Maybe. But to be fair the guy has been an interim HC before, and also has the assistant HC title at NO. So there is something about this guy, who at a few different organizations, despite never getting a coordinator position, showed enough leadership qualities to be considered the 2nd in command.
Also this is different from past hires like Mooch, Patricia, and even Caldwell, where they keyed in on their guy early and just brought in a token Rooney rule black guy. Campbell isn't official yet, and 3 of the 5 interviewed coaches left are black. They've cast a wide net, interviewed a lot of guys, hired a black GM, and seem to have narrowed in on a young coach who has been around and shown the skills needed to be considered a HC at a couple different organizations.
I have no reason to think this time will be any better, but they have at least taken a different approach to this search. And the expectation bar is lowered now. For Patricia he was expected to be a playoff contender in year 1 and started off by getting blown out at home by sam darnold and the jets. If they can at least threaten 8-8 next year it will be considered a success.
