Replay angles don't show Clark, but I'd bet he didn't put up any signs at all. It was a flukey infield single so he probably assumed JD was stopping at 3rd.
The more I think about it, I think it might have been Upton's fault. He can't assume JD's going home from 2nd on an infield grounder. He has to make sure JD is really going before he heads to 3rd. OTOH, JD did take a pretty wide turn at 3rd, so maybe that's what made Upton think he was going.
I was 3 rows behind the Tigers Dugout even with third base. When I saw the ball get passed the 2b, I assumed JD was scoring 100%. Then I saw he was in a run down and was the wtf
My dad said he heard on post game that Dave Clarke waved JD home and then pointed and third (presumably to tell upton to go to third). That caused JD to stop
I'm convinced this 100% on Clarke. The only way that JD stops is if Clarke gives him some sort of sign
If Clarke was in the coaches box JD runs by him and scores and upton is at third
"It's tough, because [Martinez has] got his back to the play," Ausmus said. "It looks like it's going to be at least knocked down in the infield, so Clark is holding him up, and then it gets past the bare hand of the second baseman and it kind of trickles into the outfield. But at that point, J.D. has come to a full stop, so it's hard to restart again."
Clark tried to send Martinez once he saw the ball in right, but by the time Martinez noticed, he had stopped rounding third.
"I'm looking at Clarky, and I'm thinking score right off the bat," Martinez said. "And when I come up on Clarky, he kind of stops me, so I'm thinking the ball's still in the infield. And when I look up, the ball's in the outfield. So I'm like, 'What just happened?' And by that time, it was too late [to break for home]."
Well, he started throwing in the 9th and hit season high 91 when he finally came in. It was just one of these games where weird things happened and there is nothing you can do about it.
Aging closer who's average pitch is like 83mph. I'm shocked that he's getting slaughtered. It's this organizations fault though. You have Jimenez destroying the minors who would instantly come up and be the best relief pitcher we have, and they simply don't bring him up. Still have Aviles on the roster. It's just sickening how stupid these ****ing clowns are.
We have to face King Felix, Darvish, Hamels too... this could get ugly fast. Looking like a 1-5 road trip.
