I don't know, I didn't analyze the position, just intuition.

aren't it going to be a drawn Queen ending now?

...d2. Nxd2 Qxd2. Qxc4 seems like a draw to me

yeah it's a draw both ways, Qe3+ is good enough for a draw too as white cannot do anything else except Qf2 because of f5.

Me thinks

Anand made a different move from the same position on moves 34 and 36, so he must think he has at least some chance for a win.

Anand refuses the repetition - NOW who's refusing the draw, eh?

44.. Qe7

Looks like a draw to me. White's Queen has to baby sit or Qe1+ and d1=Q gets White's Knight off the board. And on first glance it doesn't look like the White King can get near that d2 pawn because the Black Queen is on the e-file. Placing the Queen on e2 doesn't help b/c that blocks the King's path towards the d2 pawn.

This still makes me laugh: This prohibition is being violated by ChessBase

Once again, welcome to the Slav Defence - Anand deviating first.

When I look at the position after 16.Ke2 I have to ask myself: Why should white win this by force? Why go in this line again and again and again if you got nothing, have nothing and will get nothing even against all of Anand's deviations?

The penalty for violating the prohibition is that they advertise your site.

Topalov's 18. a5 was the first deviation from a pair of games in my database, both played by Farrukh Amonatov as black. 18. Bb6 and 18. Rac1 were the previous tries (the former drawing, the latter winning).

What else? Seems like the only sensible move.
Anand will have to work a fair bit to hold this.

Really don't like 28 ... Bxd6

But I guess it had to be done since the Knight was giving him such a problem in activating the bishop on g6

Time going to start to make them sweat a bit soon (mainly Anand)

I would think the bishop ending is drawn here. I can't see white getting through

I think this is now just a draw. Topalov should not play endgames cause he really just does not seem to play it that good.

This looks winnable for Toplaov to my untrained eye

edit: maybe there is actually a winning plan with exchanging the h-pawns and trying for kh6

I don't see it either. Computers probably go nutz about white's "advantage", but this is one of the cases, where a lot of us could hold against Rybka easily.

The only way for Topalov is to create a passed pawn on the kingside, deflect the black king to the h-file, use his d-pawn to win the white bishop and then clear up the queenside, but this won't happen because stage 1 of the plan cannot be realized.

Wait, I found a win:
40....Ba4
41. Kg5 Kg7
42. g4 Bc6 (attacking the f-pawn)
43. f4 h6!! mate
0-1

why would you first exchange pawns and then try for Kh6, when black bishop can then defend h7?

There is a possible winning plan for White if he can play h4-h5 gxh5 Kxh5 then Kh6, Bg7 and g4-g5-g6 because the King gets to f6. But I think White can't achieve this if Black plays accurately.
