i think that's settled for this year. we'll do min 10 max 20, and everyone gets atleast 5 picks.

we can adjust it more for the next year if need be, possibly removing the floor or doing whatever.. but that will do for now. I'll send out emails to get cuts from everyone and hopefully we can start the rookie draft sometime this week.

I support the 20 max, at least five picks adjustment.

Nitty questions: are the five picks still contingent on whether or not a team has already hit their 10 prospect floor? Or instead, are the picks also being issued based on whether they have room to add five prospects. Say they have 15 guys, do they get those 5 picks (I would assume so)?

Also, what are the options for managing the five picks if a team has met the floor, can they just trade them away? What happens to those picks if a team chooses to retain 20 prospects and not enter the draft - do they get five picks to trade away as they choose?

If a team has 10 prospects, receives 5 guaranteed picks, and trades away their top two picks, do they get two picks in the last two rounds to make sure they still get five? Or are we treating the picks like a one-time use commodity?

I'd assume you get five picks unless you choose to pass or you don't have five empty slots. My question is if I trade for another pick, do I get six picks or only my best five.

Yes they get the 5.

No imo.

If they had 10 already, no end-of-draft picks imo. If they had <10 - i think they still pick at the end of draft to get to 10.

You get 6, or however many you traded for. Unless you're somehow up past 20 then no more.

above sound ok?

Life would be much easier if we just went to a straight five round draft, all picks tradeable, 20 minor leaguers allowed. All these questions keep coming up because we keep making things complicated.

Anyway, can we get a decision on whether you can trade for extra picks or whether you only get your best five?

Agreed, but if we went to this system, then the trade market for picks would dry up almost completely, no? I would need a lot to trade a pick if I weren't able to replace it with a late-round add-on.

Anyway, sounds like we've got a mostly-agreed-upon system, and that's cool. I'm still not super into the fact that we're going to see fewer prospects dropped every year, but I'm fine to try this and see how it goes. Still seems like an improvement on the current system given our goals.

I run a league in POG that has 14 teams and a straight 5 round draft. Activity levels are pretty similar to this league. Over the last year, a pick moved on at least 46 occasions, so it really doesn't seem to be a barrier to people trading. Admittedly, we do have a different contract structure, which helps as well, as there are more rental-type players, but picks and prospects move around all the time.

Apologies. I missed that this had already been answered. Phone posting is hard, apparently.

I think it's OK. I'm just a bit worried that there might be some parts of it that are exploitable. For example, if we say people who have 20 prospects don't get to trade their picks, then I know if I'm near the limit, I'm going to work very carefully on the order of moves so that I get to trade my picks. I'll probably make sure that, for example, the last thing I do is trade away my last picks in a deal which will take me to 20 prospects. As long as we're OK with stuff like that probably happening then I think it's playable, and a lot better than what we have.

Yeah fair, but that might just be whatever else is different amongst the two leagues. I like the simplicity of the proposal, don't get me wrong, but it clearly increases the value of a pick, because the cost of trading the pick is now the entire value of the pick, as opposed to the value of the pick over a late-round filler pick. It would have to have some damper effect on pick trading.

Anyway, I don't think any system is perfect. The one on the table hits a lot of different points, the only apparent downside (at least to me) being that it will somewhat staunch the flow of rookies from the owned pool into the available pool. But maybe that's a pretty minor concern. Probably outweighed by the benefits, like I said.

I have too many starting pitchers (Sabathia, Wainwright, Zimmermann, Scherzer, Morrow, Medlen, Minor, Danks, Kendrick, Leake). All contracts are under $25 except Sabathia/Wainwright. I also have Teheran on my rookie list. He's pretty much guaranteed a job at present.

I also have too many catchers (Santana, Rosario, Pierzynski). Again all are cheap - $10 or less.

I could trade Albert if people are interested. Less inclined to move Rollins or Panda, but I might for the right offer. Others can be asked about but I'd need suitable replacements.

I don't have a lot of gaps. I could take an OF upgrade, or a better 3B than Panda, but I'm most likely looking for prospects/picks. Picks would probably have to be top two rounds to be worth considering. Prospects would have to be at a similar level.
Bumping for now that we have the rules in place. I'm interested in top 50-75 prospects, top 2-3 round picks or upgrades for my big league team. Picking up a little cap space would also be nice.

This shouldn't hold up the draft, BTW. Even with the two-day waiting period, all that's affected is whether I have a supplemental pick at the end of the draft, and it'll take awhile to get there. And I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the last to pick either way.

Yesterday was the initial date proposed for rookie cuts, though just by me. And now that I look at that schedule, I see that I didn't propose the rookie draft until March 3. We obviously got a bit bogged down in the rule changes, but we should probably get rookie cuts in over the next day or two. No rush on the draft though, I suppose.
