They could either sell high on Vazquez coming off one of the best seasons of his career, or sell low on Lowe coming off a bad year.
Looking at their full careers, it wouldn't be crazy to assume Vazquez will regress next season and Lowe will improve.
Yeah, know it was about money, but the trade just wasn't good from a talent perspective and even when balancing short-term and long-term, I would have preferred they just kept him, and then taken the two picks when Vazquez signed with another team in the off-season.
No reason they couldn't have Vazquez and Lowe for this year, and just paid someone to take Kawakami off their hands. Then just plug in Medlen for Vazquez in 2011. Kawakami showed enough that someone would take him as a 3rd/4th starter and pay a good chunk of his salary. Even if it costs a few million more this way, I think it is definitely worth it, but I realize the Braves have been pinching pennies since they were sold to an owner who bought them for tax purposes.
