Understanding the "why" behind GTO turn play on this hand Understanding the "why" behind GTO turn play on this hand

Hey all,

I played a hand recently that I then studied in GTO Wizard and I have a few questions so I can understand better turn play.

100BB eff., Hero on the BTN vs. BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.4 BB) Hero has Q T

fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to 2.5 BB, fold, BB calls 1.1 BB

Flop: (5 BB, 2 players) Q 8 T
BB checks, Hero bets 1.7BB, BB calls

Turn: (8.4 BB, 2 players) Q 8 T A
BB checks, Hero bets 6BB, BB calls

I questioned the size of my turn bet, but thought it was mostly a bet for sure. But when I analyze the hand in GTO Wizard I noticed:
  • the solver checks a lot with all but the strongest of 2-pair
  • the solver bets top pair with double the frequency of 2-pair

I'd like to understand why this is the case. I believe I should check middling hands (wrt to opponent's range). I understand checking some stronger hands on the turn to protect the river range. And I think I can understand betting some hands that block the opponent's nuts because we should get raised less - could this be some of the bets with TP?

But I'm confused here on why there are so many more bets with TP, because its lower in my range wrt equity. Would like to understand the theory here, thx.

Edit: screenshot below shows CO but I was on the BTN. Don't have a sub so can't reload hah.

lots of reasons but mainly because Ax has close to the same value as QT but QT blocks the worse hands that can call you like JT QJ etc, whereas Ax doesn't. Also, we have a need for some strong hands in our check back turn range to prevent villain from being able to go too thin on river

Thanks, makes sense. I make this mistake a lot.

QT not very strong and rarely has enough value to go for 3 streets, also the hands that you fold out have next to 0% equity against you like lower pairs.
Ax has less value but specifically with the guthsot or flush draw it has more potential to go for 3 streets and it denies equity from lower pairs that can outdraw you to 2p
