I feel pretty confident saying we won't sign BOTH Percy and Jennings. We just don't have the money to sign 2 big WR's and keep the rest of the core pieces.

Even if we were to somehow miraculously sign Percy to a big extension, if his personality/drama really is that big of a distraction, is it worth it? Will we regret it 2 years from now?

So would you rather have:

disgruntled Harvin

OR

Jennings + a 1st & 3rd*

*(or two 2nds, whatever. If the offers are substantially less than that, then it becomes closer)

Percy is signed through 2013.

We are very unlikely to sign Jennings. Nobody wants to go from playing w/ Rodgers to playing w/ Ponder.

Allen is due 14m / FA yr after
Williams 8m / 8m / FA
Winfield 7m / FA

Will be interesting to see if we move on from any of the above. Besides WR and G (possibly RT -- if we dont resign Loadholt) I'd expect us to focus heavily on getting younger on defense this offseason.

I heard a couple talking heads discussing Winfield on the radio the other day (I forgot who it was). They seemed to think Winfield taking/accepting a pay cut is a given.

Pretty sure there was a built in de-escalator in his contract if he became the nickel corner, or less than some predetermined # of snaps. Robinson/Jefferson not quite ready to play outside full time tho IMO.

If we could extend him for a few more years and have him play mostly nickel he could lengthen his career a bit longer IMO. He's so small out there, that he's constantly dealing with injuries.

I'd rather have him 100% healthy for 60% of the snaps, rather than 80% healthy for 100% of the snaps.

Wasnt the de-escalator if he got moved to safety though? I thought that's what it was.

He might not be competing for best DT year in and year and his role may have changed a little, but he's still very, very good. For example:

We’d understand those promoting Henry Melton, one of the most disruptive players inside in the league. Same goes for Kevin Williams, with both ranking among our Top 10 defensive tackles this year.
Based on that article the Vikings are probably the North's top team... when you ignore QB.

Quote:
Running Back: Adrian Peterson (MIN)

Was there ever any doubt that our co-MVP would be the starter here? Every team he’s been eligible for so far he’s made, thanks to a stunning year where he carried his Vikings into the postseason.
Quote:
Fullback: Jerome Felton (MIN)

The biggest competition Felton faced in this division was from his own teammate Rhett Ellison, who actually finished the year with a better run-blocking grade. Ellison only missed out because of a lack of playing time.
Quote:
Tight End: Kyle Rudolph (MIN)

Found the end zone nine times even with some erratic quarterback play. He’s not a world beater yet, but he is extremely competent in everything that is asked of him.
Quote:
Wide Receivers: Calvin Johnson (DET) and Brandon Marshall (CHI)

If Percy Harvin had played more than 427 snaps then we’d have found some room for him somehow. He didn’t though, and as a result this duo picked themselves. Johnson broke the receiving record, while Marshall showed how dangerous he is after the catch, in the end zone and just generally whenever the ball was thrown his way.
Quote:
Tackles: Matt Kalil (MIN) and Phil Loadholt (MIN)

Kalil was a no brainer. He came into the league as a guy who was expected to shutdown pass rushers and in Year 1 he’s largely done that. The second spot was between Loadholt and Gosder Cherlius. Ultimately, we wanted a tackle that gets some significant push in the run game. There are few better than Loadholt in that regard.
Quote:
Center: John Sullivan (MIN)

You may be surprised to know this, but there isn’t a better center in football than John Sullivan right now. He finished the year with our best grade and is coming off his second consecutive excellent campaign.
Quote:
Defensive Tackle: Ndamukong Suh (DET) and Nick Fairly (DET)

We’d understand those promoting Henry Melton, one of the most disruptive players inside in the league. Same goes for Kevin Williams, with both ranking among our Top 10 defensive tackles this year. Ultimately though, Ndamukong Suh was a bully in a good way. He worked over right guards throughout the league to end up behind only Geno Atkins in our pass rusher rankings for defensive tackles. Fairly missed some time, and was a penalty machine at times, but his all-around impact couldn’t be ignored.
Quote:
Linebackers: Lance Briggs (CHI), Brad Jones (GB) and Erin Henderson (MIN)

Briggs had himself a fine year, ending up third overall in our outside linebacker rankings with some top notch work in coverage. In the middle, Jones is the best we can manage, as he is coming off a surprisingly impressive year after moving to an inside linebacker spot. Our last choice came down to Henderson and his teammate Chad Greenway. While we’re not overly comfortable with Henderson in coverage, his work in the run game and tackling (he missed three tackles compared to 15 of Greenway) earned the selection.
Quote:
Cornerbacks: Charles Tillman (CHI) and Antoine Winfield (MIN)

Two of our Top 5 cornerbacks in 2012, with Casey Hayward, Tim Jennings and others unlucky to miss out. It may seem odd having Winfield in this team given that Hayward was a First Team All-Pro over him. While Hayward is the top dog in the slot, Winfield plays every down and makes an impact on all of them. No such controversy with Tillman who added some underrated work in coverage to his plethora of forced fumbles.
Quote:
Safeties: Morgan Burnett (GB) and Harrison Smith (MIN)

Burnett took advantage of Charles Woodson going down to get closer to the line of scrimmage and show off a knack for making plays. Over in Minnesota, Smith was a huge part of that revamped defense, showing some tremendous instincts in coverage even if his tackling was a little suspect at times.
Quote:
Special Teams

Kicker: Blair Walsh (MIN)

When you go 10 for 10 on field goals of 50 yards or more you’re doing something right.

Punter: Tim Masthay (GB)

A solid enough year from Masthay which took advantage of a slow start from Chris Kluwe.

Returner: Marcus Sherels (MIN)

Picked up good yardage on his kick returns and was a danger when fielding punts.
Oh, and from their MVP article:

Quote:
Every single Peterson number this season is crazy. He averaged as much yardage after contact (4.1) as Arian Foster did overall, forced a massive 69 missed tackles to lead the league, and topped 150 yards in seven of his last 10 games. Only an efficient final game raised Christian Ponder’s passing average per attempt to 6.1 yards, 0.1 above Peterson’s ludicrous 6.0 rushing average.

They loved Henderson last year too.

Edge Defenders: Clay Matthews (GB) and Israel Idonije (CHI)

Matthews seems to be one of those guys who people love to say is overrated, when he’s far from it. A constant threat to make a play regardless of whether it’s a passing or running attempt, there are few like him in the league. Showing what we think of the Pro Bowl, we’re bypassing both Jared Allen and Julius Peppers here. Instead, we are opting for the excellent Idonije who delivered the goods even when the Bears had to move him to defensive tackle.

Spielman Q&A:
Quote:
Originally Posted by Spielman on Percy

"I'm not going to say anything that hasn't been said. It's something that we felt was best for Percy. We didn't want to ruin any long-term or longevity issues and put him out there if he wasn't going to be able to play and risk further injury."

Was he suspended for conduct detrimental to the team?

"No."

Did he fight the decision to put him on IR?

"Again, when we talk about that, Percy was, as any player, is so competitive that they want to play. Mentally, you may want to play, but physically, you may not be able to play. And then sometimes, when you make those decisions, you've got to make it in which you think is in the best interest of the football player for the long term, because ... he's right in the prime of his career. He's 24, 25 years old."

Who made the final decision?

"I think that's a decision how we work internally, just talking with Leslie and myself. Again, we're going to go off the medical. I think our medical staff is the best in the business in the NFL and (head athletic trainer) Eric Sugarman and our doctors, and we're going to listen to what they have to say and make the decisions from there."

Do you have any concerns about Harvin character-wise, attitude-wise, anything else?

"No. Percy comes to work every day. Everybody sees what Percy puts on the field. He plays the game as hard or harder than anyone else in the NFL, the effort that he puts up out there. So, we have no issues with Percy Harvin."

Would it be tough at all for Peterson and Harvin to coexist and get both enough touches to keep them happy?

"Yeah, I don't know if I wouldn't want both of those guys. They're both tremendously, very talented football players. Yeah, there's guys that are blue chip receivers and blue chip running backs that do coexist in this league. My job is to try to find those guys and get as many of those type players on the field for us as possible."

With the way Percy is built and the way he plays, can he stay healthy enough to have a long career in the NFL?

"Yeah, and Percy lays his body on the line, just like Adrian lays his body on the line. Sure, Percy's smaller, but Percy is pretty well strapped together now. He's not a skinny receiver. He's built like a smaller running back. He's not built like a typical, leaner receiver. We believe he does have the durability to do what he needs to do and to play 60 games in the NFL."

Has he been back through for his exit physical?

"I won't talk about when they're (coming). I know Leslie addressed who will be through."

Have you initiated talks for an extension?

"We're going to go through our process first before we make any decisions on any of our players, our UFAs, any extensions. All that stuff will be done over the next month here as we lay the game plan going forward."

Spielman is an expert at saying lots of words than dont mean much.

The elephant in the room question that apparently wasnt asked is what happened between Harvin & Frazier that caused Harvin to yell at him during the game, and what has been done to address this? Not that it matters though, because Spielman would have either refused to answer or made up some BS.

Where were these "lucky" wins? Rolling SF at home? Or going to Houston in a must win game and beating them up? What about beating GB in the biggest game of the season? I think you may need to look up the definition of luck. The only game where you can say we got lucky would maybe be the JAX game early in the season.

i don't mean lucky wrt to specific events within a game i just mean lucky as in if you ran out 1000 simulations of this season we finished near the tippy top of our possible range of outcomes.

ya its obv no fun to call it luck when we come out and dominate a team that is better than us, but any time you beat a team that was substantially favored against you and would be substantially favored against you again in a rematch the next week (i.e. SF, GB, HOU) it should pretty much go under the "lucky" (as in not able to be easily replicated) win column.
