I was in a Full Tilt tourney earlier today and this situation arise:

I had chip stack of 63,500 and I opened the pot with pocket kings for 5000 (blinds 1000/2000 antes 250) and got a call from the person to my left. The big blind shoved all-in for the remainder of his chips, about 6660 chips total. When it got back to me the only options the FT game engine gave me were fold or call his bet. No option to raise which was I wanted to do to push out the caller to my left.

I have been playing on-line for two years and in home poker games and casino daily tourney for four years and I had never come across this situation before. Did FTs game engine handle this correctly?? If this post should be somewhere else in this forum please move it there!!! I'm sure that some of you 2+2ers will set me straight.

The big blind's raise is a partial raise, it would be illegal if it were not an all-in. The minimum raise for a player who is not all in is 5,000.

A partial raise does not give you the option to reraise, it counts as a call for that purpose.

Had you thought ahead enough, it might have been smarter to raise 2,000. The big blind is likely to push, and you then could get your all-in reraise. Of course, you also could have been called and gotten a flop with Aces.

Thanks, Aaron. I feel a bit embarrassed that I didn't know that rule. What about the third guy in the hand, the one who called my initial raise. Can he reraise or is he subject to the same rule as me?

The thought crossed my mind to min raise, but I had five people between myself and the big blind (the short stack) and I didn't want to many people in the hand. Now that I think of it my raise to 5k was a small ball play and I did open my self up a bit to callers. The flop was very 6-8-9 with two clubs, turn was 2 hearts and river was 10 clubs. I checked it all the way down and folded when the first caller bet the river. He had pocket 7's for a straight. Coulda been a lot worse I suppose.

the third guy can only call or fold also. The guy's shove is essentially only a call given he didn't meet the minimum requirement of reraise amount.

it's best to pay attention to stack sizes, and if you see the BB with 6666 chips total and 2000 in the pot already, it's best to just make it 6667 total, tells the table you're paying attention and want to isolate him
