Minnesota, not wanting to surrender the mantle, gave up a 3-2 lead in the top of the 9th to lose 4-3 and remain tied with us for the worst record in baseball. Is there a can't-miss #1 pick this year? Does the MLB draft work the same way other pro sports do? Does it even matter?

we have either the 5th or 6th pick for the draft this year. I think we have three of the top 67 or something like that. No sure things in this draft like a strasburg or harper. Looks like we'll have a top three or four pick next year if things keep going like they currently are this season.

draft matters a lot. we need a big time talent upgrade, which the new regime has already somewhat tried to address with the trade for Rizzo and signing some Cuban players.

Big thing now is just to be patient.

fangraphs article today talking about cubs trade possibilities. Theo claims everyone but shark is available. I'm starting to warm to the idea of shipping Castro for a monster haul

Theo's already downplaying any Castro trade talk:
http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story...starlin-castro

I'm not in love with Castro or anything, but I don't see what good it does to trade him unless someone would drastically overpay. At some point we need actual major league players, not just prospects, and Castro is already a proven MLB all-star who's young, cheap, and under control for several more years, which is everything you'd hope those prospects would turn into (though they usually won't).

everybody's got a price tho. we're at least two seasons away, if someone offers two or three high ceiling guys who are closeish I don't think Theo slams the phone down or anything

Cubs fans I talk with are into trading Castro, is this not the general feeling? Obv you all want Soriano to f off too?

if soriano can convince some al team to have him dh, it would be awesome. castro better not ****ing go anywhere; if he does we better get a king's ransom.

how the **** do you walk a big slow guy hitting .154 for the season with the bases loaded? seriously?

and then they don't turn 2 when the next guy hits a grounder.

castro's ceiling is too high and he's too young imo. and you'll never get enough in return. it's not like the reds are going to offer votto and chapman.

castro projects to peak when the cubs need him most in a year or two.

exactly.

was thinking about this the other day, baseball really does work on a different timeline, from a team, personal and "gameplay" perspective. it's why moving dempster makes sense, garza not so much (35 vs 28 years-old).

we're really looking at contending in 2014 and hopefully favorite status in 2015. at which point almora will be a 21 year-old phenom.
(provided boras doesn't send him to college, ugh)

Cubs 12 straight loss in a 1 run game is a new franchise record.

once it's time to win, i think we're going to need to find a free agent closer. I just hope they bring up more than Rizzo in the next couple months. I just want to see what Jackson and even Vitters can do.

I hope they're going to go after a big name SP this offseason. Hamels and Greinke are the two big names. Next two I'd prob like are Edwin Jackson and McCarthy. I'd really like Hamels to give us a big time LH to go with Garza and Jeff S.

man they need to have soriano assassinated. i hope they don't wait till 2014 to spend money b/c of him. i'd love to see them grab one of those guys you mentioned long term since the market doesn't look so hot the following year. here's a list of the 2014 free agent starting pitchers:

With Dempster, Byrd and Zambrano off the books after this year, there's no reason they can't spend money this offseason. The only money on the hook right now for 13 are:

Soriano - 18 mil
marmol - 9.8 mil (jesus)
dejesus - 4.25 mil
maholm - 500k to buy out his team option which if they sign a big pitcher, they'll prob want to do.

That's it. Obv, they have to pay Garza around 10 mil if they keep him. And then you have to factor in all the guys like Castro, Barney, Russell, Jeff S., etc that haven't hit free agency yet but there's not any major money there.

They have a lot of room to add payroll next season.

I'll also add that the only money tied up for '14 is another 18 mil to Soriano. One bad contract isn't justification for not having money to spend. Damn near every major market team has a bad contract on their books, if not multiple bad contracts.

i didn't think i'd end up hating the marmol contract as much as the soriano contract

Soriano contract really hasn't been that bad. Paid 74m through 2011, worth 67.5m.
