Last offseason was an absolute franchise-derailing disaster.

So are we gonna choose Jimmy over Towns or what?

There wasn’t too terribly much to derail.

At least we were fun to watch! And had hopes of being fun to watch in the future.

What do you guys think of the draft picks? I dont know a lot about either guy, but the smart people at Canis seem to like both picks a lot.

Okogie sounds like a high motor guy with long arms who defends well and he could get good at shooting 3s.

Diop sounds similar, but longer, older and has had injury issues. He sounds like a steal at 48. A lot of people expected him to go in the 1st round and some people thought we might take him at 20.

It would be pretty awesome if both are good enough to get significant minutes this season. Backup defensive minded wings on cheap contracts are exactly what we needed.

We got the #13 and #23 players on Dean Demakis' Draft Board:

Quote:
13. Josh Okogie 6’4″ SG/SF Georgia Tech

Okogie’s 6’4.5″ height may seem underwhelming for a wing, but he makes up for it with a monster 7’0″ wingspan, strong frame, and excellent athleticism. He also has a non-stop motor and lockdown potential as a man to man defender against multiple positions.

Offensively he is a good shooter and a decent passer, and has a good first step and handle to create shots but struggles to finish at the rim with poor body control.

Okogie projects to be a versatile 3 + D wing, and if he can improve his finishing he has sneaky upside.

23. Keita Bates-Diop 6’8″ SF/PF

Bates-Diop has excellent switching tools, as he is 6’8.5″ with 7’3.25″ wingspan, and good quickness. He can shoot, rebound, and protect the rim, and is ideal as a versatile 3 + D role player similar to Al-Farouq Aminu.

But at age 22 he has limited upside, as he does not have much ball skills and his feel for the game is only OK– he has a disappointing steal rate in spite of his monster length and has shown limited vision and passing.

He has good odds of being a useful role player, but upside concerns keep him out of the lottery conversation.

Post Draft Takeaways:

7) Minnesota with a pair of value picks

Josh Okogie and Keita Bates-Diop were two of the better value picks in the draft. They both have solid role player potential that can solidly upgrade Andrew Wiggins and Jamal Crawford longterm.

I’m also a buyer of Tyus Jones, and if Thibs can refrain from investing in too many flawed talents and gets rid of Wiggins, the Wolves could end up with a solid cast around Karl-Anthony Towns and Jimmy Butler.

I read Dean's stuff too. He said both players are better than Wiggins.

Its a low bar to clear. Hopefully we can trade him for something of value.

So I'm reading that Rose signed for the vet min. That's awesome!

Think we need to use the MLE on a wing still. MLE probably gets you Rodney Hood.

Not sure if anyone is gonna sign Bjelly. My guess is if anyone pays him he's probably gone. Too hard to go even 8M for him when we are already paying 30M to Taj and Gorgui who are worse and worse fits next to Towns.

Rose sucks, but at least we didnt spend a lot on him.

I'm hearing we have been very active in contacting potential FAs.

Also, I heard this Friday is when we can legitimately shop Wiggins. This has something to do with the timing of when his new contract kicks in.

Free agent forward Anthony Tolliver is nearing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, league sources tell Yahoo.

He's an ok backup.

But ffs we don’t have any more front court minutes, we need wings.

Wiggins for Love.

yeah, wtf?

We used our MLE on Anthony Tolliver (who is cool, don't get me wrong) and renounced Bjelly. So we didn't sign a wing and we used the MLE to sign yet another front court mate for Towns that is not better than Bjelly. Le sigh

yeah, we need wings badly. Hopefully this means we have confidence that one or both of the draft picks can play and contribute for significant minutes immediately.

YES. I was just talking to my wife about Wiggins for Love. Miami is another very possible destination for Wiggins. My dream is we somehow get Kawhi for Wiggins and scraps.

Yup, so far in free agency, we downgraded our backup 4/3 (Tolliver for Bjelly) and signed a washed up mutt (Rose) for the min. Hopefully more meaningful moves are coming.

Not sure it’s a downgrade when you consider health.

Don't think you can trade Wiggins without getting a wing or even 2 back. He eats up a lot of minutes so without him the depth...

Shabazz is still out there...isn't he?

Yes because he turned down the 4/40 Thibs offered him last offseason.

So how far in the playoffs do we need to go this season to persuade Butler to stay or is it a foregone conclusion that he is going to leave anyway ?

That's an important question imo. Some interesting flips you could do if he's gonna walk.

I kinda/sorta loathed last year's team so a reset would be cool with me. I really doubt Thibs would trade him tho as Thibs' job security would then be really tenuous and he knows he'd never get another basketball gig ever.

Rose just wants to be in the NBA. If he's on a roster, he makes 14 million dollars.

Rose’s agents were aggressively renegotiating his deal with Adidas, and during All-Star weekend Rose re-signed, consecrating one of the most lucrative endorsement contracts (reported to be worth $185 million over 14 years) in the history of sports.

He probably doesn't even really want to play basketball. The last 2 years he's taken random trips midseason.

He definite doesn't want to be there but not only does he get paid but so does his entourage. I don't think Adidas does similar deals anymore (14) due to this mistake. It's amazing how dumb of a move this was.

There might be something minor i have forgotten and his draft picks may work out in time who knows, but when Thibs' only good move on the personnel side is the trade for someone who loathes being on the team it is probably time to question his tenure anyway.
