Was a bit hesitant about Brodie, but gotta admit, I'm impressed. I mean, he buried the payroll and minor league system for the next half decade with one move.

Lol Wilpons for letting him take on about $75 million on a 36 year old Cano's contract while also trading away the team's top prospects for that right.

And isn't the Cano part of the trade just Jay Bruce??

Diaz was the prize in the trade and that is what the cost was. Trade seems even, losing Kelenich is kind of crappy but getting a potential best reliever in baseball seems like it has some value...no?

Sure it has some value. That value was EITHER taking on some money for Cano OR giving them a prospect or two. Brodie said...how bout both.

Worst thing was he had all the leverage in the world in this deal. Cano was only going to waive his no-trade to go to NY. He was like the only way the Mariners were ridding themselves of that contract.

Diaz is great, but he's the kind of move you make to put you over the top. If the Mets still aren't scoring for deGrom, what's he saving? I would have rather traded Alonso than Kelenic because the former might end up being a DH. That said, I still would not have made the trade.

Dunn + lesser prospect + Bruce/Swarzak if the Mets are taking on most of Cano's $$$
Dunn + better prospect + Bruce/Swarzak if Mariners are kicking in $50m+

Now he wants to trade for Kluber (32 years old), but with a nice contract, though it does seem 2017 was a career year and then sell Syndergaard (26 with several years of control). Maybe he can pry Miggy Cabrera from the Tigers.

I've never been on the Wilpons need to recklessly spend more bandwagon (and you can search my post history in this thread to confirm that). And after this, I actually believe them when they say that Sandy was the conservative one. I've agreed with his tendencies to be patient and avoid Panic City more often than not. They did allow him to sign Wright/Cespedes.

Kelenic is now guaranteed to shoot through three levels this year and turn into Mike Trout in 2020 after this trade. Top 50 prospect this year at 20 years old. That's a big deal. Dunn has the upside of a nice middle of the rotation starter.

Put it this way: They gave up two 50 FV prospects (and Kelenic may be even better as he ages) for a closer, which is less than the Yankees gave up for an All Star pitcher (Paxton)

So what mets top prospects have the mets traded in the past 30 years that makes you sure this means kellnick wil turn into mike trout?

Puslipher?
Wilson?
Preston Wilson?
Ochoa?

Please

Kelenic is going to turn into Mike Trout? Lol

I don’t really think the trade is that good....but that’s absurd.

Honestly, I can't get all up in arms about a 19 year old prospect. I remember Mets fans being livid over giving up Mulvey and Humber in the Johan Santana trade. I don't think Mulvey ever reached the majors and Humber had a career ERA over 5.

So if the Mets have traded a top prospect since 1988, he will turn into Trout? If not, he won't?

But okay...Carlos Gomez, Scott Kazmir, Jeff Kent were all pretty good for a while. They've also DFA'd Justin Turner and refused to sign Murphy when he was begging to come back to them. Still don't know why what past GMs have done will have a result on Kelenic's future. (If I'm allowed to go back closer to 50 years, there was this guy named Nolan Ryan too.)

But this is the Mets' way. He's destined to become a star once they've parted with him. Nobody's Trout, but Nimmo/Conforto is actually a pretty good comp for him (3-5 fWAR). Then again, I feel like I was one of the few here high on Nimmo a few years ago too. And that's when I thought he was just going to be a high OBP guy without much power.

If you want a history of how Met trades for aging second basemen have worked out...Baerga, Alomar.

The point is, Brodie had all the leverage in the world in this trade. Nobody was going to take on Cano's contract and he wouldn't have waived his no-trade to go many other places. They weren't looking to trade Diaz. He just gave them everything they could have wanted. Have some conversations with free agent middle IFs (Asdrubal?) or the multitude of closers on the market this winter and make the Mariners sweat. If the Mets don't make this trade, it's no big deal. The Mariners needed to unload Cano more than the Mets needed either of them right now.

I don't remember this. Injuries, aging curves and economics weren't as well covered or researched publicly 10 years ago, but the only guy people didn't really want to give up was Gomez and I still don't think many people crapped on this trade. Santana was maybe the best pitcher in baseball at the time in his prime.

One evaluator cites Darin Erstad and Grady Sizemore as comps for Jarred Kelenic, who is headed from the #Mets to the #Mariners in the Canó-Diaz blockbuster. Kelenic, 18, was the sixth overall pick out of Waukesha (WI) West H.S. in the 2018 draft.
Erstad was worth an average of 3 fWAR over a nine year period, though that was skewed by one season above 8 fWAR.
Sizemore had four straight seasons above 5.5 fWAR before injury. Seemed like two very different career paths, but let's hope it's more Erstad than Sizemore. Still would be a pretty solid get for Seattle.

The kazmir trade was dumb

Kent wasn't a prospect, he was a good player even when he was traded

Carlos Gomez has a career OPS+ of 95. He's a below average player for his career whi had 2 or 3 pretty good seasons

Gomez humber mulvey and guerrera for Santana IS STILL a good trade, even with the Santana injury

Humber and pelfrey were caught miss prospects lol

Justin Turner was not a prospect. Blaming them for dfaing him is the most unfair monday morning qbing ever

Again, who is arguing that point?

Gomez was an average bat with a great glove in CF, who complied 25 career fWAR. For reference, that would rank eighth all time for the Mets in between Keith and HoJo. Beltran and Strawberry are the only two Mets OFers above that. He had some speed and power. Pretty decent career. Would still do that trade again in a minute.

Humber...pitchers bust much more often than hitters. If you have three, you assume one is a total bust, one ends up injured and hopefully one makes it.

Turner...I thought we were just looking for guys previous GMs whiffed on for some reason. He would certainly be one and credits his transformation as having begun with the Mets (specifically Marlon Byrd). Maybe somebody shoulda been paying attention?

Even if none of those transactions under previous regimes ever happened, I still don't like giving up your best prospect in a weak system AND taking on so much of Cano's contract. Also realize that prospect analysis has improved by leaps and bounds over the last decade or so. Teams don't miss as often as they have in the past.

#Mets have indeed talked to #Marlins about Realmuto and are seriously considering Nimmo as a centerpiece. Nothing is considered imminent as Miami has suitors for Realmuto.
Centerpiece meaning Nimmo AND more players. Probably the rest of their remaining prospects. Think Brodie just wants to make big splashes to hear his name in the news. Trade everyone.

Realmuto's really good. He and Nimmo had extremely similar numbers in the same amount of playing time last year (4.5-4.8 fWAR). Realmuto's slightly older and about to get more expensive a lot quicker. He may have a bit more value than Nimmo as a catcher. Stuff that's hard to quantify, but it's not much more than a lateral move when factoring future costs. Why do it when it's a guy the fans love, who's become pretty awesome? And also, considering adding another pretty major piece? Brodie would be setting a precedent as a guy who really likes to overpay.

And while the Kazmir trade was awful from a Mets perspective, he still didn't turn out to be the phenom that was projected.

We know how this story goes...

Realmuto bats .210 before blowing out his knee before Memorial Day, is never the same again.

Thor is in the Bronx in the Cy Young discussion for years.

No thanks.

Jeff Wilpon admits that part of the reason they traded for Diaz was to block the Phillies.

Ironic that it leaks this afternoon that the Phillies are in on Realmuto. Hope Brodie's not this dumb, but he does have Ruben Amaro advising him.
