a is the frequency that makes the other opponent indifferent to betting or checking assuming a 0 equity hand.... for instance

If btn bets vs bb and has 0 equity and he bets 66% pot, then a is

.66/1.666 = ~40%

If bb folds =>40% then btn can bet atc (any two cards) profitably

----

This is also called MDF, or minimum defense frequency. But, try not to get "too" attached to this number.

Depends what you mean by "over folding".

GTO would certainly having your calling less often with cards to come when you are at a strong range disadvantage.
