National League or not, it's pretty weird that Smoltz and Penny could be so ineffective for the Sox and then pitch great as soon as they leave. There was talk that Smoltz was tipping his pitches and the STL pitching coach picked up on it right away. Didn't hear anything similar with Penny but the guy pitched consistently at 95 mph with few walks and could never get beyond 5 innings.

In the past, there have been "tipping pitches" issue rumors with other Sox pitchers as well. Now with Beckett having several bad outing in a row giving up lots of long balls, I wonder if there is a problem with the coach. By all accounts he's supposed to be very good, but it makes me wonder.

I only saw about two innings of this game, and we flew out to the warning track about 37 times in that span.

Whether by design or luck, the Red Sox seem to have nearly set up their pitching rotation for the playoffs. Assuming every pitcher in the rotation takes their turn for the remainder of the season, Lester and Becket will be scheduled to pitch back to back on the final weekend of the season (Saturday 10/3 and Sunday 10/4).

Obviously, they won't be pitching those games unless a playoff berth is at stake. They'll get some extra rest or the rotation will be shifted a bit during September so that they won't have "too much rest" prior to game 1 of the ALDS.

It'll be Lester in game 1, Beckett in game 2, and apparently Buchholz in game 3. Though, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wakefield made the #3 starter.

I haven't had a chance to listen to or watch any of the times Wagner has pitched so far. Has he been as good as his numbers?

I haven't seen him pitch yet (God, I've barely seen any of this season, and I'm paying $1M/mo for the MLB package), but when you look at his numbers since coming over:

3 appearances
3 IP
0 R
1 H
7 K
1 BB

...how could someone not look as good as those numbers? He'd have to routinely give up 500' foul balls or something, and even then, we'd be happy.

as of now, are they most likely gonna be playing the angels in anaheim ( that how it works)? ill just be getting back from commerce in late sept. and seems like im gonna have to go right back out if sox play angels in the first round.

Yeah, that's true. Man, their bullpen is so strong. If/when Beckett gets over this rough patch, things could be a lot worse.
