Chiefs cut Donnie Edwards, Patrick Surtain and Damon Huard today. Surtain's release opened $6.2m in cap room, other two not soo much. This should be an epic off season.

Definitely expected that to happen, but its great news anyway.

Total savings from yesterday's moves: about $13.5 million."

So now we're about $50 million under?!?!

I'm not an expert at grading linemen, but I thought Albert was fantastic for a starting rookie LT. Dorsey didn't make many impact plays, but it takes a few years for a DT to dominate. I'm not sure if he did what they expected or not, someone else may know. Also Flowers and Carr did a pretty good job for 2 rookie corners.

Dorsey wasn't terrible but under what you'd expect for the #5 pick overall that many projected even higher w/o injury concerns. Here's hoping he gets on whatever "program" everyone else in the NFL trenches is on.

Also there's a lot of scuttlebutt in KC that Herm didn't use him properly by lining him up straight over the guard instead of shooting the gap. Dorsey is barely 6'1 and not really a space-eater like Haynesworth. Of course no one was saying this until Jason Whitlock wrote about it, now everyone on the Chiefs forums acts like it's common knowledge Dorsey wasn't used right, w/o crediting of course. So who knows. Also the Chiefs might switch to a 3-4, how Dorsey fits into that I personally have no idea.

Albert was awesome. I really like this kid a lot. The Chiefs may have LT locked up for the next 10-12 years.

Also it seems we may have grabbed 2 starting corners in this years draft, one in the 5th round. How often does that happen? They did pretty well, especially considering all the pressure put on them by the worst pass rush in the history of pro-football last year.

Chiefs’ All-Pro guard Waters wants out of Kansas City

Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters asked the organization Thursday to release or trade him this offseason, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Waters asked for his release two days after a brief meeting with new head coach Todd Haley and after being told by first-time general manager Scott Pioli that he had no interest in meeting with Waters, the source said.

Waters, according to the source, was offended and shocked by what he perceived to be the arrogance of Haley and Pioli. Waters’ meeting with Haley and follow-up phone conversations confirmed in the nine-year vet’s mind that the negative reports about Haley he heard from Arizona Cardinals players while at the Pro Bowl were accurate, according to the source.

The Cardinals players told Waters and tight end Tony Gonzalez that Haley, Arizona’s offensive coordinator, was aloof, condescending and ignored by veterans, the source said. Anquan Boldin, Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald Jr. — Arizona’s offensive stars — were all members of the NFC Pro Bowl team.

Haley could not be reached for comment Thursday night. Haley bickered with Boldin and Warner during the NFC championship game. And when he was an assistant with the Cowboys, Haley had several run-ins with flamboyant receiver Terrell Owens.

The source said when Waters informed Haley of his desire to relocate, Kansas City’s coach scolded Waters and indicated that the Chiefs would not release Waters from his contract. Waters signed a seven-year contract extension with the Chiefs in 2005. Waters, a four-time Pro Bowler, is 32 and would seemingly have decent trade value.

Waters declined public comment on Thursday.

He is the second high-priced Chiefs offensive star to ask for his release. Running back Larry Johnson has repeatedly asked to be let go. All-pro tight end Tony Gonzalez expressed disappointment when coach Herm Edwards was fired and has stated he will take a wait-and-see approach with the new regime.

Waters’ dissatisfaction is surprising given his reputation as a locker-room leader and his dedication to the organization. Waters is heavily involved in charitable activity in the Kansas City community and was a finalist for the NFL’s 2008 Man of the Year Award.

According to the source, Waters flew to Kansas City specifically to meet with Haley and Pioli and hear their plan for the direction of the organization. Pioli declined to meet with Waters, saying they had nothing to discuss, the source said. And Haley began his hallway conversation with Waters by proclaiming that 22 players off the street could win two games, the source said.

Waters considered his options Wednesday, flew to Dallas and then tried reaching owner Clark Hunt and Pioli before telling Haley on Thursday that he felt their differences were irreconcilable, the source said.

Waters joined the Chiefs in 2000 and became a starter in 2001.

Well I've had some time to think about this. I was pretty upset at this at first. But the more I think about it, we don't know the whole context. All we know for sure is Waters demanded to speak to Pioli ad Haley, was rebuffed to a large degree, then went crying to Whitlock - the official anti-Bob Gretz.

Well let's see, what "source" would have first hand knowlegde of the inner-working of Brian Waters' mind? I just wonder if Waters called Whitlock in a huff, Whitlock published the story, leaving Waters anonymous as requested - but wrote it in such a way that makes Waters ultimately look as bad as Haley/Pioli, if not worse.

this article doesn't make waters look bad imo. it doesn't give all the details, but the ceo analogy doesn't fit b/c if i'm not mistaken waters was a team captain.

if a new ceo joins a company it would be pretty silly of him to ignore senior level workers that remain on staff unless he wanted to create a rift between himself and his employees from the get go. yeah there is a business to run but part of making sure it runs well is insuring a smooth transition in leadership

who knows what happened though. it's possible waters demanded to see him or something as former team captain and haley was too busy, but being too busy to talk isn't the same as having no reason to talk

Are they trading for him, or signing him and paying New England the penalty? If they're just signing him, that's pretty awful.

EDIT: Looks like a trade. It's exciting for KC fans as Cassel is good, but if NE wanted to do it something tells me KC probably overpaid slightly.

Don't like it. Thigpen showed heart last year with a terrible offense, should of upgrading the line and given him another year. Cassell won't be much of an upgrade without a sick oline/welker helping him

Holy crap if you can get Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel for a 2nd rd. pick you take it. This is a steal for the Chiefs (good for Pats too as the obviously couldn't afford to have so much cap space tied up in two QBs.) And Vrabel can still play.

Except is Cassel going to agree to a long term deal when he can just take 14 million for this one year?

Waiting on Romeo: Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel is convalescing from successful hip replacement surgery and weighing an offer to become the defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs are holding the position open for Crennel, who is waiting to learn exactly how long his rehabilitation process will keep him out. The Chiefs may have enticed Crennel a little bit more by trading for New England linebacker Mike Vrabel.

Whether or not Crennel accepts, he has decided not to remain with the Browns in an unspecified role offered by Mangini.

Crennel previously declined an offer to rejoin Charlie Weis as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. Crennel and Weis were Belichick's coordinators during New England's three Super Bowl championship seasons.
