Because unless we can work a S&T for Martin,
we have to renounce AKs rights to create the cap space to sign Martin.

if we end up renouncing AK's rights
does that mean we cant sign him later?
by cha on Jul 3, 2013 | 1:42 PM up reply flag
Only with an exception.
And the only one we’d have is the mid-room which would be a max of 2/5.4
Unless we figure out a way to create more cap room.

Why is it set up this way?
So AK is a free agent, free to sign with any team he wants. He is no longer a member of the team, and can do what he wishes. But his $10mil still counts towards us?
So if we just flat out re-sign him to a 3yr./$21mil. contract, he counts as $17mil. towards the cap in 13/14?
Is it just to stop insider dealings? It really doesn’t make sense to me.

From Salary Cap FAQ...
39. When do free agents stop counting against team salary?
Free agents continue to be included in team salary until one of the following three things happens:
1. The player signs a new contract with the same team. When this happens, the team salary reflects the player’s new salary rather than his cap hold.
2. The player signs with a different team. As soon as this happens, the player becomes his new team’s problem, and his salary no longer counts against his old team.
3. The team renounces the player.
Why does option one not work?

It does work.
If he signed right now for 7M, he’d count 7M against our cap.
Which would still leave us over the cap and unable to sign Martin outright.

Ok...
So as we stand right now, are cap hit is $55,891,020.00 with AK’s $10mil still on our books?
So how does it work signing anyone over $2,608,980.00 if that puts us over the cap.
Just trying to figure this out.
Thanks

Actually we're over 60 with AK's cap hold.

Renounce AK, sign KMart, sign Bud
in that order

Hakeem Olajuwon
Ok, renouncing AK...
Takes us down to around $50mil., signing Kevin takes us right up to the cap, and you can go over the cap with guys that were on the team last year.
Is that right?

By renouncing AK, his cap hold goes away. But we lose his "non-Bird" rights as well.
Currently without AK (and Stiemer released):
14,693,906 – Kevin Love
8,816,000 – Nikola Pekovic (Cap Hold)
5,016,960 – Derrick Williams
4,687,000 – JJ Barea
4,320,000 – Luke Ridnour
3,678,358 – Ricky Rubio
3,066,667 – Alexey Shved
2,180,000 – Dante Cunningham
1,681,728 – Chase (Cap Hold)
1,572,600 – Shabazz Muhammad
1,127,200 – Gorgui Dieng
916,099 – Chris Johnson
$51,762,008
Cap = $58,500,000
Cap Space = $6,737,992
Now, as long as we keep AK’s rights, you have to add another $11,735,219 to that total putting us at 63M and change.
At that point we can only resign Pek, Bud and AK because we have their Bird (or non-Bird) rights and can exceed the cap.
If we renounce AK, we’re back to having 6.7M in capspace. That’s enough to sign Martin, and then (even though we’re back at the cap) we can resign Pek and Bud using Bird Rights to exceed the cap.
