Well Maynor left for the WIZ, don't think that had any effect, but for POR to offer a "massive" contract to PEK they're going to have to shed something. I hope it's Freeland. TRob has hindered them.

yeah, he'd be a nice consolation prize if we have to lose AK.

I think we're going to match whatever POR offers, but I hope you guys dont shed that salary and put the hurt on us the way we did it to you last season with Batum.

Seems like a bad prediction, especially considering injury possibilities. The 55 wins prediction, at this point, seems like a bold prediction as well.

Because unless we can work a S&T for Martin,

we have to renounce AKs rights to create the cap space to sign Martin.

if we end up renouncing AK's rights

does that mean we cant sign him later?
by cha on Jul 3, 2013 | 1:42 PM up reply flag
Only with an exception.

And the only one we’d have is the mid-room which would be a max of 2/5.4

Unless we figure out a way to create more cap room.

Why is it set up this way?

So AK is a free agent, free to sign with any team he wants. He is no longer a member of the team, and can do what he wishes. But his $10mil still counts towards us?

So if we just flat out re-sign him to a 3yr./$21mil. contract, he counts as $17mil. towards the cap in 13/14?

Is it just to stop insider dealings? It really doesn’t make sense to me.

From Salary Cap FAQ...

39. When do free agents stop counting against team salary?

Free agents continue to be included in team salary until one of the following three things happens:

1. The player signs a new contract with the same team. When this happens, the team salary reflects the player’s new salary rather than his cap hold.

2. The player signs with a different team. As soon as this happens, the player becomes his new team’s problem, and his salary no longer counts against his old team.

3. The team renounces the player.

Why does option one not work?

by Hakeem Olajuwon on Jul 3, 2013 | 4:41 PM up reply rec flag
It does work.

If he signed right now for 7M, he’d count 7M against our cap.

Which would still leave us over the cap and unable to sign Martin outright.

Hakeem Olajuwon
Ok...

So as we stand right now, are cap hit is $55,891,020.00 with AK’s $10mil still on our books?

So how does it work signing anyone over $2,608,980.00 if that puts us over the cap.

Just trying to figure this out.

Thanks

Renounce AK, sign KMart, sign Bud

in that order

Ok, renouncing AK...

Takes us down to around $50mil., signing Kevin takes us right up to the cap, and you can go over the cap with guys that were on the team last year.

Is that right?

By renouncing AK, his cap hold goes away. But we lose his "non-Bird" rights as well.

Currently without AK (and Stiemer released):

14,693,906 – Kevin Love
8,816,000 – Nikola Pekovic (Cap Hold)
5,016,960 – Derrick Williams
4,687,000 – JJ Barea
4,320,000 – Luke Ridnour
3,678,358 – Ricky Rubio
3,066,667 – Alexey Shved
2,180,000 – Dante Cunningham
1,681,728 – Chase (Cap Hold)
1,572,600 – Shabazz Muhammad
1,127,200 – Gorgui Dieng
916,099 – Chris Johnson

$51,762,008

Cap = $58,500,000

Cap Space = $6,737,992

Now, as long as we keep AK’s rights, you have to add another $11,735,219 to that total putting us at 63M and change.

At that point we can only resign Pek, Bud and AK because we have their Bird (or non-Bird) rights and can exceed the cap.

If we renounce AK, we’re back to having 6.7M in capspace. That’s enough to sign Martin, and then (even though we’re back at the cap) we can resign Pek and Bud using Bird Rights to exceed the cap.

5. What would you offer Nikola Pekovic?

****: Five years, $57.5 million. Pek’s situation has all the earmarks of a nice payday. He finished the season well, he’s a big man and he’s a restricted free agent. If some team wants to pry him away from Minnesota, they’re going to have to make him an offer the Timberwollves would be reluctant to match. But I don’t see Minnesota letting him go that easily. After he flirts with other teams a little, I see them taking advantage of their Bird rights and locking him in for five years with bigger raises, but maybe conceding a little on the starting salary.

Elhassan: Four years, $44 million (five years, $55 million if it’s from Minnesota). One of the most efficient interior scorers in the league, Pekovic gets to the free throw line frequently (0.437 FTA rate) and converts (0.744 FT percentage), and is also one of the best offensive rebounders in the league (13.0 ORB percentage). Center is the highest-paid position in basketball, and with word of Tiago Splitter signing a four-year, $36 million deal, Pekovic’s leverage increases.

Han: Four years, $42.5 million. Centers are notoriously overpaid in the league simply because of the dearth of serviceable bigs. Pekovic is more than serviceable, though, ranking ninth last season in PER among all centers. He’s a solid roll-man and a boulder of a defender on the low block. If a team can sign him for a low-eight-figure price, that’s a reasonable deal considering the position.

Sunnergren: Four years, $60 million. It might prove to be a bit of an overpay, but the nearly 300-pound Montenegrin — after just three seasons of NBA basketball — has blossomed into an efficient and effective scorer (he posted 16.3 PPG last season and a higher true shooting percentage than Brook Lopez), a plus defender and one of the league’s pre-eminent offensive rebounders. [this strikes me as MORE than the max Pek can be offered (~56,, no?)]

Winter: Four years, $48 million. Pekovic isn’t a role player and he’s not a superstar, either. He deserves more money than Splitter but not as much as Marc Gasol. He might earn more than this in reality, but Pek’s defensive deficiencies at the rim and in pick-and-roll situations mean his very good raw numbers paint an inaccurate portrayal of his overall impact. For a limited third wheel, this seems appropriate.

Oh course we should renounce AK's rights. We don't have bird or early bird rights for him anyways (he only played for us for 1 year)

Lot of BS at the beginning, but about 13 minutes in Lang Whitaker says Rubio has put on a noticeable amount of weight. In a good way.

yeah, but.... His agent is waiting for Howard to sign to set the market, and he's hoping someone who failed to get Howard will make PEK a big offer, so he's making us wait. Word is that Taylor now plans to match any offer.

I hope you're right, but $8m isn't even realistic. His QO is ~$8.8m I think. $12m+ seems more likely. ATL & DAL are possibilities if they fail to get Howard.

yeah, Asik to ATL makes sense, and that removes one more team that might have made a run at PEK.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/94...es-sources-say

Iggy went to GS. That could be a very good team. Utah took a bunch of dead weight salary from GS to make that happen, so Milsap & Big Al are probably both gone from there. Losing Iggy hurts DEN a lot - they got nothing in return for him. There's a very good chance the Wolves will take 2nd in the division next season.

Atlanta has almost no salary on their books at this point. The could offer him the max easily. Horford is basically a PF, so he & PEK would make for a very imposing front line.

CLE & DAL are not out of the running either.
