Thanks for sharing that, Bosco!

I know I've shared my dislike for the previous regime but its just so refreshing to have a front office/coaching group I can root for again. They can and probably will fail (it is the lions we're talking about here) but this group 100% has my support as a fan.

Alright it's been 2 months. Bumpy time. First preseason game of the MCDC era is tonight. He's said he plans on playing the starters for about a quarter. While I'm not going to be the guy who sits on his fatass griping about how players these days are soft and coddled, I do think that the current minimum contact requirements in training camp are leaving players (especially linemen) somewhat unprepared for the season. You have to balance the risk of injury vs. preparing for the regular season, and I think giving starters some preseason experience is warranted. Especially when you have a relatively inexperienced team like this one.

I probably wont watch tonight, but will try to keep up with the highlights. What I want to see:
1. Can the wide receivers do anything? Reports from camp is they all look pretty bad.
2. Can they run the ball effectively? The O-Line is now the strength of this team, and they are going to be dressing some no name UDFA RB's tonight. Can they run well behind this line? Hopefully yes.
3. Are they generating more pass rush? Apparently Alim McNeill is balling out at NT this camp and is likely going to be a high snap count starter this season. Let's get him some action.
4. Defense overall. It was pretty much WOAT last season. I can't imagine it gets any worse. I'm sure there will be plenty of mistakes and big plays given up, but I want to see progress on a down to down basis.

How is this so hard for people.

My take is that algorithms should make 95% of all in game decisions including play calls. There might be some of that going on behind the scenes now, who knows.

Good video. After watching that it is clear to me that Lions season over 5 is the greatest lock of this century.

I'm not touching that line. There are still too many things working against this team. Largest dead cap hit in the league. Downgrade at QB. WOAT defense last season. They are a high variance team, that's for sure. But honestly I would not be surprised at all with any results between 0-17 and 10-7. I actually DGAF how many games this team wins this year. It's a rebuild year of the worst kind. All I really need to see is 1. Does this team have a good core of young players and 2. Is Jared Goff a realistic option at QB beyond 2022.

If the answer to either question is yes, that should translate to wins, but they could still be pretty awful in the wins column and have some promise going forward.

Pretty pumped to watch the Lions this year, and let me tell you why.

After cord cutting last year I subscribed to Locast.org for $5 a month, it uses your phone location to deliver your 'local' tv stations. Basically anything that is broadcast over the airwaves in my local market is in HD on my phone and can be chromecast to my TV

So, using the Locast app, developer options for Android, and a location spoofer I can set my location to Detroit and watch all the games on FOX 2. Now I get the Lions in true HD and no longer have to search around for a usable signal, as a bonus I also get all the local personal injury attorney ads!

Lions now know what 5 other teams know; he has none of the qualities that made his dad a fan favorite. Hate to say 'sucks' but definitely applicable in this case and keeping him, even for monetary reasons, sends the wrong message to the rest of the team.

Perriman is not good. A lot has been made of the Lions having too many slot receivers and not enough wideouts, and that Perriman makes it by default for that reason. I guess he plays the role of the guy who just runs a lot of go routes and stretches the field to open up space underneath. I'm not knowledgeable enough to say he deserves to make it for that reason alone, over a guy like Tom Kennedy who actually makes plays. But I'd rather see them keep the best 4 or 5 receivers regardless, and then figure out a scheme that takes advantage of the talent they have, rather than keep crappier players to fit a more traditional offense.

I also cord cut this year. I waited until after the superbowl to ensure I didn't miss much during the transition. I went with an Amazon Re-Cast DVR which has been really nice. I get a pretty good signal for the local stations. My preferred method of watching a 1:00 game is to DVR it, and start around 2:30, fast forwarding through half time and commercials, so being able to do that with just an over the air antenna is pretty nice.

It's cutdown day, they need to be at 53 by 4pm I think. Perriman is already cut, no surprise. They have to eat his guaranteed money, but sunk costs are sunk costs.

The bigger surprise was Mike Ford being cut. He was a special teamer who flashed some skills as a CB in recent years. Hopefully they can practice squad him, but he's pretty likely to be picked up by other teams. The Lions have decent depth at CB, just not a lot of top end talent, so I guess I sort of understand it. You figure Okudah, Oruwariye, and Melifonwu are roster locks, even though all of them are basically playing at a backup level. AJ Parker has been an absolute stud lately, so he was safe. Corn Edler missed a lot of camp time but grabbed the only preseason interception. Nickell Robey-Coleman was a late add who brings some experience, so I guess that just doesn't leave a lot of room for Ford. And it's not even guaranteed that all the names I mentioned above are safe.

It wasn't a great preseason, but it feels like Tom Kennedy and Craig Reynolds made enough plays that they should earn a shot. I'll be a bit disappointed if those two get cut.

Finally we might be done with Jahlani Tavai. It was laughable when he got picked in Rd. 2. He hasn't looked very good in 2 seasons. Even slimmed down this year he is still not great.

terrell crosby is pretty surprising as well imo. fingers crossed somebody decent is a cap casualty at WR or something because this is bad, this is real bad!

Crosby was definitely a surprise. The problem is he's one of the best backup swing tackles in the league, probably good enough to start on some teams. Rumors are he asked out. It was even unclear if he was going to show up at camp or hold out entirely. The other rumor is they were actively shopping him around. I'm a bit surprised there were no takers. They probably knew they had no chance of keeping him past this season, barring a potential multi-season injury to either of the two starting tackles, and could use the cap space now to try and shore up one of the position groups that desperately needs help.

The problem now is they are dangerously short at OT. Their only capable backup is Matt Nelson. They can swing Vaitai to RT and backfill with a guard in a pinch, but that's their depth. While it's normally the plan to have your starting 5 O-Line play every snap of every game, good luck keeping them healthy all season.

A little surprised Crosby and Ford were cut but honestly not sure I can make a case for keeping either. I thought Crosby was the type of player nearing the end of his time in Detroit but would've made an attractive trade target for any contender that loses a tackle early in the year

Tavai already done. Just searched the thread for our takes on him when we drafted him their wasnt many posts but we all knew he was going to be a bust. Quinn just loved jacking off picks.

It was just such a ****ing dumb pick at the time. There was just nothing there to even remotely consider him being a 2nd rounder. At that point in the draft you should still be looking for top end talent. If you really love the guy and think he could be a steal you can maybe start thinking about it in the 4th round, but rounds 1 through 3 are for guys who have starter level talent now. Quinn just loved the smell of his own farts so much and I think he got off on making these stupid picks that he thought were smart. We got taken to the cleaners so much by NE while Quinn was here on all these dumbass mind games and trades. I got a little bit of that same vibe when Holmes traded Stafford for Goff but at least there we got 2 first rounders and we know Stafford wanted out anyways.

Craig Reynolds got cut. He had a hell of a preseason. Hopefully he clears waivers and we can practice squad him. We also traded for a practice squad WR from Denver.

Two down run stuffing LB's are a dime a dozen in today's NFL. Taking one in the second was egregious.

Did a quick twitter dive on the Denver WR. Trinity Benson, 6ft 24yo speedster who was on their practice squad the past two years. Basically brought in to do what they hoped Perriman could, play outside and keep safties somewhat honest. The Denver beat reporters seem to like the kid quite a bit, actually, and seem to think Detroit did fine in the trade (Det 5th/7th for Benson & a 6th).

I know this year is gonna be rough but I was getting a little panicked about WR because we quite literally only had one outside WR with a gaggle of uber slow slot guys. St Brown ran in the 4.6's, Cephus ran in the 4.7's! Those guys aren't winning outside with any consistency.

There's something about having a WR who can just fly. Even if he's not incredibly productive, just the fact that he can burn you with his speed is enough to keep defenses honest.

I do sometimes think too much is made of whether a guy is a slot or an outside receiver. If you can run routes and catch the ball, you're a receiver. But there is something to being able to run the full route tree and spread the defense out. His RAS is OK. Decent athleticism, poor size. I'm not thrilled with giving up a 5th rounder for a guy who couldn't get off Denver's practice squad and had a decent chance of being available. It's a sign of some desperation at WR.

We have no idea if Benson clears waivers to pick 7 - there are a quite a few teams ahead of us that need help at WR too so it comes down to trusting the front office. Hell - if they say they wanted this guy, this year and they say its worth a 5 and 7 for Benson and a 6th then **** it. Lets roll the dice

also Denver has arguably the deepest WR corps in the league, in theory a guy making their practice squad should be a roster player on some other teams
