My first instinct was WTF center. Such a boring pick. Reading about him though sounds likes hes been flying up the draft board. Hopefully he turns into one of those 10year probowl guys who never miss a game and we get a steal.

I'm down with it. Can play center, can play guard, very highly rated at his position, injury was a high ankle sprain that can happen to anyone.

Im OK drafting oline if they think they needed to, I am just surprised they went there at 20. I guess it was a bad year for trading down. Ravens moved down from 16 to 22 and only got a 3rd rounder for it. Still though, they did need to acquire more picks and it seems like if they were going oline they could have dropped 10 or so spots and still gotten a starter. Taylor Decker was a solid pick so hopefully Quinn has a good eye for Oline talent. Although he also signed Greg Robinson so...

Three year starter, team captain, zero sacks in 3 years of SEC play. 9.84 RAS score ranks 16 overall out of 926 combine participants. I'll take it.

whoops. 9.84 apparently for guards. His overall score was 9.93 which was 10th overall at the combine. Regardless, the guy can play and has off the charts athleticism.

Wanted a DT, but both DT I was hoping for were already gone.

Can’t be mad about getting more line play.

With hope we pick d line and rb next two picks

The more I read about this guy the more I like the puck. Its also nice we sniped the bengals pick. They took a worse rated center the next pick.

Hoping to get a good rb and some dline the rest the way.

Looking at it, going O-Line at 20 was definitely the safer pick. Ragnow is likely a long time starter in the NFL. The only D-Lineman we could say the same about were already off the board: Chubb, Vea, Payne.

The three Dline players still available all had some reasonable concerns:
Bryan - Undersized and very raw.
Hurst - Heart condition.
Landry - Attitude and injuries.

Obviously other GM's felt the same as the only one of those guys who actually went in the first round was Bryan at #29.

You saw the run on O-Line start as the Bengals picked a Center at #21, and the Pats grabbed Isaiah Wynn at #23 - who would have been my O-Line pick at #20, but only because Ragnow was off my radar. Reading about him now I see no real reason not to pick him at #20, other than who was still available at other positions.

The way this pick backfires is if Landry, Hurst, or Bryan put together big seasons while the Lions still struggle to get to the QB. I think this is a good indicator that Patricia has some plans for front 7 that aren't personnel related. We'll see more 3-4 looks with pass rush coming from other places.

There's also the possibility that one of the 2 names on my D-Line draft board falls all the way to #51. If not, I'd be willing to take a round 3 gamble on RJ McIntosh if he's still out there. The only real issue is how raw he is coming out of college so early, but he's probably the last DT prospect left that seems to fit the traditional NFL mold.

As for RB, with Blount coming in and if Tion Green takes the next step, they could potentially wait one more year to make any major decisions. Guice is probably gone by #51. Kerryon Johnson seems like a good fit that the Lions like, and they could try to take him anywhere from rd. 2 to 4.

So yeah, I'd be content if their next 2 picks are Kerryon Johnson and RJ McIntosh, even though I think both picks are a bit of a reach at those spots.

I'm hoping Hurst,Guice,or Landry fall to us. I know its not likely but if they do and Quinns grabs them I'll be geeked.

When the best two DT are gone, it’s clear thy went best available and thought it was this guy.

+1 for me liking what I'm reading about Ragnow, after an initial "who??" moment.

Koss thx for the right up, good stuff.

Wow, a trade UP for Kerryon Johnson, and Guice was still on the board. I knew they liked him, but I thought he would be a reach at 51, but they jumped to 43 for him. They are going to have to make some cuts at RB this offseason. Probably Washington and then one of either Zenner or Green. I wouldnt be shocked if Abdullah wasnt traded or a surprise cut just to give him a fresh start.

Hmmm not sure how I feel about the trade up. Could of standed pat and took him or grabbed Guice if he was gone. 3rd round I'm grabbing Hurst but I'm not Quinn so maybe I'm way off base here. I felt like getting some dline was a must.

I have to imagine Hursts heart problem is worse than thought. There is no way someone that good gets through round 3 unless there is a very real chance he never plays an nfl game.

Going safety in round 3 is yet another sign of where this defense is going. We are going to see a lot of 3-4 or 3-3 looks. I would not be surprised to see their next pick be an edge LB and them ignore DT entirely at this point.

Didn’t we sign 2 LB this off season?

We have a 2018 draft class. The standard metric of the draft is to get 3 starters. Better teams are going to struggle to get this as they draft later and already have good rosters, but using that as a Metric, let's see what we've got:

Frank Ragnow C - Big powerful lineman who can play both center and guard. A pretty safe pick, as the Lions depth at this position was poor, and despite not getting a lot of pre-draft coverage it appeared this guy was a lock to go by pick 25, so good value. It's not clear whether they will play him at guard or center, my guess is they will work him and Glasgow in at both positions during camp and see what works best, but it's pretty much a lock this guy starts day 1. Chance of starting game 1 - 95%

Kerryon Johnson RB - A pretty good all around running back. He's not quite the mauler that Guice is, but they signed that guy in Blount and still have Tion Green on the roster for now. He has a running style consistent with some of the better backs in recent history, so his ceiling is pretty high if he adjusts well to the NFL. It's hard to even know what a starter really is at this position. In Bob Quinn's press conference he mentioned that the number of running backs you can give 30 carries to per game can be counted on a couple fingers. While they didn't draft him to be the #4 option at this position, he'll have to work is way up the rotation. Maybe he can get there by the start of the season, but this offense tends to be hard on running backs. They are asked to do a lot in pass protection, and it will be tough for him to learn all that by day 1 and earn a majority of snaps at RB. It's going to be RB by committee, and he'll be a part of that, but I expect them to work him in more as the season progresses. Chance of starting game 1 - 40%

Tracy Walker S - A versatile defensive back who can play all over the field. Defensive backfield was a strength for this team last year, so it was surprising to see them use their first defensive pick on a safety, but clearly they see some serious potential in this guy. He'll probably be used in some of the multiple safety sets Patricia is going to run. It's very unlikely he unseats any of the other starters any time soon, but he'll get some snaps on defense and special teams. Glover Quin has 2 years left on his contract and is approaching his shelf life at DB, and they are going to see if he has the skills to take over the starting FS spot in a couple years. Chance of starting game 1 - 15%

Da'Shawn Hand D-Line - They went with another versatile player here. He's listed as DE but can probably play all over the line. Despite being a 4th rounder, with how bad the D-Line play was last year, he could potentially unseat some of the more experienced players on the roster if he has a strong camp and preseason. I'm not sure he's the prospect to do it. He seems like a mature player who may not have as high of a ceiling as some of the other more athletic linemen still around, but they saw something they liked in him as they traded some future draft capital to grab him. Chance of starting game 1 - 25%

Tyrell Crosby OT - Another versatile player (noticing a trend) who can play tackle or guard. I think this is a fine pick. He can back up any number of linemen, and this is an often injured position as theses guys are involved in violent collisions every snap. It was clear there was a significant drop off after the starting 5 last year, and their FA signings didn't really move that needle. Barring injury this guy has no shot at playing, but could be the top backup if he has a good camp, and is a possible future RG if they move on from Lang in a couple years. Chance of starting game 1 - 5%

Nick Bawden FB - While I was surprised to see them use a pick on a fullback, by the 7th round teams are usually just grabbing best player available, and guys drafted in these rounds are largely indistinguishable from UDFAs. This may have been a strictly special teams pick (Nick Bellore watch out!) but they probably at least experiment with using more lead blocker sets and give him a chance. I'll call him a true "starter" if he gets more than 10 offensive snaps in game 1. I suspect that doesn't happen, but who knows. Maybe what's old is new again and we see a return to the true power run game with a mauler for a lead blocker. Chance of starting game 1 - 10%

This draft will ultimately be judged based on what they didn't do. While I doubt Ragnow and Johnson are busts, their pass rush was awful last year and they chose not to address it. Since their defensive scheme is going to get overhauled, it looks like they believe they can get a lot more out of their defensive personnel than the outgoing coaching staff. On paper I'm not sure I agree with it, but we will see what happens in September.

It's not how I would have drafted it. It's clear some guys that were high on mine and others draft boards were not as high on NFL GM's boards. Harold Landry was expected to be top 20 and Derrius Guice was expected to be a late 1st or early 2nd rounder . I'm not surprised by Landry's slide to #41, but I think Guice was worth more than #59. I would have made Taven Bryan the 1st round pick and Guice the 2nd rounder, and looked to add depth to O-Line in the 3rd. When moving up to the 4th round I would've grabbed another D line player in RJ McIntosh, a player with a high ceiling, who ended up going early 5th.

Well that was a fun couple weeks following the draft. Now we wait a few months to see these guys in action, and what this team, especially the defense, can do under Matt Patricia.

Ameer Abdullah was on Michael rappaports podcast. It’s cool listening to athletes get “interviewed” in a more conversational setting.

Rappaport may not be for everyone. It’s the last half of the podcast.
