Kepler is probably an average RF, but the competition isn't exactly stiff.

6-4 might be enough to get there, given the fail level of everyone in the race. If they need 7 I really hate their chances.

5-5 or even worse will likely be enough

Looks like Santana can pitch this Thurs and then again in the play-in on Tuesday without any adjustment to his schedule.

Do you pitch Gibson (Fri) and Berrios (Sat) in their regular slots, which would line them up to pitch games 1 and 2 of the ALDS in either order the following Thurs and Fri? Or do you skip one or both of their slots so they are available in relief for the Tuesday play in?

I think it's a legit question given that those 3 are clearly the 3 best pitchers on the team right now and we really don't have any good relief pitchers

Here's my post season roster:

C Castro
1B Mauer
2B Dozier
SS Polanco
3B Escobar
OF Rosario
OF Buxton
OF Kepler
OF/DH Grossman

UT Adrianza
1B Vargas
DH/PH Sano
C Gimenez
OF/C Garver

SP Santana
SP Berrios
SP Gibson
P Mejia (Lefty)

RP Hildenberger
RP Busenitz
RP Rogers (Lefty)
RP Belisle
RP Duffey
P Gee

25th spot I'm debating between:

PR/OF Granite
RP Moya (Lefty) - not sure if eligible

Would definitely consider using Mejia in relief if I needed a lefty. Presumably somebody could pitch on 3 days rest and if not, Gee could spot start. I'm definitely cutting Colon and one of the regular right handed RPs (Pressly for me but not that important)

It's very possible Sano won't be ready anyway, in which case you can have both Granite and Moya.

I feel like if he can walk he should be on the roster (especially since his likely replacement, granite, should never see the field beyond pinch running) - but I'm not a doctor. Is this an injury that can present long term issues if he aggravates it?

Playoffs?!?

I think if we can get through NY, we have a legit shot at making a run at it. Are we pitching Santana for the WC game?

This team has really surprised me, especially after some putrid early-season performances, especially that 14 run turnaround game vs HOU. They remind me a little of the 1987 team. They have a lot of heart.

I think so, yeah. They pulled him after 57 pitches last night.

They'll probably throw Berrios for like 3 innings tomorrow and have him available out of the bullpen tues?

I doubt he pitches at all in the WC game; we need a starter for 1 and 5 for divisional series. Santana couldn't pitch until game 4.

Presumably Santana would pitch game 3 on Sunday, which would be a normal 4 days rest.

Gibson would pitch one of the first 2 games.
Berrios would likely pitch the other. But if he pitches, say, two innings on Tuesday he should still be able to start game 2 on Friday, right?

You have to make it to the divisional series before you worry about it IMO. I'm not saying you definitely pitch Berrios in the WC game, but I would have him available and would put him in if a high leverage spot was right for him. All hands on deck.

I agree that they can't even really be thinking about the ALDS in the WC game unless it gets really out of hand early (which seems highly unlikely).

Twins will have to be one of the longest shots ever with the AL as stacked as it is, but it's the MLB playoffs. Anything can happen and the team has been playing legitimately well down the stretch. I'm curious to see if Sano gets back out there before the end of the season and positions himself to make a possible playoff impact.

Berrios pitched out of the bullpen today, which seems to indicate he will be available for the WC game.

Sano also played (PH ground out to the pitcher) and is supposedly going to DH tomorrow!

How sweet will it be to knock the Yankees out the playoffs in New York? We owe them one for sure. Let's get it.

Apparently Sano is not on the WC roster. I'm satisfied that they gave it their best effort to have him ready and he just wasn't effective enough (can't run).

I still think it might be worth having him available as a PH only and plan to immediately PR when he gets on, but it might be that he had a set back on Sunday and just isn't ready for that, even. Regardless, I'm happy with how the Twins handled it.
Minnesota Twins Quote

It's a little concerning they don't even want him as a PH tonight since it isn't like they THAT many pitchers for a 1-game series.
Minnesota Twins Quote
10-03-2017 , 01:29 PM
Agree.

On the other hand if he's far below 100% and his effectiveness is severely limited, who in the starting lineup might he PH for?

Dozier? No
Mauer? No
Polanco? No
Rosario? No
Escobar? Probably not
Max Kepler? Maybe against a LHP
Buxton? No
Grossman? No
Castro? Yes

So there are probably only 2 guys you're going to consider PHing him for, and then probably only against lefties. Vargas and Garver are potentially better PHing options anyway if he's as ineffective as it seems.

He is a significantly better hitter vs. LHP than everyone but Dozier:

He's also really good at hitting fastballs:

The Yankees closer is a LHP who throws a lot of fastballs:

So it really comes down to how you estimate the impact of his injury and time off on his ability to hit Chapman's fastball. Unless the impact is large (which is very, very possible), I'd love to have him available.
Minnesota Twins Quote

if the impact was not large, he'd be playing, clearly. my assumption was that his effective hitting ability is something like .220/.330/.410 right now. Is that worthless? No, but it's not worth very much in the AL. I'm pretty sure if they thought he was better than that right now he'd be playing today.

Your point about chapman is fair, but I feel like having hardly played in the last 40 days is going to put you at a bigger disadvantage against a guy who throws 103 mph than your average pitcher

When I said "it is concerning," I meant "I'm concerned about what it implies about his health if they don't think he'd be useful," not "I'm concerned about their decision-making process."

I love this team. What a great string of ABs to start the game. Not intimidated whatsoever.

I think it would take a 40 run lead before I felt safe against the Yankees at this point, though.
