My amateur analysis:
Adrian Gonzalez certainly earned his contract.
I think the infield as a whole performed well.

I was ok with the catching tandem of Tek and Salt. Lavarnway is certainly something to look forward too.

Jacoby Ellsbury had a stellar year (I say trade him now at his peak)

Any shining stars in the rotation besides Alfredo Aceves?
Do we bring back Papelbon who's looking for a payday?
Anyone remember Bobby Jenks?
Who's more likely to start a game next season Junichi Tazawa or Daisuke Matsuzaka?

is that a joke

probably not, ellsburys power #s came out of nowhere, who's to say he'll ever have a year close to the year he just had? if you can get a nice package for him why is it completely ridiculous to consider trading him?

adrian gonzalez/ellsbury are the clear highlights of the 2011 red sox imo- both young and had just ridiculous years- look real nice going forward

there are some silver linings too- it took a ridiculous september collapse to keep them from the postseason despite major injuries to like 15 of their best players, an atrocious year from crawford (shud improve), and a lack of production from RF/C (shud improve)

you'd have to get a pretty insane package in return to even consider trading ellsbury given how little he'll cost relative to his market value in arbitration the next two seasons

i remember being such an advocate for trading ellsbury in '07, and holding onto crisp. lol me

honestly im not that worried about losing theo if it happens

i dont know if theres any reason to think hes better than any of the last handful of nerd GM hires (anthropolous, daniels, friedman) . im sure his replacement would be fine. its not like theyd hire omar minaya

My general feelings:

Red Sox collapse - blech, but whatever, next year
Tito leaves - that really sucks a lot, wtf is going on here
Theo leaving - Jesus wtf the plane is flying into the mountain ABORT ABORT ABORT

With that said, I truly have zero clue how replaceable Theo is. My sense is "not very" from a baseball businessman standpoint. I also have the sense that he's a jerkoff and that his approach to running the Red Sox played a role in the discord. Business is business, but people will always be people and they act irrationally much of the time. How you handle conflict is enormously important. I also have no idea how important atmosphere is to a baseball team's success, but I imagine it's at least as important as in any business. If people feel that the guy in charge doesn't care about them things will eventually get rough.

Seems as if there is a lot of discontent within the organization which is a bit worrying. Gonna be an interesting offseason for sure.

I always feel fine blaming luchino about everything, cuz he's a massive cockknuckle

i would love it if theo stays on....if he leaves and the cubs ship us back a player for letting him go (apparently JWH will just let theo go cuz he loves him, but who knows)...i mean sean marshall anyone?

even if he leaves, life goes on....the player development machine he built is in place, and while i dont personally blame him 100% for FA signings sucking (variance is a bitch) the simple fact is, they have generally been awful results wise.

JD Drew has been pretty good and criminally underrated and AGonz has been as advertised so far (sort of an FA deal). But yeah.

ya drew was not a failure....dice/SS's/carl and lolackey are the bad ones....but carl aint done and dice everyone thought was a good idea...so anyways i love theo but if he wants out due to LL and chi will give us somebody for him, i mean i think there are more theos out there.

Pretty absurd that igawa > matsuzaka. But Bos could be at fault for how they handled dicek.

for sure. should be an interesting offseason, might be some nasty goodbyes(ortiz, paps) and some nice cordial ones (tek, wake)

Seems crazy that they don't work something out for papelbon. He had an insanely good year sans his last appearance. But I guess he is a huge douchebag.

i don't quite get that. why not cut a partial tear surgically? wouldn't the benefits be less scar tissue, etc.?

Trauma and recovery time is the same in both cases; replacement ligament is never as good as the original, etc.

Every pitcher has a partially torn UCL. The only difference is the severity. Without that info it's impossible to pass judgment.

Another productive day this week at Fenway. Tom, Larry and I were briefed by Theo and Ben on the managerial search. Due diligence this week.

Calls and maybe interviews next week. Excited to once again bring in smart, creative, hands-on leadership. We have the right people looking.
Should we read much into this re Theo?
