Heh, I just saw a crawl on the bottom of the local channel that said a local kid got picked in the third round of the draft by the Boston Red Sox.
I don't understand how a #3 can command a much bigger bonus than a #1 or #2.
Also, I'm reading Sparky Lyle's "The Bronx Zoo" right now, and he says that he got no bonus when he signed (then later learned that he could have got at least ten dimes, if he had only asked for it). Lyle said the size of your bonus determined your worth to the club. If they had $80k invested in you, they felt the need to nurture you and get their money's worth. If they had $0 invested in you, they didn't give a damn about you.
(BTW, that book is about the '78 season. I'm just now up to September, when the Yanks came to Fenway and clobbered Boston for four straight games, to catch them in the standings and rip their hearts out. Lyle says the only reason the Sox folded that year was injuries. "Yaz has a bad back, Fisk has cracked ribs, Hobson has got arm troubles, Evans got beaned last week, he's still dizzy," etc. Then again, the only reason the Sox had such a big lead that year was all the injuries the Yankees suffered--Hunter, Rivers, Randolph, and Dent all missed significant amounts of time, and Munson's knees/legs were in terrible shape. They're just rolling now in September, and I'm not looking forward to reading about the one-game play-off.)
