Cash games: can someone clarify size of open raises live vs. online Cash games: can someone clarify size of open raises live vs. online

I bought a cash game training app on GooglePlay. It's actually quite good (interactive with great feedback on your moves ..I think it's better than its 3.9 rating). If someone wants to know its name please PM me as I think advertising is disallowed on this site. They also have a Tournament version.

I think it's geared to live cash $1/$2 because open-raises of, say, JTs or KQs from middle-position is recommended as 7-9 BB on average.

For online NL10-NL25 microstakes is 7-9 BB excessive for a MP open-raise? (I would think 3-4 BB would be more appropriate online).

Thanks.

If you go to llsnl and look at some of the HH's you will get an idea of how much people raise pre. My standard open is 4x with an additional x for each limper. So with 2 limpers I will raise to 30 in a 2/5 game. In 1/2 people tend to size up a bit - that being said 7-9x is more than I have seen for a straight open and not isoing any limpers.

I agree with your thoughts that this is geared to live. Pre BF on line my open was 3.5x + 1x for each limper. Live sizing is larger than on line

Given no limpers 7-9 BB seems excessive for any game outside of the most agro. Online I open 3x pretty standardly but have seen others go between 2.5-4x as a standard open so nothing in there is surprising. Live 1-2 games you likely want to open around 4-6x with bigger sizing if there’s action in front of you. 2-5 and up usually plays closer to the 3-4x sizing in general depending on the table.

In good 1/2 live games, you can still open to $20 and get a couple callers.

10 years ago, making it $30 with AA at 1/2 was pretty standard even in larger public card rooms like the Bellagio.

3x open in the 1-2 games I play is just begging to have a huge multiway pot. Usually 4-6x is where I am and I'll bet a tad more if raising over a few limps.. I am finding many players that make their open range easier to read by Limping with junk, Smaller raises with ok hands and large raises PF with premiums.

If you open a lot in 1/2 live it wont matter the amount as you will get 3-4 callers who are just wanting to snap you off, especially if you haven't been taking down many pots. I mix up my opens at $7, $11 and $16, mostly with no regard for position or holding. I will make some adjustments in late position if there has been some limping, but I will mix in the $7 LP 'open' with premiums into 4 limpers looking for someone who slow played to pop it up so I can pounce on them!

If my stack size grows then I'll tend to open bigger more often to protect my profit, even though that is definitely discussion worthy. Shortening stacks at 1/2 via straddle or opening bet sizes can lead to opponents getting too stubborn and calling/shoving much lighter ... which obviously creates a problem if you've been bluffing or bullying too much. GL

PS ... To answer the question more directly .. if someone is consistently opening for 6-7x online they wont last too long in a reg filled table/site.
