It's going to be an interesting season if our best outside gunner is ... Eli Brooks? Isaiah Livers? Ugh. I assume Poole will get it going but it wasn't a good first game for his shot.
Matthews, yikes. I don't understand his form at the free throw line, if anything it's worse than last year. The way he sets up makes no sense, it's the basketball equivalent of a golfer aiming way left and hoping to slice it back to the fairway. Disclosure: I'm not an expert, just someone with a take.
We're going to be seeing a lot of zone defenses this year.
Team is gonna be fine. I think Teske is going to be the unheralded key to us having a great season. He’s a monster on Defense and will hold his own offensively. I feel like we’re starting from a place of being elite on defense with Z, Teske, Matthews, and can figure out our offense as the year goes on.
Poole is going to be the major key to the offense. He needs to morph from minor role player-outside shooter to go to guy when we need a possession. If Poole is confident and needs to be accounted for, that will open up so much for Iggy/Matthews off the dribble.
I wasn't willing to fork out for BTN+ but they put a replay of the Holy Cross game on BTN this afternoon so I recorded it. Watched the first half so far and I'm pleasantly surprised - the offense wasn't quite as brutal as it appeared from just following the ESPN box score. They actually got quite a few good shots, it wasn't just aimless gunning against a zone.
Still going to need X to assert himself more, get the screen and roll game working with Teske.
Dude is shooting 22% from 3 and took them on 3 straight possessions late in a close game. Mental lapses like that are inexcusable. Glad Beilein benched his ass.
Might be time to give DeJulius some more burn. And for the love of God, can we stop with Austin Davis already? Dude is a D2 player. Horrible at absolutely everything.
Give his minutes to Johns, or let Livers play the 5 when Teske sits.
Been watching Michigan a lot this year again and was looking at stats trying to figure out why Michigan is so great already. Last year, they took off by inserting Zavier Simpson into the starting lineup and playing him big minutes IMO. Really solidified the defense.
This year, it appears that the main reason is that Jon Teske is the college version of Rudy Gobert defensively. Best defensive rating in the entire nation. Elite defender surrounded by other great defenders. Super efficient offensively.
Obviously, IGNAS is the truth. Im pretty sure Poole is going to be in the NBA next year as well, but Livers looks fully healthy this year which he clearly wasnt down the stretch last year. Hes an absolute 3 + D weapon at his size. Think hes got to be the overwhelming favorite to win B1G 6th man of the year this year.
Dont see how anyone can argue any team is better than Michigan. Seem like the best team in the nation to me. Beilein doing Beilein things again.
