The Celtics get the Lakers' pick if it's the #2 or #3 pick. So, there's just a 2.9% chance of us landing that.

Instead, the Celtics will likely get a 2019 pick. It will be the better of the 76ers' pick or the Kings' pick (which the 76ers have the rights to and is #1 protected).

This year's Kings finished with the 6th worst record in the league, may be in decline, but have a lot of cap space for next year. The 76ers had the 5th best record and are clearly on the rise.
It wasn’t a bad trade on value. But this years draft I think is much stronger than next year even if the Kings pick conveys at a pretty high pick.

Speaking of ending on a high note: we just won an NBA basketball game with a starting lineup of Larkin, Bird, Nader, Yabusele and Baynes.

It seems Celtics fans are less interested in trading Jaylen Brown and/or Jayson Tatum along with picks to land one big stud player (Kawhi Leonard).

Can we judge how good Brown (21) or Tatum (20) can be potentially be? These two are half a decade from hitting their prime.

They're already mini studs on affordable deals while Kawhi has injury and possibly headcase concerns and is going to command a max deal.

I feel better going into the Cavaliers series than I did going in to the 76ers series.

Lebron will get his production. But, I think the Celtics can play great defense against the rest of the Cavaliers.

I expect the Celtics to be competitive.

If we go to the NBA Finals without 2 of our best 3 players that would be the most ridiculous thing ever...

No lottery pick for us.

The 76ers only get the #10 pick (Fultz/Tatum trade; 2-5 pick going to Celtics) and the Cavaliers get the #8 pick (Kyrie Irving trade).

The Sacramento Kings moved up from the #7 pick to the #2 pick. We get the Kings pick next year unless it's #1 (then we get the 76ers pick). I'm not sure if that's good to help ensure the Kings aren't the worst NBA team or bad because that pick may not be as good next year.

In a vacuum it's not amazing, but 4 of top 5 picks to the West & Cavs/76ers getting 8 & 10 & missing on the elite prospects is pretty pretty nice.

Five potential draft steals who could break out in the NBA

#1: Robert Williams | Texas A&M | C

Quote:
There's no greater collegiate casualty in the draft than Williams. While he hasn't done himself any favors with his up-and-down motor, combine no-show and the fact that he's already on his second agent, A&M also robbed him of opportunities to play to his strengths.

1. Played PF not C, with no spacing

College basketball and the NBA look like two different sports at times, and A&M was a perfect example of that with two non-floor-spacing centers in Williams and Tyler Davis playing next to each other and a prototype stretch-4 in DJ Hogg at the 3. Williams played almost exclusively power forward -- a rare position for him at the NBA level.

There's one stat in particular that tells the story of how Williams wasn't used appropriately. At 6-foot-10 with a massive catch radius, elite agility and explosive leaping ability, Williams was used in only 16 pick-and-roll possessions in 30 games, according to Synergy Sports Technology. Sixteen. That's just over one pick-and-roll possession every two games, and he rolled on only nine possessions all year. Nine rolling possessions in 30 games for the draft's best lob-catcher who finished a ridiculous 73.7 percent of his shots at the rim.

Why so few pick-and-roll opportunities? With Davis camped out in the paint and at times only one other shooter on the floor, there was no room for Williams to roll when A&M did decide to put him in ball screens. Williams didn't always screen or dive as hard as he could, but part of that is a function of him knowing it was unlikely he'd have an open lane or an accurate lob thrown his way.

The Aggies used Williams as a high-low passer or stuck him in the short corner, giving the still-raw center little opportunity to use his freakish tools. Playing him at the 4 on defense also put him out of position to protect the rim at times. Although he's the best jump-shot swatter in the draft, he didn't quite learn the ins and outs of team defense at the center spot in two years at the collegiate level.

Where does Williams see himself positionally?

"Honestly wherever I'll make money is where I see myself," Williams told ESPN during the NCAA tournament. That will certainly be at center, in the Clint Capela mold.

2. Poor guard play

"I feel like I'll do well in the NBA because you got elite passers," Williams said. "You got guys like James Harden -- great passers."

Williams didn't have that with the Aggies, as A&M's guard play was uninspiring, to put it nicely. Far too many possessions looked like this:

Eventual starting point guard TJ Starks finished the season with 72 assists and 85 turnovers, regularly breaking free of the offense to create his own. With nowhere to roll and no one to throw him lobs, Williams floated, which bled over to other aspects of his game.

"It's just all effort, man, and that's honestly what I've been trying to improve on," Williams said. "This postseason my teammates have just been telling me I've got to keep my effort up, no [slacking]. I just try to keep that up and lead them."

Over the last five games of the season -- including three in the NCAA tournament -- Williams gave scouts a glimpse of what he can be at the NBA level, as he averaged 15.2 rebounds and 4.8 blocks per 40 minutes, all while playing out of position.

How will it change in the NBA?

Situation will be key for Williams, who needs to be in a structured environment with strong vets to live up to his sky-high potential. But even outside of that, any NBA coach with a modern outlook figures to see Williams' value as a rim runner, lob catcher, switch defender, rim protector and rebounder.

It will help to feed Williams a few lob attempts per game to keep him engaged on the defensive end of the floor, where he has the potential to be elite. Williams also has quite a bit of untapped potential as a passer, which could manifest itself in short roll situations when surrounded by shooters. While not every big man projected in the lottery fits where the NBA is headed, Williams is the ideal type of modern center that shines when surrounded by shooters and quick decision makers. He is loaded with tools and natural talent, and a playoff team with a winning culture would be smart to jump into the back end of the lottery to steal the center, who is without a doubt a top-10 talent.

Is an Anthony Davis trade a real possibility?

If so, before this year's trade deadline or during the offseason?

I don't know if the Celtics are going to get their act together and make a strong run in the playoffs.

But, they've run good in the past month regarding their future draft picks.

Despite the Los Angeles Clippers front office trying to tank, the Clippers have been on a tear and seem sure to make the playoffs. That will result in the Celtics getting their first round pick in the 2019 draft. If the Clippers had been a lottery team, the pick would have been deferred at least a year and potentially become a second round pick.

At the same time, the overachieving Sacramento Kings have been losing and won't make the playoffs. We'll get their lottery pick (unless it's #1 and goes to Philadelphia).

Meanwhile, our rights to the Memphis pick (top 8 protected) looks like it will defer to the future and that's a good thing. It's top 6 protected in 2020 and unprotected in 2021.

Looking at a recent mock draft, the Celtics would have the #14 (Sacramento), #18 (LA Clippers), and #23 (own) picks.

I thought the Celtics looked real good sweeping Indiana.

I'm optimistic we've got a good shot against Milwaukee.

I read a speculative article a week or so ago. Basically, it goes like this:

1. Kevin Durant picks up his final year option, assuming...
2. Golden State trades him...
3. to play with his buddy Kyrie Irving on the Celtics.

The article said the trade would be for Gordon Hayward and a first round pick.

The trade wold be good for Golden State who are set to lose Durant for nothing.

The trade would be good for the Celtics (if the price is right) since it presumably ensures Kyrie Irving stays.

The question is whether Durant would want to come to Boston. It surprises me that everyone assumes he's going to the Knicks who are one of the most dysfunctional teams in the NBA.

That’s an interesting bit of speculation.

The Knicks are not run by Dolan anymore. The GM/President/Coach Fizdale are running the operation.

Fizdale is well respected among most top NBA players. Plus Durant would get to play in the Mecca and the Knicks have another max slot obv to add Kyrie.

Durant has always just been another guy on Curry’s Warriors. If he brought the Knicks to the promised land he would be a NYC legend and his all time NBA status would rise as such.

I didn't know he played in the NFL.

Quote:
Boston Celtics great John Havlicek, who passed away Thursday, was briefly a member of the Cleveland Browns. Paul Brown made him a seventh-round pick in 1962 (95th overall). Havlicek hadn't played football since high school, but Brown thought he could be a receiver. Havlicek spent one camp in football and wore No. 89. He played in one game – throwing a key block on a 45-yard TD run by Jim Brown. He then went on to a Hall of Fame career in basketball – even though in 1966 Art Modell tried to entice him to return to the NFL, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Draft Lottery nearly screwed us when the Lakers moved up to a top 4 pick, making it likely the Celtics would get the Memphis Grizzlies pick this year at #9.

Then, the Grizzlies moved up in the lottery to the #2 spot.

The Celtics will have the #14, #20, and #22 picks.

They have a top-6 protected Memphis pick in 2020.
