you question your sanity or if a 1-2 home game is beatable, lol.
When I watched the Mets stat 11-1 in i think it was 2018, I was not very surprised they fell off because it seemed like they were winning through black magic and felt like a weaker team than most of their opponents. This team feels like the opposite, they feel like equal or better team than most opponents with more solid at bats and just somehow always losing the game, not an amazing team like Atlanta or LA or anything, just a solid one that should win more than not.
I'm writing this to ask the opinions of other non results-oriented people if they see what I see or what. After 50 games, is it possible that this is just somehow an incredibly anti-clutch group of players? Or do they just suck and my analysis is off? I've never been much of an optimist, but I've found myself telling other Mets fans all season, "this team looks good to me, theyll be fine" and getting laughed at. It's made this season one of the most annoying ones in recent memory.
Although "ridiculousness" seems to be unusually high with this franchise. I'm a pretty big Jets fan too, and while that team has had even worse results than the Mets, the only season I can think of that felt like a Mets season was the Brett Favre one, or maybe Rodgers going down on Series 1 like that, but the Mets seem to have something like that 5-6 times a decade whether its losing League championships on bases loaded walks after making a historic comeback in it to almost level it, losing the WS series to your crosstown rival that won like 83 games that year, assembling what on paper looked like an amazing team front-lined by Roberto Alomar, only to be even worse than the previous year, having the greatest catch in the history of your franchise in Game 7 of the LCS... only to lose at home with all the momentum, blowing a 7.5 game lead with 17 team left... and then doing almost the same thing the next year.... pitching Bumgarner to tie only to lose at home anyway by giving up a 3 run shot to a guy no one's ever heard of. Starting 11-1 with a terrible team just to get everyone's hopes up, winning 101 games with a good team (but not that great of a team that was clearly lucky to win 101) only to blow another division and start more lolmets memes. It's just always something.
I guess this has turned into a long rant, but my point/question Is the 2024 Mets season an absurdity? or is this just somehow normal bad season like the say 2021 Mets, and I am misreading?
Have the Mets suffered from an inordinate amount of absurdity in the last 25 years?, Or Can all baseball fans make this complaint?
