Carton has always been a huge Melo fan, and I suspect that's coloring his attitude a bit. But I also think that these guys genuinely don't understand the financial ramifications, good and bad, of the decision.
Regarding Lin's basketball abilities, I find the divergence of opinion pretty interesting. Larry Brown reportedly thinks Lin will just be a backup. Hubie Brown and Magic both gushed about Lin last year, declaring he was the real deal. I'm not really swayed by such opinions, personally. I doubt any of those guys watched Lin as closely as Knick fans did, i.e., every minute that he played.
To illustrate, in the last couple of weeks that he played, I paid pretty close attention to Lin's so-called deficiencies, such as driving to his left, turning the ball over, foul shooting and defense. I distinctly recall that I thought he was making incremental progress in each area. It was small progress, but enough to give me confidence that he would continue to improve. Yet, I hardly ever heard sports commentators make that observation.
I don't know whether I'll watch the Knicks this year, but I know I'll go out of my way to try to watch Lin.
