Rumor is Jay Gruden is a possible HC candidate. I hope not.

The Wilfs suck **** at hiring former coordinators to be HC. I hope it doesn't happen again.

Gus Johnson: He comes off as a phony to me with his "enthusiasm". He makes a lot of simple mistakes and does not seem knowledgeable about sports to me. In that respect, he reminds me of Dave Benz, who is terrible at doing the Wolves games.

My wish list for HC:

-David Shaw. Kept Stanford a top 10 team even with Harbaugh and Luck leaving. Played under Bill Walsh and Denny Green, coached under Jim Harbaugh. Big proponent of pounding the football and tough defense. 34-6 record at Stanford.

-Lovie Smith. Player's coach and master of defense. Took Bears to Super Bowl with a poor QB.

-Rob Chudzinski. Somehow got the Browns to 3-2 before losing Hoyer to season ending knee injury and Richardson to trade. Great offensive mind. Turned poor offenses in the past into top 10 the next year(Carolina).

-Sean McDormatt. DC of Carolina. Young and smart. Defense only gave up more than 20 points once this year. Great energy and passion.

-Mike Zimmer DC of Cincinnati. Has led Cincy to top 10 defense last 4 years. Players love and respect him.

Not sure you can call shipping out Trent "One Yard And A Cloud Of Dust" Richardson as "losing" anything.

For those that follow college football more closely isn't Shaw known to be super conservative? Obviously there is a lot more to being a good coach than that, but I thought he had that reputation.

Anytime I think of a black HC I think they'll be super conservative. Is that racist? I actually thought Frazier was pretty good though.

I'll support whoever they hire regardless as long it's not like Romeo Crennel or something.

At the time it was a big moral hit and no one thought Browns would win a game. Puts in Hoyer and they win 3 in a row including CIN. I like his creativity with offenses.

@4thandLongwell

So sorry to see Leslie Frazier go. Great coach, even better man of integrity. Too bad they fired the wrong guy up there.

Lol at firing the wrong guy. No one else to blame but Frazier for sticking with Ponder for too long and costing himself a job. He named Ponder the starter before training camp I believe.

Same here.

There were 2 other GM's that whiffed on QB's before Ponder was picked in 2011 also. We could easily have Locker or Gabbert right now and be in the same situation.

Historically, QB has way more misses than hits early on, but you can't be conservative and take the BPA forever in the 1st. At some point you gotta gamble and try to land a franchise QB.

I am kinda nervous that Spielman might be going into this draft w/ the exact mindset that lead us to taking Ponder though. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

Really hope we can avoid 1st round QB if we aren't happy w/ what's available. Boyd, Hundley in round 2 or waiting for Jameis / Mariota would be way better than settling for 4th best QB at #8.

As far as Speilman, his personnel choices(signing Carlson to long term deal, going with only 5 CB's to start this season, keeping Johnson over Schwartz at guard spot) have not been his strong point. He nails the draft.

What do advanced stats say about Greenway?

Big difference between this draft and that one is Boyd/Hundley are better prospects than Ponder.

Like NLSoldier keeps saying we'll have to see how the prospects shake out. One day McShay says Bortles could go #1 to the Texans and then I read a different mock and Bortles is available when the Vikings pick.

PFF hated him, rated him like the 2nd worst 4-3 OLB in the league and the worst player, by far, on the Vikings defense.

Among 4-3 OLBs they had him ranked:

17th out of 17 in pass rush productivity with only 12 total pressures on 93 rushes.
13 of 22 in run stop percentage with 26 stops on 403 run snaps.
17 of 18 in tackling efficiency (tackles per missed tackle)
14 of 16 in pass coverage effectiveness (yards allowed per snap in coverage)

The reason the total number of players changes for those has to do with the way they're filtering by snapcounts (I had it set to 50% of team snaps for all of those stats).

Oh yeah, and because he played a ton, he has the dubious honor of leading all OLBs in missed tackles and passing yards allowed (809). For the passing yards I don't know their methodology on zone defenses.

Pretty much a lock Greenway will have to take a pay cut or he will be cut. Would count 3.8 mill in dead cap space but save 4.4 in cap room.

Great article by Tom Pelissero on the Freeman disaster:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...-play/4269041/

"Four people with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports that Freeman was late for numerous meetings in his roughly three months with the Vikings. A third player said Freeman often was among the last players to the facility."
