A lot of very smart people all have access to (more or less) the same information.
I would argue that someone who understands the sport in question and watches all the games has a significant advantage.
I'm not sure the best researchers on the planet could beat a obsessive Slovakian hockey fan (who watches/attends as many games as possible) at Third Division Fantasy Slovakian Hockey.
