Looks like coaching candidates are slowly whittling down to a few. Saleh to the jets and Arthur Smith to the Falcons. The remaining group seems to be:

Eric Bieniemy - Chiefs OC. I'm not sure how serious he is as a HC candidate but he's getting a few interviews. I don't know much about the guy but a lot of buzz is no one seems to think he'll make a good HC, he just gets interest because he's the OC for the SB winning offense. The longer this drags on the more likely he might be their guy because they can't announce this until the Chiefs are out of the playoffs.

Todd Bowles - Bucs DC and former Jets HC. His time with the Jets is questionable, but I don't think too many coaches could have done much with that roster. He did hilariously embarass Matty P back in that 2018 opener. Not sure how serious he is, but same as Eric, it may be a while before we hear anything if he's the guy.

Dan Campbell - NO Saints TE coach & assistant HC. Don't know much about this guy. He played for the Lions back in 06-08, but was hurt a lot. He had a brief run as the Dolphins interim HC.

Marvin Lewis - I think we all know about this guy. The longer this drags on, the less likely it's him. He's probably the fallback guy just in case.

Darrell Bevell - He's complaining about the frustrating wait to hear if he got the job. Suck it up dude. This team is garbage and you own a part of that. I wouldn't hate it if he got the job, but I'm liking the guy less and less every day.

Ian Rappaport on twitter saying the Lions want Campbell. If that's the case, we have to wait until the Saints are eliminated.

Nothing screams LIONS more than hiring a GM with no GM experience and a head coach that played on a team that went 0-16.

I was behind the GM signing. Not behind the hiring of Dan Campell which makes me question the GM. I was hoping he would bring Brandon Staley the Rams D coordinator with him. A fkn TE coach from the Saints come on.

After watching the games this weekend

Do you really see dan Campbell as a contender to look like these coaches in three years.

I feel like we have another 3 year coach where we might go 8-8 once and it's going to be terrible.

This is definitely a "white = right" example. It's basically impossible to jump from TE coach to HC for a non-white person.

I have a friend, Bill, who you have met before (I think like once many years ago). He's what I call an expert Jedi Lions fan becuz his take is the only rational take I have ever seen. Which goes like this: Look, I know they will never get the right guy for the job, the last 60-70 years have taught us that, and I know they will usually screw up the draft, drafting TEs in the top 10, slow DBs in the top 5, passing up on Randy Moss, not drafting Tua, etc, but I don't care. I just want something to watch and root for on Sundays.

Maybe. But to be fair the guy has been an interim HC before, and also has the assistant HC title at NO. So there is something about this guy, who at a few different organizations, despite never getting a coordinator position, showed enough leadership qualities to be considered the 2nd in command.

Also this is different from past hires like Mooch, Patricia, and even Caldwell, where they keyed in on their guy early and just brought in a token Rooney rule black guy. Campbell isn't official yet, and 3 of the 5 interviewed coaches left are black. They've cast a wide net, interviewed a lot of guys, hired a black GM, and seem to have narrowed in on a young coach who has been around and shown the skills needed to be considered a HC at a couple different organizations.

I have no reason to think this time will be any better, but they have at least taken a different approach to this search. And the expectation bar is lowered now. For Patricia he was expected to be a playoff contender in year 1 and started off by getting blown out at home by sam darnold and the jets. If they can at least threaten 8-8 next year it will be considered a success.

I think the GMs plan is hire this guy to buy yourself an excuse for the first few years of sucking. You don't want to bring in your hand-picked guy from the Rams right away as you might lose a couple seasons.

Good theory

I'm guessing it will be debunked when we don't trade stafford and pick WR at 7

The hand picked guy from the Rams would have been Brandon Staley who just got hired by the Chargers.

That's the plan for like 29 of the franchises. Some of them manage to luckbox their way out of it every now and then.

Thats who I was hoping we could get. Esp when I heard we were getting Rams GM. Ofc Staley wasnt coming here over the Chargers. The Chargers have a 2nd year QB with more upside than Stafford, good WRs, and talent on defense. Oh yeah there also located in LA.

They don't luck box. They find elite QB in the draft

We had a once in a decade chance to do this and we picked a CB at 3 that will be out of the league in 4 years.

If anything campbell should be good for some entertainment. Jim Caldwell was bore and Patricia was a whiney douche. We might get to see some headsets smashed and Gatorade coolers tossed.
