apparently having both cy young winners does not equal victory.

thats gotta be one of the best 4$ draft picks in the leagues history.

I think we'll start to see rental player-type trades in the future once that initial wave of five year contracts start to wind down, followed by a new set of expiring contracts in subsequent years.

I like the idea of expanding the minors and think this will encourage more trades involving prospects by solving the minors roster log-jam (this was a big factor in trades, at least for me) and allowing people to invest in more lower-level studs without having to worry about ditching them if they don't develop quickly enough.

Also, being able to roster so many minor leaguers may just water down their overall value, making them more tradeable. Not sure how that may play out though.

I'm going to be updating the league constitution this weekend. I'll post a list of stuff that we've sort of agreed on that needs to get a final vote, stuff that needs more open discussion first, and an updated set of rules reflecting changes we've already instituted in past years.

Thanks Pecota. Agree that we're in a weird stage right now, with the original contracts ticking over from 3 to 4 years. This has led both to the scarcity of talent available in the auction (and the inflation that was widely noted at the time), and a reluctance to move anything like a good contract. Happy to think through changes to the minors system; there have been good ones proposed. Anyway, a lot of the perceived issues will be resolved when contracts start expiring, but that doesn't mean we can't work on anything in the meantime.

Here is everything I found in this thread or recorded during a season regarding rules that have not been formally included in the league constitution. If something seems to be missing or incorrect, please let me know as these are all based on my interpretation of past posts or my own notes.

For the "ongoing discussion" section near the bottom, definitely add to that list if you'd like to see a new rule or revisit an existing one that isn't mentioned yet.

The goal is to hold a league vote to ratify any new rules prior to the auction and draft this year.

Link to current version of constitution for reference

***Unofficial Rules***

Player Auction and Salary Cap

1.) Teams are forbidden from making cuts to clear roster space during the FA auction.

2.) Players may be cut without any salary commitment during the off-season period spanning the conclusion of the World Series to the second Sunday in February (reflecting the first week pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training). After this period, any additional cuts will behave as one made during the regular season (team is responsible for full salary of cut player). Once the FA auction is completed, the freebie cuts ($4) kick in and count toward the regular season total of freebie cuts.

3.) Each team receives four “freebie” cuts to use during the season. When a freebie cut is used, $4 (league minimum salary) of the cut player’s salary is waived. The team must pay any difference in salary beyond $4. Freebie cuts kick in once the FA auction is completed. From the time the FA auction ends to the time rosters are locked on Opening Day, teams are granted two “bonus” additional freebie cuts (totaling six) to aid in pre-season roster management. These “bonus” cuts are void once the regular season starts.

Settings and Scoring

Maximum IP: 1500
Minimum IP: 1000
AB/PA Limits: None

Starting in 2013, rosters will be locked based on the start time for individual games, rather than the first game of the day. REMINDER: ADJUST SETTING BEFORE FINALIZING ROSTERS ON ESPN

Rookie Status and Minor Leagues

1.) Clarified rookie definition: any player with less than 130 ABs, 50IP, or 20 Games in Relief before the start of the season.

Rookie Draft

1.) International signings from Japan, Cuba, etc. without any prior MLB experience are considered rookies. A player must be officially signed with an MLB club before the start of the rookie draft in order to be eligible that year.

2.) If a newly drafted player is traded mid-draft, the player’s former team does not receive a compensation pick.

3.) If a team trades away multiple draft picks for a lesser number of picks and will not be able to roster 10 minor leaguers as a result, that team is awarded the final pick in the draft in order to meet the minimum required number of minor leaguers. If multiple trades of this nature occur in a single draft, the higher pick is given to the team that finalized their trade first.

Trades

1.) The regular season trade deadline is August 19 at 12PM ET. Trading opens again after the World Series ends.

2.) When a player is traded, their service clock remains the same and carries over to the new team.

Cap Hits, Waivers, and Free Agents

1.) “The Nathan Rule” – In the instance an MLB level player making more than the league minimum ($4) is cut mid-season, picked up on waivers by a new team, and retained through the next FA auction: the player’s salary will revert to either his original salary prior to being cut or remain at the winning waiver wire bid – whichever is greater. Yearly salary bump rules still apply. Note: General consensus was reached to include this rule, but more discussion is needed on specifics of salary ceiling for player to qualify.

2.) If a minor league player is cut from a team’s overall roster, the transaction is treated the same as an MLB level player being cut. The minor leaguer’s $4 salary may be covered by a freebie cut.

Payouts, Dues, and Penalties

1.) Any extra prize money that becomes available (due to owners selling their teams, etc.) will be added to the prize pool for the upcoming year. The extra money will be distributed based on each payout bracket’s share of the default $1300 prize pool, rounded to the nearest dollar. An example from one season:

$100 from a team sale and $50 from the last place penalty were added to the prize pool. Final payouts were adjusted accordingly:

$670 - 1st Place
$390 - 2nd Place
$195 - 3rd Place
$140 - 4th Place
$55 - 5th Place

***Ongoing Discussions***

1.) For “Nathan Rule” above - should the rule apply only to players making more than $4 in the year they are cut or should that value be higher before the rule kicks in? Example: Player is signed for $10, cut mid-season, and picked up on waivers for $8. If the salary ceiling for this rule is $15, then the new owner gets to keep the player for $8 because the original salary was not high enough to enact the rule. In other words, all contracts less than $15 are excluded from the rule.

2.) Permanently expand minor league rosters from 10 to 15-20. Maintain the same number of mandatory slots be filled (10).

3.) Any minor league cuts must be made prior to the start of the rookie draft. This will lock in the number of open minor league roster spots available to a team, unless a trade happens later.

3.) Possible Rule 5 draft?

I am in favor of the expanded minor league rosters. As someone having to rebuild a team, being able to improve via the minors is key since it is hard to obtain good long term players via free agency and trades right now

Before the season really gets going here...

If anyone is interested we are starting a multi-sport dynasty league in SE and some people have mentioned needing a baseball focused co-owner. Sports are Basketball, baseball and football. One draft for all 3 sports and you can trade between sports. League is $250 total, $50 per sport and $100 toward overall winner prize. Hopefully with lots of side bets..

Here is the thread if ur interested http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/15...erest-1284211/

Like, in the world, or in the pool, or what? Not so. You don't get this to yourself, man!

Definitely getting on time to start thinking about this (yes!). Imma work backwards:

-First game of the season on March 31. Rangers at Astros (yes?)
-Last thing that needs to be done before the start of the season is the free agent auction. But it's nice to give people time to make trades or roster pickups after the auction is done. So I think the auction should be done a week before. The auction takes what, two weeks, tops? So start it March 10, IMO. If we start too much earlier we lose knowledge of roles or injuries or whatever.
-Before the auction we need to make our keep/cut decisions; again, these should be left as late as is sensible, leaving time to prepare for the auction. I propose March 1. Could be later, like March 5, maybe.
-The free agent draft doesn't have to be done before the auction, but it makes sense, since it's too much to have it and the auction concurrently, and timing isn't as important with rookies. Rookie draft usually only takes 3-5 days, right? Maybe a week, tops? I say right around March 1. Then it will easily be wrapped up before the auction. Maybe just a bit after cuts to avoid clutter.
-Rookie keep/cut decisions need to come in before that, of course, though it doesn't affect preparation very much. The day before the draft is fine, except that one or two people will probably be late, so make it five days before the draft.

Holy ****, tldr. A quick summary of proposed dates:

-February 25: Rookie roster cuts must be in.
-March 1: Major-league roster cuts must be in.
-March 3: Rookie draft begins.
-March 10: Free agent auction begins.
-March 31: ****ing baseball begins.

i've been busy with other stuff this off season so i've been a bit MIA, but i'll dedicate some time to get this organized again in the next couple weeks, i'll get an updated Season 3 roster spreadsheet out and posted soon. The proposed dates Levarkin posted above seem pretty solid to me, so you all should start thinking about roster cuts about now.

Wooo baseball!

since i haven't been checking in on this too often, if anyone needs to contact me for whatever reason i'm always available on gchat/gmail - rcoburn21 at gmail dot com.

k spreadsheet is updated, ill be prettying it up a bit (and going through to make sure all minor leaguers are still currently eligible) but the 2013 Off Season tab shows all current rosters/new player years+salaries. 2013 $ is the players new salary, and Y* is the players new contract year.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...NmFKY1E#gid=16

Everyone needs to make cuts to get ready for the season. First deadline is you need to decide which minor leaguers you will cut - you will draft to get up to the minimum of 10. Need this by the ~25th.

Second deadline is you need to get your roster under 40 men and under 1000 salary. You will bid on players in the free agent auction to get up to 40 men, spending however much you can/want. edit: 30 man active roster**. 10 minor league spots

one request, if anyone made a trade that involves covering any part of a players 2013 salary please post, there was nothing in our trade notes, and i didnt see anything going through the thread, but i vaguely remember seeing that somewhere during the season.

one other thing since i just got asked, Minor Leaguers can be promoted to your regular roster too.. so it's cut/promote/keep in minors, and you fill your minors to 10 with the draft.
