McKinnie needs to just stay the hell out of Miami.

i strongly disagree that garnett was as good as kobe over this period, though i am not a real basketball fan and don't really know.
but anyway, even if he was as good as kobe, it would not be for "take over a game" , "impact player" reasons that were mentioned. it'd be for things that are more consistent like elite help defense and being solid if unspectacular in all areas. kobe's "impact" skills are off the charts.

played my first game of Madden 10, can already tell it's the least realistic Madden game to date as Tyrell Johnson had 2 pick 6's and was player of the game.

QB's job to count how many people are in the huddle before he joins the huddle.

You'll notice most QB's stand outside the huddle for a moment or 2 before they join it, that's to assure there are not 11 people in the huddle, and joining it would be the 12th.

Face it Minnesota, you got Favred.

Interesting writeup on the Vikings run game by PFF's head guy (I think):

With 90% of teams and plays this is actually fairly obvious [to figure out what they are trying to do] and with a further 5% plus you can work it out with a bit of effort but with Minnesota [on runs] it's more often than not completely opaque.

With Minnesota it really feels like each running play is an unplanned mess, a completely chaotic scrum of humanity where each player has no clue what the others are doing. Now I'm sure this isn't the case but it's too prevalent now to be just an odd bad series or game. It is quite simply the most poorly constructed and executed running game in the NFL and I actually feel sorry for Peterson having to run in it. I have very little doubt Peterson would make more yards behind say Washington's group than his own. In fact I'd go further, I think if you put Peterson behind the Cowboys OL he'd break every record ever set for rushing. Just my view of course.

Another post from one of the PFF guys in that thread:

Quote:
It's not often you can tell at a glance when something like the O-line is playing badly in the run game. It usually takes specific instances of a player missing an assignment for a defender to knife in unblocked for you to really spot it.

Minnesota's run-blocking is such a disaster that you can see it just from watching Peterson run. It's like they've decided not to bother with an actual plan on each play, rather line up with 5 guys, a TE, a FB and Peterson and said "right, on 2 just find someone to block and let's see what happens!". So sure enough Peterson gets the ball, and just runs into a messy wall of bodies, and he's left to try and find a crease to fight for some yardage.

I agree that Peterson seeing even standard holes would be threatening major yardage marks for the season.

There was a lot made early on about Childress employing something of a 'zone blocking scheme' and how unsuitable all of his players were to running such a scheme on the Line. It might have gotten even worse now with 2 bookend OTs at 6'8 and 335lbs+.

They really do need to do something about it though because Peterson should be the backbone of that offense, and should be able to dominate teams. At the moment they're wasting him by not bothering to even try and open up specific holes for him.

SL - I agree with everything you quoted. Good article - thanks.

This stuff should be obvious to anyone who watches the team regularly, but we do not hear it from the local or national media. I wonder why?

+1

quite a few of us on 2p2 have been bitching about the whole run blocking thing for the past couple years (maybe even earlier i don't remember) nice to see people outside MN noticing

probably because the majority of the media consists of barely functioning ******s? they give RBs all the credit when things are going well and for the most part all the blame when things aren't. idk i guess they fail to realize how important an OL/proper run blocking scheme is. **** Chilly

There was an article on ESPN a few days ago that claimed the Vikings had one of the 4 best OLs in the NFL... (the other 3 being the Colts, Saints and Jets, of course)

Also, PFF wasn't putting all the blaim on the coaching staff, notice the word "execution." They think Hutch specifically had a horrendous year, Herrera had a bad year, Loadholt and Sullivan aren't great run blockers and McKinnie also had a pretty mediocre year. The only person on the team with positive marks in run blocking is exactly who you'd expect, Kleinsasser, the tackle playing TE.

Stuff like that ESPN article confirms that the national media are pretty much clueless.

If Hutch had a horrendous year, I think it could have been bad by his standards, but he is clearly the best OL on this team & it is not even close. I think Sullivan pretty much sucks, Loadholt might be ok someday, but is not very good right now, Herrera is not good, and McKinnie gets by on talent if he decides he wants to play, which isnt often enough imo.

The fact that overall, we have below average players on the OL, just makes the scheme work that much worse. I dont remember much turnover on the OL between Tice's last season & Chilly's 1st, but I do remember seeing significantly worse OL play overall when Chilly took over.

It does seem like just a mass of bodies, even on Peterson's long(ish) td run vs the Saints, it was a big glob to the right and Kleinsasser made a good block and Peterson made a good cut.

But it did seem like Taylor and Harvin had holes to run through, so I'm kinda conflicted. Could be small sample size or just the way the defense reacts to Peterson.

all of peterson's long runs from my memory this year were him running into the backs of his OL, the defense converging on the ball, adp breaking a tackle then making a sick cut into open space and outrunning contain man. compare to chris johnson who would just glide through giant holes untouched and just try to juke the secondary. mbn

Mike Tice as OL coach would have been such an epic offseason signing for us IMO. Instead he is going to the ****ing Bears.

Hmm, that guy does look pretty good...

I have to say, I actually think the Moss trade was worse than the Herschel Walker trade. Trade the best receiver for Napoleon Harris and Troy 'Hands' Williamson? Did they think it was a coincidence that George, Cunningham, and Culpepper all had top years in a row? T-Jack would be an all-pro. It still pisses me off to this day, ****ing ****.

Oh and Joe buck can go eat a dick, **** you, you disgusting piece of ****...

It wasn't because of Moss.. It was just Red McCombs trying to screw the organization over again on his way out the door..

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf still is upset with former owner Red McCombs for trading Randy Moss to the Raiders. Wilf said he would have never approved the trade of Moss, who was a big attraction at the gate as well being an outstanding player. The trade was made March 2, 2005, and the Wilfs purchased the team on May 25.

And then Red had the stones to say on his way out that if we won the Super Bowl the year after he left he deserved the credit.. FFS I hate that man

I've always liked Erin Henderson and even wrote an extended post about how awesome great it was that the Vikings signed him as an undrafted FA.

Pretty lol:

Of course he followed that one up with some standard cliche like "my favorite part is the crowd noise" or something like that.
