Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

Cobb’s a nice add (sorry Hurns), but still need help. Hopefully Wilson’s shoulder is good would like to finally see him.

Can’t say I’m excited about anything in FA so far but they aren’t doing anything very stupid either. All the guys due extensions on the team now are better than what’s in free agency, rather put money there too.

DLaw - if he’s really holding firm for a $25m/year deal, I’m a no. He’s an excellent player and a huge asset but I don’t see him as a true mega-elite consistent legend in the making type, and I think he’a a mildly higher risk. $20m yr or a hair more over 5-6 with maybe half gtd is very fair value even after factoring cap increases. Keep the tag, consider a trade if absolutely necessary. He’s almost impossible to replace but needs a minor surgery too. Wonder how this post will hold up a few years from now

Patriots would trade D law I feel like. Not saying his future production will be bad but probably not worth locking up ALLLL the salary cap dollars.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

With Lawrence I see a player that always plays well and gets pressure but can go long stretches without those massive impact plays you need. More so considering he lines up against right tackles instead of LTs. To give any player unprecedented NFL money for their position I’m looking for somebody squeaky clean that’s on a HOF trajectory. Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware types too. Zach Martin a good recent example.

That said, $20m+ year is the market now, I get that. Pass rushers are critical positions (though usually it’s the RDE as the marquee, but minor detail), I get that also but then, QBs are critical positions that cost a ton and we have one of those. They’ve also got a costly WR and CB to extend. And an all-world running back they’d probably like to. And linebackers. Not to mention premier contracts at LT, C and esp RG.

Given the build of the team and situation, does it really make sense to have 1/8th of the cap dedicated to Lawrence? I can’t say no for sure but I have some serious doubts. The NFL market has gone way up for edge rushers even after accounting for salary cap increases, and of course this guy could set the market again.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

Robert Quinn would be a nice get but that’s got to be a day 3 pick in trade. They need a credible RDE no matter what, since Taco looks to be a bust and Armstrong just doesn’t look to be the answer either. Hyder might help, or not.

Def time to get some developmental DE guys this draft. Don’t think they had a DE on practice squad even. This would be the year to hit on one

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

So 6 signed outside free agents, 4 with legit & respectable starting experience + 2 DL rotation guys. All except Witten are under 30, all on one-year rentals. Allen Hurns and Sean Lee opting to return on discount 1 year deal.

Meanwhile, at least so far, zero long-term extensions given to any of the key/core team veterans + no extension for Garrett. Of course this first case is very likely to change before long but I’m wondering how committed they actually are to extensions in each case for Dak, Zeke, Cooper, Jaylon, DLaw & Byron. Awuzie, Lewis and Woods are eligible the following year also...

With them able to use both the franchise tag and transition tag next year, and Zeke optionable next year, I’m not sure any of those guys are really assured this offseason. I’m sure they get at least 3 done but which? If say DLaw gets done and Cooper and Jaylon are ready to ink a fair deal now, and Dak wants $30m and Byron’s agent wants to f around too they could get stuck waiting and eating risk. By my count there isn’t enough room for all left this season even after DLaw signs and restructures.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

It depends on what their demands are, certainly all 5 are guys you want but if you’re going to extend anybody after year 3 you ought to get at least a little something for the extra risk and cost.

Offhand Zeke would be my least priority right now for sure with two years left & because of the nature of RBs. Jaylon Smith should actually be a restricted free agent next year instead of a UFA—I think—so he’d have to be pretty eager for a raise to extend now.

Cooper was solid and shouldn’t have any problem unless he foolishly wants to reset the WR market. Same with Lawrence too really, although $20m/year would be pretty close and extremely fair. If they just can’t get him down then he ought to play on the tag or get traded - I like him but you need to draw the line somewhere sensible.

Can Fleming’s extension suggests Collins won’t be extended unless he throws them a deal.

Which leaves Dak. I def expect they’ll throw sick money at him but if the deal doesn’t make sense they basically have to save the tag for him next year. But who really knows what any of these guys are willing to sign for or how impatient they are. Are any so good they justify GOAT deals for their position? No, but they can probably get in FA next year if unsigned.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

Seems like a FAIR deal for DLaw. Gotta find value at other spots now.

Paying Dak is going to be the most scary number when you figure a top 15 QB in the world still deserves $150+ million. Say keep Dak somehow, dump Zeke along the way and try and build a SB Broncos/Seahawks D somehow, someway. Got the LBs, one DE, one CB- but need more talent in some other spots.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

It depends on the structure, which sounds like $25m signing bonus and maybe 1st 2-3 yrs effectively gtd, but $21m/yr avg was what I considered full price. Either way it’s reportedly done and expect you’ll be seeing that year one restructure pretty soon.

As to Dak, it’s just always hard to stomach a massive modern QB contract when your guy isn’t one of the top 5, that’s all it is. He’s enough to win with and has stayed healthy. And what else can Dallas realistically do anyway? Even if you can find a new guy you’ll probably need a new LT and ten other things in the meantime.

They’re looking at a lot of LBs in the draft, which is good. Wouldn’t mind an option B in a couple of years

Probably like a 2nd and a 4th, maybe slightly more.

Would be real painful wandering in the wilderness with the Drew Hensons, Chad Hutchinsons, Quincy Carters of the world. Could whiff on 2-4 QBs before finding the next guy and no promise even that guy is head and shoulders better than Dak.

It would be cool if we had Aaron Rodgers or Mahomes, I agree.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

FWIW I’d trade the late 2nd for Rosen, and I wouldn’t care who the starter is or what their contract status was either. It’s absurdly improbable ofc but if somehow his value dropped anywhere near that I’d at least chat them up. Hard to find a comparable ceiling prospect at 58 at any position.

I’m still pretty concerned about the QB depth in general though, but it’s tough to evaluate with a starter who doesn’t come off the field. Hoping to see something from those two this offseason.

But back to Dak, given the circumstances I think extending him at market is just how it has to be. They don’t have to ink an unreasonable All-World deal like you might with the top-tier guys, I mean they need a QB but he’s not good enough to justify Matt Ryan money. Faced with a low salary contract year and likely tag or tag/trade the next he has plenty of incentive to secure a deal now. $125/5 years with 85 gtd is not unfair but we’ll see. For all their talk they tend to reach too deep overvaluing their own sometimes when they don’t have too.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

So essentially DLaw is gtd for 3 seasons, and if in a bind they can get out for $10m after that, or $5m the year after that. This year’s cap hit is light-ish. Structure-wise it’s about the best they could have realistically done.

The seem to have a reasonably credible DLine but could use that impact DT. They’re pretty set at end but would have been nice for Taco to have turned out (wonder what team he winds up with this season).

I wonder if they’re eyeballing Crawford’s contract right now. He has position flex and seems pretty likely to return but if they wanted to save $6m immediately that could be a possibility. They shouldn’t need him at end anymore, and the bar fight thing has me wondering. Woods and Collins is really thin without him but a trade for Crawford seems like it could go down if they acquire a cut or draft a guy.

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

So fair to say they have decent options across the DL right now. Hill gets Collins’ spot next year if not right away. All kinds of LDE options to back up DLaw but they gotta find a permanent solution on the right side after this year. Crawford and his contract at risk, Taco, Armstrong...lots of competition all around now.

The OG/OC pick - some will hate this position pick given depth, but imo late 3rd snag the value. I’m actually a little familiar with him and go to a couple PSU games each year. Someone else can evaluate but I can say he’s got an NFL size body today, none of this “once we put 25 lbs on him” nonsense with McGovern. There has also been talk that Conner Williams may be headed to RT...keep in mind La’el Collins is a $10m (!) cap charge this season and they can save $8.5m immediately if they can replace him this season. Which I think they can tbh. Collins is okay but yeah give me the 8.5m instead.

Love to see the 2x RBs and a couple DBs. Missing a TE prospect but with Witten retuning they bought an extra season. No WR or LB surprisingly but guess you can’t get everything

Next year's draft super talented on O. Maybe they just figure they'll wait.

I thought it was a pretty sound draft. Our D is for sure top 5, right?

Re: Dallas Cowboys 2016: Hey, NFL! Get Ready to Suck Some Dak

I’m rating the draft a “?” and hoping for the best. No clue. Definitely not adding any points vs the rest of the league when the top pick was #58. The other NFCE teams in particular had lots of capital, with like 6 1sts, NYG and WAS both taking QBs etc. We’ll see how it actually plays out (though you sort of have to factor in Amari Cooper).

But even ignoring the draft completely they could very well be a top 5 defensive unit as is. All the key talent is returning, there’s a credible vet at RDE, good defensive coaches. An offense that should be respectable. Then again they could **** the bed completely and fall out of the top half. The Rams game demonstrated that they still had a lot to work to do before we start throwing around Doomsday 2 or whatever.

...but to be clear I think they’re probably a 10+ win team if they don’t lose Dak or a one of the few critical position players they don’t have depth for. They have everything they need today or n the roster, on both sides the of the ball. And I would not be surprised if the offense became better than the defense at this point either - if the WR group pans out as I hope. If Gallup and Cobb work out, and Cooper stays hot, yikes.

A month later I still see them as a marginally improved team among many, many marginally improved teams. Only they were an above-average team to begin with so not a bad place to be.

I’m a little surprised they’ve been this quiet wrt free agency but we’ll see what happens during cuts. We knew they wouldn’t go nuts but I figured they’d squeeze in a little more spending this year. I thought they’d at least have McCoy visit unless he’s beyond $8m a year or something.
