At least we have a HOF TE.

A ****ing tradition unlike any other.

One thing this franchise has a storied history of is drafting and then squandering the careers of GOAT skill position players. It's sort of fitting they gave the kid Charlie Sanders number, because with this franchise he's likely to have the same career arc. Regular pro-bowler, HOF, then retire early without the team ever really winning anything.

Now that I've gone from piss drunk to hungover, I have some thoughts.

1. How was the run defense this bad? Sure, they didn't give up many splash plays on the ground, but in the 2nd half whenever Arizona needed yards on the ground, they got them.

2. Trey Flowers debut was awful. I didn't see the guy make one play. I hope I'm not overreacting to one game, but our 17 million dollar DE may end up joining the long list of Patriots who take huge contracts elsewhere then **** the bed.

3. For all the capital put it into our O-Line, it looks like another fatal flaw. I saw both Decker and Ragnow be less effective than tackling dummies on some plays.

4. The passing game and Stafford looks like they're back, but don't forget this is a really awful Cardinals team that is missing their starting 2 cornerbacks. Think how good any NFL offense would look against Detroit if Slay & Coleman were out.

5. Even after all that, this team might have the talent to be competitive, if this coaching staff doesn't hold them back, which of course they will. For all the talk of Matty P being a rocket scientist, he's more like half the other morons I went to engineering school with, who can barely find their own ******* and just cheat their way through.

Flowers could very well just be a guy that was good due to being on the Pats that we overpaid. Happens all the time. The cards are **** he should of killed it. Hopefully thats not the case because i thought he was going to be good.

Week 2 is a must win. Chargers at home. We lose that were in big trouble.

We could very well open 0-5-1 and it wouldnt be surprising at all.We get 2 cupcakes after that in Giants and Raiders but overall this schedule isnt easy. That cards game was a gimme.

Nothing about this win gave me any optimism going forward. O-line looked better I guess.

D looked lost in 2nd half for the most part
Patricia not using a single timeout all game. Not calling one with 1:20 left in 1st half and Chargers facing 2nd & 8 from at their own 3 was lighting points on fire.
Run game looks same as it has since 1997
Receivers rarely get separation downfield. Every time we have a play >10 yards it's Stafford hitting a tight window and WR making a great catch.

5-11 1-5 in the division

I can't really argue with any of that. It was not a great game. I guess the Pass D was ok.

On one hand they just beat a team that many had pegged as super bowl favs. On the other, they looked like the same 6-10 team we saw last year.

Biggest letdown has to be the front 7. With all the top tier FA's and draft capital dumped into it, they still generate almost no pressure and are getting gashed in the run game.

It is nice to see them living and dying by the deep ball again. That's Stafford's strength, might as well play to it. Yeah, he made a couple reckless throw's today, but I can live with that in a W.

I also want to make the Lions coaching staff commit this article to memory.

If I were a coach my playcalling would be randomized by algorithm. You dial in the down and distance, and it spits out a play, weighted towards plays that work, with just a few surprises in there to stay balanced. You punch in 1st and 10, and it would be something like 85% pass and 15% run. Maybe it's the poker player in me, but I would rather have a GTO playcalling strategy instead of the unwinnable leveling war crap these coaches seem to get into.

I will be cheering for the Lions at the Linc tomorrow. If you see an old fat dude with glasses in a Sanders #20 getting his ass kicked in the parking lot its probably me.

Lions ****ing owe me after 2013 snow game but I have resigned myself to never collecting on their debts.

Well I didn’t think it would happen like that. Lions are innovators in losing.

Somehow philly had more WIL than the lions. Impressive.

Expert playcalling by Matty P and Bevell again. Offense has the ball, need to ice the game. 2 run plays that go nowhere, an incomplete pass, and a blocked FG. Peak Lions. The fact that they didn't lose this game is nothing short of a miracle.

I'm not buying this team quite yet. Two ugly wins and ugly tie. I need to see some combination of more aggressive offense and/or a better run game. They are going nowhere on the ground and that isn't going to get the job done against KC next week.

The D-Line played better this week, but still way under-performing. Once again, the only time I hear Flowers name called is for a ticky-tacky but still critical roughing the passer.

I’d take KC next week pretty much regardless of line.

The opening lines for the Chiefs game are around 7. I would have guessed it would be closer to 12 or 14, so I guess thats good. I would snap take the Chiefs at -6.5. Maybe Vegas sees something from this Lions team that I dont, or thinks their overly conservative offense can keep it close.

It's funny that if we hadn't called time out vs. ARI we'd be 3-0 and I'd think this was actually the year. Instead I'm looking to mortgage the house to bet on the chiefs -7.

(I looked back at the ARI game summary, and this stood out: per ESPN, Between 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter and 1:45 left in the 4th quarter, the Lions never had less than 88% chance to win, and got as high as 99%. It's been said but bears repeating: SOL.)

I stand by my statement. This is the best lions team since 14. They can get it done this year if they clean up some mistakes.
