In fact, if Mays (or Earl Thomas bigger pipe dream) isn't there at 27 I actually wouldn't mind trading out of the 1st round and bolstering some draft picks for later.
Taylor Mays is pretty much Roy Williams. I'd rather not.

I'd much rather take an OL, regardless of who is available pretty much.

Thoughts on trading up to get Dez?

Personally, I like it as I've never been a fan of RW/Crayton, and this move could certainly squeeze one of em (Crayton most likely) down the depth chart. A bit of a risk, but I'm not surprised. Jerry loves gambling on whackjobs ldo. If it works out, it's gonna be one sick receiving corps.

This season, not likely. Jerry has already said publicly that he's committed to him for this season. Although I'm starting to get the feeling that if he doesn't perform this year, they might start exploring other options with RW (or at least they should imo)

I'm so pumped about this offense. Has to be the second best in the NFC.

Isn't the O-Line sort of suspect?

One of my friends, who is a Cowboys fan, called Doug Free a "superb pass-blocking tackle".

Do you guys agree/disagree?

No......all cowboy fans are the same. They think every player they get is pro bowl caliber

It's too early for "superb" IMO. Can he get there, maybe... but not yet.

The only people who know anything about how Doug Free plays at left tackle are the coaching staff & his teammates. Ware didn't sound to excited about him and suggested they needed to resign Flozell. It's a concern but if the guy can reasonably play the position then so be it, even if he plays another year you're in the same boat next year. Would like to see a vet back him up though, since he's a fairly unproven commodity, but with free and a couple rookie Ts you have to put some youth on the team and you've only got so many roster spots.

They've whiffed on so many draft picks on the OL that most of the current OL players came from free agency, you can't keep that up forever especially once the cap comes back. So I say make the best of it, if he struggles we have good RBs and TEs to block. They need to start making do with what Houck can whip up.

Talk about revisionist history... that's not even close to how he was received. Carter was a mediocre, inaccurate college QB that was expected to go for a mid-to-late round pick and Dallas reached for him in the 2nd, which went over about as well as the Ted Ginn pick a couple of years back. The fan base and media jumped all over it - I'm not a huge Pat Kirwan fan but be summed it up pretty well after the draft:

Quote:
No one I know had him ranked as a second-round pick. He has had controversy off the field. His football intelligence has been questioned and most people thought he needed to go back to school.
He might even be the worst possible example you could use to make your point. The Carter pick was met with more "WTF" by pretty much everyone, except apparently the Cowboy fans you hang around. If I were you I'd bring up someone like Joey Galloway for two 1sts lol or Shante Carver, people actually expected them to be good.

Besides that, everyone knows Cowboy fans tend to be haters. Name one person in the organization other than DeMarcus Ware and the punter, and I'll find you fans wanting the guy traded/cut/replaced. This includes Romo, Barber, Jerry Jones, and any member of the coaching staff. So really, I think your generalization sucks pretty badly.

Case in point, and getting back on topic, Doug Free. There's a ton of concern about the guy being able to handle it as he's completely unproven on the left side, and the two players slated to back him up are rookies (well one was a rookie on IR last year). A lot of people HOPE Free does well but I haven't seen all that much confidence in him, in fact a lot of people in the Dallas forums are asking about trying to resign Flozell and were talking about trading for Jared Gaither pre-draft.

Anyway he's supposed to be a LT, and he did a very good job at RT last year. That's all anyone really knows right now.

Doug Free has all of the physical tools to be a....slightly above average left tackle. Maybe. He has excellent feet, he's smart, he has good technique. He just isn't overwhelmingly strong.

I think we'll be okay with Free. I think we'll be COMPLETELY ****ed if he goes down.

Dude, who the hell do you hang around? I've never heard a single person from Dallas ever claim Quincy was worth anything. We thought he was a horrible draft pick, and horrible when he was playing. He's probably one of the least popular Cowboys of all time. He was/is a laughing stock around the metroplex. The only person who ever thought Quincy was one of the best was Jerry, and absolutely nobody who follows the Cowboys listens to a single word Jerry says when it comes to team personnel.

He's supposedly faster and more agile, but not as strong. But compared to Flozell who doesn't fit that description? I'm nervous but okay about rolling the dice on him. Worst-case long-term Free can replace Columbo at RT.

It would suck if he turns out to be a scrub at LT, but it would suck more if he left after this season and becomes a solid starter elsewhere. The guy was drafted to develop into a starting LT. He's had 3 years of development, he played very well on the other side, he's young and in a contract year, Flozell's old... of course if Adams went down last year and Free came in and did great at LT instead of RT, we'd all feel better, but it is what it is. If you're going to develop young talent at some point you have to give them a chance, otherwise what's the point?

My bigger concern is depth. The starting O-line I can live with as is, but they can't afford a single guy to go down. At least when Adams was on the roster you had Free backing up both tackle positions, now its:

Robert Brewster (now being developed as a LT, not a guard as thought)
Pat McQuistan
Sam Young

Brewster and Young haven't had their first camp yet, and McQ sucks every time I've seen him. And it's even worse at guard and center. The team was insanely healthy last season but I wouldn't bank on that again.

We need to get a WR or two traded ASAP. Nick Eatman was saying that Holley looks like he did some work in the off-season and was one of the better guys at practice yesterday. And then there's:

Miles Austin
Dez Bryant
Roy Williams
Patrick Crayton
Kevin Ogletree
Sam Hurd

All I know is RW/Crayton/Hurd better look great this camp, because there are a lot of good young prospects for the 4 and 5 spot you'd think. Assuming Austin/Bryant/RW11, there are 2 bottom spots between Ogletree, Holley, Manny Johnson, and any UFAs that show something. Maybe 3 spots if they like the guys and can go with 6 WRs, which depends on whether we they can go with 4 corners and/or 1 kicker, etc.

I like Hurd, and Crayton is the most ****-on player, and they've produced when given the opportunity. I predict Hurd winds up on a Miami-type offense and has a 1,000-yard season before long. But they'll need contracts and Crayton's getting up there.

I want to keep Hurd for special teams.

I'd think the 5 receivers would be:

Dez
Miles
RW11
Hurd
Ogletree

Don't forget that we have Alan Ball at starting safety, with Mike Hamlin/AoA backing him up. That's another enormous concern.

Haven't forgotten at all, and then there's Watkins and some dude Barry Church (one of the few UFAs that did well). I'm okay with the depth but good enough to start is the question.

Two things going for Ball. One the rest of the secondary around him is solid, actually the rest of the defense really. Second you've actually seen the guy start at the position he's expected to play, unlike Free. He was reasonably okay, if unspectacular & that was his first year at safety.

Working against him, he saves a roster spot if he's a backup since he's the 3rd safety & 4th corner. That's a pretty big plus to me.

But you can't bring in a vet unless you need him as a starter, for example Sharper. For sure you're going to have Ball, Sensabaugh, and AoA on the roster this year. Adding to that pretty much equals cutting Mike Hamlin and/or Watkins, or keeping one and eating up a roster spot they have better uses for. Watkins I know is probably done, but there's always the chance he finally sows up and he has value on special teams.

I'd just wait it out and see what these guys look like in the OTAs. Ideally Hamlin wins it, that would work out the best. There will still be guys out there you can trade for if it comes down to it. Anyone need an inside LB? WR? A starting RB? It's not like we don't have expendable starters and backups at some positions if we need to fill a big hole.

Yeah. Jason Williams didn't impress at all last year though. I really thought he would take over for Brady next year when he was drafted, but that's definitely behind schedule at the moment.

Obviously Carpenter is going to be released or traded though.
