That's exactly my point. After seing Kamsky games, Karjakin-Carlsen, Topalov-Kamnsky...... i think why on earth would somedody choose to be in that position? More even in a WCmatch. I would really like a strong player to explain me that. Cause even Kasparov had problems with that (i mean, not that line specifically). Would be also nice to know some stadistics about grunfelds in world championships.

Yeah babyyyyyy

Nice ****ing win Anand

It's pretty sick that he won the position after 16. bxa3

Gotta love those positional pawn sacrifices!!

Anand, please don't lose to home prep in game 2

This game was surprisingly enjoyable at least from the aesthetic point of view.

But I'm expecting Topalov's defense was probably not so hot. He is not the type to go for passive defense, but maybe that would have been best.

Did somebody here post that on another site?

If so, please don't do it in the future. 2+2 doesn't want itself spammed on other sites.

Is this really a surprise? Hasn't he played a lot of d4 in the past few years? I assumed he'd play both d4 and e4 in the match.

Notice that the Catalan is just a tempo up Grünfeld, so this structure seems to be Anand's new favorite setup.
Why do you say this? The pawn structure is considerably different.

During commentary of game 2, GM Nigel Short improvised a poem after Black's weak 34...Ra2 that was crushed by White's 35. Nb4.

Were you telling li-i-i-ies, the knight b4!
Was I so unwi-i-i-ise, the knight b4!
Now today I find, you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the knight b4!

Actually, even 24.Nxf6 in the first game was prepared with Rybka

Im not sure why we cant have Rybka vs Rybka matches?
Most of the moves bears its stamp anyway.

Great game! The commentators seem to agree that Topalov's defense wasn't best. Still, Anand deserves huge props for extracting the most out of those mistakes. The game reminded me of the Kramnik-Topalov 2006 game only there Kramnik drifts a bit and weakens his kingside unnecessarily only to let black's knights and ultimately rook in. From about move 26 on.

Obviously in today's game Anand kept his king super safe and forced the action on the queenside. Excellent, excellent play.

What will Anand play next round as black? Gruenfeld again? Nimzo/QGD? Semi-slav?

It would be cool to see him play the same variation of the Gruenfeld as the first game, but this time win.

They put the kings in the center to show everyone the score. I do not remember how it goes so I guess the black king in the center means a loss.

I think the DGT electronic board detects a draw, win, or loss when you put the kings on the appropriate squares in the middle of the board (on the 2 white squares = white win, etc), and it's complete coincidence that White's king was on e4 anyway. could be wrong on this though.

lol, I actually didnt see the two kings next to each other cuz first thing i noticed was both the white and black pawns on the back rank..

There are no pawns on the back rank. There are a couple pawns on the h-file, though.

I just read this on Silvio Danailov's page on chessgames.com.

Quote:
From the Ottawa Chess Club board:
GM Kevin Spraggett:

"I know a little bit about Topalov because he lives in Spain, less than 200 miles from where I live in Portugal. From time to time I see him, and once I even slept over at his apartment. He is a very simple and kind person. Easy to like, too.
In Bulgaria he was a chess prodigy of sorts, but not like Kasparov. His talent developed in a different way and rhythm. He had no state support. But when he was about 12 years old Danailov, his actual trainer and companion, spoke to Topalov’s family and got permission to personally train him.

Danailov took Topalov to his apartment and told him ‘From now on, you live here and this will become your new home. I am not just your trainer, but I am also your mother and your father. I am your cook. I am the one who will wash your clothes. I am the one who will pay your bills and expenses to tournaments. All I want from you is to think only about chess!’’

Topalov developed very quickly under Danailov’s guideance [sic]. He became a super star in the chessworld by the time he was 19. This relationship has remained just as strong until today. Topalov does not have a girlfriend or any real friends in the classical meaning of it. He has only his chess, but he would not change his universe for any other.

And he has Danailov. Danailov is paid, I am told, 50 percent of everything that Topalov wins, and while many might think that is excessive, the Topalov-Danailov relationship is very unique. And mutually beneficial. And now it seems as though their faith in each other will make history in this tournament."

Thanks those who were watching on chess.com today, I was the one doing the commentary with Josh (though I didn't go on the camera much!). Josh was rather tired during it (well we both were but him especially), and I think his body language kind of gave that off but he still did good analysis from what I could tell. Pretty sure we'll be doing it again in a few days (game 5 or 6 not certain) so be sure to tune in again!

Definitely very good analysis and thank you for that. Not too surprising that you guys were tired given how early the games start and how rarely chess players see a sunrise

The good thing about your commentary was that you did without using an engine. It was a step by step process of finding the best moves instead of the "deus ex machina".

People can learn a lot on how to think in chess by simply following how you reached your conclusions. Chess isn't straight foward after all, it is a process similar to bubblesearch. You just don't calculate every line to the end, you jump back and forth between ideas and compare the pros and cons. It is a discussion, usually with yourself or in this case with a partner.

Am I the only one that finds the table/chess set/surroundings rather....spartan?

This is a world champion match! Shouldn't things be bling-blinged up a bit? It looks like they're playing in near a wall in some randon warehouse, on some randon table with second-hand office chairs....

"23...Kf7?? Losing on the spot. It looks like Anand forgot his preparation."

I am a total patzer at this game but the fact that this might actually be true is really disappointing. The image of chess in my mind is not two guys with huge teams gameplanning on computers for months up to the match, then they show up at the table and play their memorized moves and whoever forgets a move loses.
