2018
2022?
2026?

actually i think our best hope is that we joint-host when it rotates back to NA in '26 or '30, and we snag a spot that way, lulz.

big friendly coming up against Jamaica in Toronto on September 9th!

Quote:
And head coach Benito Floro’s team – which is winless in its last 16 international matches, dating back to a 3-0 victory against Cuba in World Cup qualifying back on Oct. 12, 2012 – will be desperate to earn a victory against Jamaica on Sept. 9, to try and build some momentum ahead of next summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.
LOL!

this is the team's home debut under Floro, so come on, can we find a way to muster up a win, please? Jamaica, can you just let us have this? this is way past embarrassing.

so first let's talk about who is missing:

Quote:
Several other domestic-based players were on Floro’s radar but aren’t on the roster. Breakout rookie Tesho Akindele was contacted, but it was ultimately decided he would remain with FC Dallas during the MLS playoff stretch run (the league’s schedule continues through the FIFA international break).

Will Johnson (Portland Timbers) is expecting the impending birth of his son, while Russell Teibert (Vancouver Whitecaps) and Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC) also aren’t on the list. Cyle Larin, a striker with the University of Connecticut who earned his first CanMNT call-ups earlier this year, was reportedly called for this game but unable to attend.
so the Calgary-born Akindele was picked 6th in the 2014 Draft, and has bolted out of the gate with 7 goals in his first 14 starts as a rookie, good stuff. he's eligible to play for Nigeria, but that's fairly unlikely to ever happen. the bigger problem for us is that he's apparently close to becoming eligible to play for USA, so the danger is him going FULL TEAL on us. he sounds like a nice player to have in the mix going forward, for now i'll stay optimistic that he's willing to play for us.

Quote:
The team will begin assembling for training camp on Sunday. Canada’s next match, after the Jamaica friendly, is scheduled for Nov. 18 against Panama in Panama City.

Full Canada roster for Sept. 9 friendly vs. Jamaica:

GOALKEEPERS: Kenny Stamatopoulos (AIK/Sweden); Milan Borjan (unattached); Quillan Roberts (Toronto FC)

DEFENDERS: Nik Ledgerwood (Energie Cottbus/Germany); Andre Hainault (VfR Aalen/Germany); Doneil Henry (Toronto FC); Dejan Jakovic (Shimizu S-Pulse/Japan); Adam Straith (unattached); Karl W. Ouimette (Montreal Impact); Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé (Montreal Impact); David Edgar (Birmingham City/England)

MIDFIELDERS: Ashtone Morgan (Toronto FC); Julian de Guzman (unattached); Pedro Pacheco (CD Santa Clara/Portugal); Kyle Bekker (Toronto FC); Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas/Turkey); Marcel de Jong (FC Augsburg/Germany); Issey Nakajima-Farran (Montreal Impact); Patrice Bernier (Montreal Impact)

FORWARDS: Tosaint Ricketts (Hapoel Haifa/Israel); Simeon Jackson (Coventry City/England); Marcus Haber (Crewe Alexandra/England); Randy Edwini-Bonsu (Stuttgarter Kickers/Germany); Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC)

supposedly some of these guys are playing well with their club teams, hopefully that's true.

not even gonna try to predict a lineup or formation.

- Borjan was decent, don't know about MOTM though. hard one to pick though.
- not a fan of Hainault, Henry was pretty good playing out of position at RB, Edgar was good going foward but made a couple mistakes, same with De Jong. the defensive line got exposed a bunch, needs to be better going forward.
- de Guzman was ok, Hutchinson is our best player and hardly put a foot wrong, Bernier was also just alright. Edwini-Bonsu was nice and lively, as opposed to Nakajima-Farran who most decidedly was not. still haven't seen any evidence that Bekker is very good, but we don't really have many long-term options at this points, so beggars can't be choosers i guess. Osorio and Larin are other young hopes.
- Ricketts worked hard and did well with what he had to work with, so it was nice to see get rewarded by that gift of a goal. wanted to see Haber as i heard he had a good start to the season.

might be better to switch Henry and Edgar, allows the former to play his natural position, and the latter to get forward more. need to find better players than JdG & Bernier probably, and definitely INF. i guess Teibert is in Floro's doghouse for some reason, and that's why he wasn't called up this time around, but he could possibly be an instant improvement on the wing. or Hoilett of course, if he ever decides to play for us.

oh right, we have Will Johnson when he's not too busy in Portland. if Josh Simpson could regain his fitness and form after some nasty injuries he'd help a lot as well. and where's Kevin McKenna? don't see any indication that he's retired internationally or anything, he'd could solidify things as well. also i assume that Lars Hirschfeld is still in the picture and our #1 in net when we next have competitive matches. and Tesho Akindele could be a help if we could get him signed as well, might be the kind of goal producer we need.

Hirschfeld
Edgar - McKenna - Henry - De Jong
de Guzman
Jackson - Hutchinson - Johnson - Edwini-Bonsu
Ricketts

could be worse i guess.
i'm more hopeful than i was yesterday anyway.

Eligible to represent both the US and Canada national teams – and called up by both in the last year – FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele had a decision to make.

Although he turned down a call-up from Canada in fall 2014 and trained with the US national team in January, the Calgary, Alberta, native has decided to take his talents north of the border, accepting a Canadian call for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Dominica on June 11 and 16.

“At the end of the day, my whole life I’ve been a Canadian, and I’ve always thought about playing for the Canadian national team.” Akindele told MLSSoccer.com. ”So I kind of thought that was my goal always. So that’s what I should go for.”

“It’s exciting. It’s an honor,” Akindele said. “It’s something you dream about since you’re a little kid, so it’s really exciting that it’s finally come true.”

TEEESSSHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

23yo and 11 MLS goals to his name, Cyle Larin is 20yo and already has 5 goals in his first 11 MLS games ... WE MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE SOME KIND OF FUTURE HERE BOYS

Atiba still has a few good years left, Will Johnson is returning from injury, some of the other MLS guys are showing improvement, defense is still a worry with McKenna retired and Henry injured, but let's do this thing! 2018 World Cup qualifying starts tomorrow against mighty Dominica.

also provisional roster for the Gold Cup next month:

de Guzman
Johnson - Hutchinson
de Jong - Edgar - Henry - [whoever]

bench: Bunbury, etc

if only we didn't lose 8-1 to Honduras
or if only we didn't hit the bar thrice and took the home leg against them
or if only these guys played for us from the jump and we got better results throughout

*sigh*

oh well, we're on to Dominica
