The fact that he's an unknown works both against us and for us. Lastly, we must also consider the strategy of deceiving opposing teams. If I was a head coach I'd use every single opportunity to misinform opponents. Creating false QB controversies is a great way to do that. Maybe Pettine always knew he'd start Hoyer? Maybe it's the opposite and he'll pull Hoyer after starting him for one series no matter what? Ultimately, I now trust the Browns coaching staff and front office enough to stand behind any decision they make.
You realize how many absolute trash QBs "looked NFL capable" by those standards? How many crap Browns QBs have looked great for a game where they come in, then come back to earth? I bet even Weeden met that standard. Not saying Manziel will be that bad, he might even be good, but it's a lot to ask of him and I still don't think his ceiling is that much higher than Hoyer's. Hoyer's experience against NFL teams has to be worth quite a lot and unless you are giving up on a playoff run, I see no reason to change it up.
Sure, getting other teams having to prepare for multiple things is good. Having Johnny play a drive might be a good thing, and certainly matchups might be where it's better to put him in. Hoyer basically isn't getting that big contract extension now, and JFF isn't going anywhere, so why rush it?
