to use a quote from varsity blues (which you should never do), jason garrett has to be the dumbest smart "kid" i know. norm hitzges was on this 2 weeks ago after the washington game. his use of clock management skills is deplorable.

didn't see this get any coverage in this thread; although, i only skimmed back 20 posts or so. bob sturm had an interesting look at fiammetta's impact on the cowboys' offense. if you didn't hear it yet, here is the audio: bob sturm's fiammetta breakdown segment on the ticket.

edit: oh yeah, the 5 exclamation points is just excessive, just one would do.

It's not just Dez. I know Miles is bad about it too.

The only thing I can figure is that since WR's aren't wearing thigh pads they are buying really small pants so they can fit tighter and they don't come up high enough. But you are right, every single time Dez gets tackled you see his ass. Same with Miles.

Not using our timeouts and settling for a 48 yard FG was so bad. Guess the rationale behind "icing our kicker" was to give Bailey a practice kick? Idk but it definitely seemed horrific.

Run the damn ball Garrett.

did Garrett do any press conferences or anything where he addressed his icing his own kicker strat?

Yeah he said the play clock was running down to around 6 and the cowboys were not fully set so he "banged" a timeout. lol

i just saw the highlight show on nfl network with deion, irvin, and mariucci, whatever they call it, and i couldn't help but laugh at all of the possible excuses they were making for garrett. "could of been that he was worried about a sack taking them out of field goal range... a possible interception... maybe they didn't have any faith in the ground game, demarco murray only had 38 yards on the ground... just keep it simple and play it safe."

WHAT ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY GARRETT JUST DIDN'T THINK? any chance of that? literally, the coaches are sitting on the sidelines and conferring while the clock is running and someone goes ****! 19 seconds! get the field goal team out there GO! GO! GO! GO! GO! because as poor as they have been with clock management this season there's no way they should be given the benefit of the doubt. i wonder if it took them 17 seconds to realize they even had timeouts.

ftr, garrett's post game comments were, "one of my assistant coaches (chris boniol) came to me and said the play clock was at 6, we didn't have everybody set, and we didn't want to have bailey have to rush his kick." *cough* *bull-S* *cough*

Garrett reasoning:

Quote:
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It's the question that will be debated over the next several days following Sunday's 19-13 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals:

Why did the Cowboys not call timeout immediately after Dez Bryant's 15-yard catch at the Arizona 31-yard line with the game tied at 13-13 and about 20 seconds left in regulation?

Instead of saving clock and possibly running one more play to inch closer for the winning field goal, head coach Jason Garrett elected for the offense to spike the ball with seven seconds remaining and give rookie kicker Dan Bailey a 49-yard try.

"You see so many situations where you have negative plays in those situations," Garrett said. "We felt like were in his range to give him a chance to kick the game winner."

With the play clock running down, though, the Cowboys called timeout just before Bailey successfully made the kick. His second attempt fell just short, forcing overtime, where the Cardinals won on a 52-yard catch and run.

"We just felt like we wanted to have a clean operation," Garrett said when asked about the timeout on the first (unofficial) kick.

Said Bailey, who went 2-for-4 for the game and saw his 26 consecutive field goal streak end Sunday: "I heard the whistles blowing but I knew time was running down. It's a situation we actually practice quite a bit. But things happen and it's my job to make the kick no matter what happens."

garrett should work as the white house press secretary or some other corporate position where the duties include deflecting responsibility and talking in circles to try and make people forget nothing was accomplished.

idk how im gonna get over this, actually

just thinking about it infuriates me because i cant get it in my head on what planet that was anything close to the right decision

and it very well could cost them a playoff spot

all the other WC contention teams lost today (ATL, DET, NYG, CHI). huge game, coulda rode the 5 gm winning streak to gm vs NYG and coulda had the division locked up

all of a sudden it seems like they went from a safe bet to on the outside looking in

Win or lose it doesn't change much, the division winner is still most likely going to be decided by the NYG-DAL games. They need to pick it up though the o-line looked terrible, and this D is really weak in the 4th qtr for some reason, I don't know what thats all about

It's the same old story with our defense. We don't cause turnovers in our secondary. We never have. I have no idea why. I thought it was Wade's system, but it's clearly not. But it's been the same story for several years now. When the game is on the line and pressure is high, our offense makes mistakes and other offenses become perfect well oiled machines that never even come close to mistakes.

This. With the Giants losing yesterday, we're still in a position where we most likely just have to split with them to win the division. If we can't manage a split we don't deserve to make the playoffs anyway.

Realistically, the best I'm hoping for this year is for us to hold on for the division title and then manage to win the one home playoff game. I guess if we go into the playoffs healthy and with some kind of momentum we might go somewhere, but I'll be a little shocked if that's the case.

Still a few upgrades away. They're about as healthy as any team in the league is right now and it's been all they can do just to get to 7-5. It's not bad luck or the ball bouncing the other way it's just where they're at.

If nothing else at least they're better than they were last year, and doing it with a ton of young guys who are likely to improve instead of a bunch of expensive & underperforming old vets. Find a nice corner and center in the draft, get a good safety somewhere, let Nagy come back, get ILB Carter and the o-line a good solid offseason of work...

Way better then going into a year trying to figure out what to do with guys like Gurode, Roy W, Barber III, Colombo, Olshansky and all those types. Newman, Brooking, probably B. James and 1 safety will be all gone, maybe even Spencer. If JJ can make some smart decisions (or just avoid really bad ones) I think they'll be okay. For right now it's a lot to ask of a 6-10 team with a new coaching regime and no offseason to go 13-3 or whatever and dominate everyone.

But hey, season isn't over yet. Giants come to Dallas this weekend and that's all I'm seeing. And I don't care how close the GB game was, NY's been inconsistent all season vs good, bad and average teams.

A win this particular weekend essentially wins Dallas the division and might even put NY out of reasonable reach for a wild card spot. Probably 50/50 chance both teams show up and it's a good tough game, hopefully we come out with a W. Been waiting on this game for a while and it's almost here.

you know a lot more about the cowboys and probably just professional football in general than me, but this is a really ignorant statement in my view. a) because the cowboys "could have" won the east without even beating the giants, had they won yesterday, and all of the other cards fell into place; now that's gone. b) there's still this little matter of playoff seeding. who knows where an 8-4 cowboys team could have landed, for all we know they could of landed the 2 seed in the nfc. so, i disagree that it doesn't change much. if nothing else, it changes my confidence level in this team that the head coaching staff has enough common sense to cross the street safely, and that this team is good enough to beat the teams they should; it really brings into question whether the last two wins vs washington and miami were produced from the "good teams find a way to win these type of games" mantra, or if they were just getting lucky.

It probably sounded ignorant because you took what I posted to mean "it doesn't matter" when what I said was "it doesn't change much." And it didn't, they're in almost exactly the same spot as they were last week, not only against the Giants but again every other NFC team in contention for a wild card. They all lost, we're still at least tied in W/L, and we still win/lose tiebreaker to the same teams we would have last week.

WRT seed Dallas doesn't move higher or lower as a result. They weren't catching GB or SF so keep dreaming for a top seed. They'd have been a game behind NO for the #3 seed but that was already a long shot considering how it's going and their respective schedules. And btw he difference between #3 and #4 is nothing, for all purposes winning the division means they host one Wild Card team at home and have to win on the road.

As far as your confidence in them I don't know why that changes either, their shortcomings have been out there in full view all season. Did you see them as an elite NFC powerhouse or something? They aren't. They just have a few less problems than some other teams. How many teams in the conference do you think they're significantly better than? 5 or maybe 6?

And btw I'm not really going to question the Miami and Was wins or chalk them up as luck/variance etc, because I'm not giving partial credit on the Jets/Det/NE losses or any other close game they've had either. People who do that too much. Parcells said it best, you are what your record says you are. Right now their record is 7-5 with a lot of very close games against all types of teams. No more or less.

well, even though we didnt techincally "lose out" on the WC since everybody lost, it would have been HUGE to gain a game on everyone.

a 8-4 team probably needed to go 2-2 to win a WC card spot. now maybe 2-2 could get a WC.

also, what do you guys think happened to Bailey on his 2nd kick? did he expect ARI to ice him too so he didnt take it seriously? did he just shank it? the first kick was good by 15 feet at least and the 2nd one was short.

to me on the reply it didnt look like he drove it and maybe tried to aim it too much, just wondering what you guys thought.

i really hope this doesnt shake him because hes been so solid all season.

Also, GREAT news

Cowboys FB Tony Fiammetta has been cleared to return from his undisclosed illness.
It's terrific news for DeMarco Murray, whose production has slowed considerably since Fiammetta went out of the lineup in Week 10. Fiammetta will practice Wednesday and resume playing on Sunday Night Football against the Giants.

Honestly was only expecting 8-8 this season and mock drafting it up at this point so winning the division at 10-6 would be A+. We're a slight favorite in our biggest game of the season.

Get em
