Giving Joe Jiminez his shot at being the closer is a fantastic way to tank for the number one pick.

Nothing says "hey, I'm going to be a great closer" quite like failing miserably at multiple eighth inning setup auditions over the course of years.

Brad Ausmus: Fired twice!

Verlander and Scherzer both managed to lower their ERA significantly at an age where it usually should go up. That indicates that there was a huge leak.

Btw, Moore elected free-agency after missing the whole season.

Still paying for Fielder who is already retired and for Zimmerman who should have retired a few years ago looks really depressing. Even more depressing to me is that Avila kept his job.

I watched this post-haste after seeing Mr. Cashman introduce Cole.

Avila was the guy who let Scherzer go and who signed Zimmerman, right?

Btw, Moore signed in Japan. Apprently their offer was better than ours (if there was one).

The signings of Cron/Schoop could be what it takes to keep us out of the #1 pick in 2021. Not sure how I feel about this. The orioles aren’t playing games and are committed to the tank. Itll be a battle right down to the end again.

Imagine being told in February that on July 27th they'd be tied for first?

This team has an intriguing nucleus of pitchers, but my god can we get some bats please?

There is a theory that the 8th inning is more important than the 9th, because the opponent has 6 outs to work with. If that is true, then Soto is the real closer and Jimenez isn't that important. If not then Jimenez has to be demoted. He has obviously lost velocity on his fastball which now sits at 95. That's not bad, but it's certainly not outstanding (enough). There isn't much movement to it either. He is just an average reliever.

Jimenez sucks, he’s never been effective. He can’t locate consistently and has no movement. It’s been a fever dream all along that he would develop into a legit closer.

Nice to see Soto on a hot streak, who knows if it will continue.

Mize has 3 great pitches: 96, 94 with movement and the splitter. That's absolutely good enough. I hope he stops throwing that slider. It's clearly his worst pitch and it puts too much stress on his elbow.

Yep. My take is breaking pitches are overrated. A good changeup (splitter) will usually get the job done.

My concern is this: When power pitchers (95+) throw sliders, they put too much force on their elbow and that it leads to injury. It was easier for guys like Dan Petry who didn't have the 90+ in his arsenal. He threw his 88 mph fastball and his nice little slider and it was ok.

For Fulmer - with 98 mph - adding the slider to his repertoire just killed his elbow. It was taught to him in the Tigers system and that was a clear mistake. I would have to go through my postings here, because I am sure that I called it after reading this.

https://www.pitcherlist.com/going-de...-some-changes/

The result was surgery and the loss of 5 mph on his fastball. Now he is just barely average.

Fulmer is great, but we need to make the most out of his performance while it lasts.
I also called it on Rondon btw. They made the identical mistake with him and it ruined his career.

On the other hand, once Rondon is used up, we got like 5 more 100mph-guys waiting in the minors to get their arms destroyed. In a way, pitchers are like fuel.
Power pitchers should not throw sliders, period! Curveball is ok.
