Anybody have any insight?
I think he has very good intuition and grasp how his opponents would've played some hand with some set hand ranges. This way he can get away when he is beat and pick up bluffs.

Making $$$ in poker comes from adapting vs your opponent strategies. You are winning vs bad players because if they play a lot of hands they get themselves in a lot of situations where they dont have a strong hand postflop and lossing a lot of $$$ because of that.

I believe that he can pinpoint almost every opponent's weaknesess and find a way how to exploit him.

Re: Why is Phil Ivey so good?

Masque de Z has ruined this thread. Honestly, learn how to write coherently and succinctly and your points might get read.

And criticising his call of the openshove while shortstacked (Ivey's A10 vs KQ)? Crazy. It's almost as if you have forgotten that Ivey's solitary tournament goal is to TID. He is not adverse to flipping, because he is shrewd enough to realise that his edge comes from having a big stack and utilising it post-flop. As such, he must build his stack to maximise his chance of winning. This requires winning in some marginal spots.

I honestly don't think Masque De Z understands tournament poker. Or maybe I just skimmed over the parts where he writes logically.

All of the interviews of high stakes pros seem to mention the same thing when talking about Ivey - he adapts much faster than anyone else.

Re: Why is Phil Ivey so good?

In Cardplayer magazine there was an interview with Tony G and he said this about Phil Ivey which is similar to the analysis that masque de z gave us:

"[Phil] Ivey is a great player. He has unbelievable ability, but you know, heís got that nature of gamble. He wants to gamble it all, all the time. Thatís the only thing."

Re: Why is Phil Ivey so good?

I think it's interesting to note that Ivey has been around since before online poker, crushed back then, after the boom, crushed it also, won bracelets in a lot of different games, still crushing. It all points back to the point that poker is a game of adapting and Phil Ivey can certainly adapt, this I believe is the true key to becoming a true poker God like Ivey- Never settling because the game changes every single day, so must the player

Re: Why is Phil Ivey so good?

a) strong work ethic and competitiveness
b) tonnes of experience (which naturally breeds skill)
c) doesn't tilt
d) doesn't fear losing money
e) his reputation induces fear into weaker players

We can debate on whether or not he's an intellectual genius or not, but regardless of how you define him, he's probably got such good results because he's worked so hard at it, and has the self-control to not blow up.

Only Phil Hellmuth Jr. himself is the number one PH fan.

That's a tell that gave away your latest gimmick. Has to be, amirite?

I'll give you credit where it's due, though. You do know how to exploit the donkeys that play marginal crap very well.

So what? The guy has dominated the game completely since before the boom, has more table time than anyone in the game and his results speaks for themselves. There was a thread in the Poker on TV thread looking for a video where Phil got it in behind and there wasn't video to be found lol. (short stack doesn't count". He is just the best to ever play the game, no discussion.

Never getting it in behind does not mean one is playing well; probably quite the opposite actually.

EDIT: Well, I guess that this actually depends on what size stack is being played with.

Actually, apart from cheating at a very high level that's the most likely explanation.

How embarrassing.

It looks worse than it really is. Play is pretty standard here, and with just three way action, no reason to believe anyone would necessarily have just the one set of combinations that would make the higher end of the straight. ( J, x ), sets, and flush draws with overs could be in play.

He got just a little too rambunctious with the dead end when he went all-iin. Ivey channeled his "Inner Fish" at the wrong time, it happens.
