I like heavily accented English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-w-vk7WYbY

FIDE never fail to deliver, lol. After having to endure those Tretyakov Gallery pieces last year, we're now getting a 2 minute piece on a chess museum on infinite loop.

Yeah Svidler is an incredibly good commentator imo.

Sopiko has been reduced to sprinkling in "yeah"s and chuckles, anticipating individual words from Svidler's sentences, and asking the occasional question about whether a certain move is possible. Seems awkward.

ETA: Actual original thoughts!

Just another +1 to the Svidler praise. He's doing a damn good job.

Magnus already setting the tone for the match, hf defending those slightly worse positions Vishy dude

I hope they add Anish Giri's commentary to the mix. Apparently he's under the table tickling Sopiko.

So who comes up with the idea of "let's just make a 2 minute segment that will be the only thing we show during breaks, and we'll just show it 350 times in the next two weeks"?

Well, the alternative is apparently this highly unsettling image:

So I'm OK with it.

Zzz, I don't regret sleeping during the round (and recall that I'm in the same time zone as Sochi).

You have to spend more time learning your (leg) openings.

I guess this is sort of a win for Anand because it looked like he was in trouble early and he managed a draw. Or maybe it's a win for Carlsen because he had black and got a draw.

Then again maybe it's just a draw.

A great start IMO, tension in the game right from the beginning. Looks like we can dispense with the feeling out process this time.

I don'y know why I ever watch the chat kibitzing surrounding the games. 13-year-old dorks crowing over engine evaluations after every move inevitably sends me into major life tilt.

Superficial evaluations at that. It's hilarious when they jizz their pants over what looks like a blunder at low depth but really isn't.

The entire chess community at large has become way too dependant on engines imo. The average chess spectater seems to confuse engine analysis with their own analysis and form their opinions of positions based off of what the engine spits out

There were a couple of players at my old club who were particularly awe struck at the mighty engines and hearing their 'analysis' the week after a club championship game would probably break genevas laws about cruel and unusual punishment

v true about reliance on engines. I enjoyed svidler's analysis on the official site and didn't even check in at chessbomb for that reason.

As for the 1st game well it is worrying for vishy that this is a repeat of last time. Pretty equal position no real danger, he plays some inaccuracies which are unforced and Magnus piles on pressure.

Really would love vishy to play some real attacking chess to give himself a fighting chance and put magnus to the test.
