Re: Boston Celtics

I hope I'm wrong, but after today's dismantling, I don't see us winning more than 6 playoff games.

Re: Boston Celtics

Depends which Boston team shows up:

Veteran Boston, the team with tons of experience and a championship,

OR

Old-man Boston, the team with too much mileage who punted the last 19 games.

It would be nice if Doc would start running the team in a non-stupid way though. Having Davis as the sole big on the floor is so, so bad (Green does not count). If I were Ainge, I'd be looking to dump Krstic and Green before next season.

Also, from a different message board:

I think it is fair to say that the ultimate purpose of the trade was to solve what had been the C's "not Pierce" problem. As previously noted, prior to the trade the Overall Rating of Pierce on was 12.47 and off -5.93. This is what needed to be shored up to improve the C's playoff chances and was worth the risk of swapping a then injured Perkins for Krstic. (And that part of the trade has gone more or less OK as Krstic has played just fine as his replacement.)

The effect on Pierce's on off Overall Ratings? Now they stand at 11.08 and -7.47. So, no improvement, but deterioration. Of course, there are other factors besides the lack of contribution of Jeff Green, but let's look at his Boston numbers, on/off in various contexts.

All JG minutes, On: Offensive Rating = 98.00, Off: Offensive Rating = 107.66
All non-JG minutes, On: Defensive Rating = 103.65, Off: Defensive Rating = 99.95

So, both offense and defense worse, but this includes an end of season slump, that he can only be partially responsible for, so let's look at his role in solving the "non-Pierce" problem. In particular, the offensive, defensive, and overall ratings when he is playing with Pierce and when not.

w/Pierce: Off Rtg = 100.90, Def Rtg = 103.56, Overall Rtg = -2.66

So, the observation that JG was not the best PF in the league would seem to be borne out by these numbers. His negative contributions on this margin have been incredibly large.

wo/Pierce: Off Rtg = 96.16, Def Rtg = 103.71, Overall Rtg = -7.55

Offense worse still, though no further deterioration in defense. But -7.55 is, er, not an improvement on the pre-Green "non-Pierce" Overall Rating of -5.93. I think with this evidence it is safe to say that JG has not been a solution to the "non-Pierce" SF problem. Were there better options at the trade deadline? I don't know.

Perhaps there are finer points redeeming the acquisition. Maybe there are particular, effective lineups where JG's shortcomings can be masked. But at the end of the day, I think the safe conclusion is that the Celtics' title hopes rest entirely on the fitness of the starting five, Shaq's most importantly. Full stop.
I'm throwing in the towel. Was a good season, too bad Danny ****ing Ainge decided to throw it all away by giving up Perk. ****ing *******.

Alright, game 1 we got it done. Sorta. Was much closer then it should've been, but we also got lucky, and got the benefit of reffing.

Re: Boston Celtics

Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic need to be dumped like a girl who don't put out after this season. Bench is such AIDS right now; they might ruin the season, and they look good on paper... that's the scary part. Evidently starting for the Thunder is a lot easier than coming off the bench for awesome players.

Re: Boston Celtics

so damn lucky to be 2-0 in this series. easily could be the other way. no bench play to speak of. so lucky kg bailed them out tonight. 2 big plays back to back offense then on d.

possession before i thought we basically gave the game away - great defense and no rebounding giving them 3 chances.

we're up 2-0, but barring a gruesome injury to one of the big 4, this is the worst I could feel about actually being up.

Re: Boston Celtics

Hopefully Game 3 proved that this team CAN win a championship. This doesn't mean they will, given that few other teams will give them so many good looks and utterly flop on offense, but the way they conducted themselves tonight shows that they can operate on a high level. This was the first time I've seen the starting 5 ALL firing on all cylinders since... a long time. KG, while he didn't score a bunch, was brilliant on defense.

Tonight's game means more rest for Shaq, and I don't care if they blow game 4 if they need to get ready for the series against Miami. Honestly, beating the Knicks w/o Billups and Stoudemire not near 100% doesn't prove much, but the win is beneficial.

Re: Boston Celtics

So the naysayers are already squawking: but lol the Knicks were so easy lol the Heat will kick your ass lol. I don't care how badly the Knicks played--the Celtics (most notably the starters) were playing on a completely different level from the regular season. It's not like Allen hasn't had a lot of those open shots down the stretch; it's just that he's making them now and not in a funk. It's not like Rondo wasn't capable of dropping layups and dimes like mad; it's just that he's actually doing what he's capable of.

Yeah, the Heat will be a lot harder to beat. Allen won't get as many open shots because Wade will be a major threat. Pierce already did fantastic against Melo, and he will probably do pretty decently against James. Garnett will smash the Boshtrich into another dimension. Do the Heat even have other players than that? Because I'm pretty sure if there is one team whose bench is as bad as the Celtics, it's probably the Heat. Jermaine (and Shaq, fingers crossed) is much better than any of their centers, Rondo will burn their Point Guards like they're nothing. Heat will be a tough series, but do I really have to remind critics that the C's were 3-1 against the Heat with arguably weaker lineups earlier in the season?

Re: Boston Celtics

Very excited for tomorrow. I have high hopes for this series. When even the pundits, who are generally on the Heat's sack, are split in their opinions and give Boston a good chance, I tend to think we're in good shape. The matchup I'm most worried about is Allen vs. Wade, though. I doubt we'll see Ray raining as many 3's this series, but we'll see. A lot of eyes on Rondo.

Danny Ainge did this team in. Glen Davis, Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic... These are bad players.

4th qrtr was ugly. green got torched by lebron, cant believe doc stuck with him for so long.

but the refs swallowed their whistles when boston had the ball, but not when miami did.

That's what happens when you tank against crappy teams and lose HC advantage. Danny gambled that Shaq would be back when he traded Perk. Unfortunately he was wrong, so far, and playing Krstic and BBD is killing us. Neither rebound or play D worth a crap.

Re: Boston Celtics

Regardless of what happens this year, I'd like to see a big shuffling of the Celtics next year. Get rid of Krstic, get rid of Green, get rid of Davis unless he loses 30 pounds, get rid of Doc. Bring in some fresh ideas. Honestly, I would give serious consideration to breaking up the Big 3 while they still have some trade value so Boston can start rebuilding with some young players who can actually play for 40 minutes. I'd keep Pierce (he's a Celtic for life) and Rondo (unless we can, by some miracle, sign someone like CP3), but I'd honestly put everyone else on the table.

I still hold out a slight bit of hope that Shaq's reappearance will get us back in the series, if for no other reason that maybe it means FFD will not play Center for 28 ****ing minutes. But in my heart of hearts, I know we're done.

Happy for the win but it felt like the Celts were expending 200% effort and I'm not sure they can keep that up. Also Rondo, will he be able to play?

A glimer of hope last night. This Miami Team is so young and so fast. We will need to keep up the 200% effort

Yeap. Shaq's impact, even in limited minutes, was huge. Not having Green and FFD in at the 4/5 helped immensely on the boards. Doc needs to ride KG and Pierce the rest of the series. No point in limiting their minutes really.

This. Game 4 is still a must-win, because I see almost no way they can win 3 straight with two in Miami.

+11111

--davis getting <20min and few minutes at c is a huge +
--shaq and jo at center actually gives the team a shotblocker/dec rebounding
--run offense through pierce and kg and ride them heavy minutes

that was throwback kg. hope he's got a lot left. HAVE to win tonight.

Well, I guess he ran out of steam. 3 games of shutting down Bosh and 1 really awesome performance regrettably gave way to old legs.

That was a fun if somewhat disappointing season. At the outset, I expected another title, but then injuries happened, Ainge made an abortion of a trade, and the Eastern Conference changed.

Looking to the next season, I am really torn on how much I'd want to change this team around if I were the GM. They need more options at Center. Davis needs to lose 30 pounds or get traded (FML why couldn't they trade him instead of Perk?????). Green and Krstic should not get picked up again. I think a lot of players need to be on the table. I want to see some new coaching blood, too, as Doc clearly wants to go.
