The position is tactically too complicated for the human brain

Agree. Especially after so many hours already played today and in the match as a whole. Vishy would have to be pretty disappointed after this. Maybe the better players can see it, but Rdd7 wasn't clear at all to me.

Anand can also still suffer a meltdown in timetrouble (down to 2-3 minutes now) and lose.......although a losing sequence IS hard to find lol....looks like a draw now

Anand admirably still fighting for the win....gentle but tough MTF...Topalov trying to blitz him into submission. No more winning chances for Topalov after pawns are off....less pressure on Anand and he can try to weave this into a win again.....one of the best games in WC matches as far as I can recall, not faultless, but in a man-to-man-combat-no-prisoners-taken style

yeah this is going to be a long game.

I don't know if anand can win it, prob not, but he can never loose the game so he might as well try.

hey ima chess noob but have really enjoyed watching these matches and learning the game. i was wondering about a specific spot if anyone can clarify. on move 61 of round 9 when Topalov has a queen and two pawns vs two rooks and a pawn for Anand, Topalov moves the pawn on A5 to A4 which seemed like a move to backup the B3 pawn. If he moved the B3 pawn up to B2 however it wouldn've been one square away from promotion and he also would've threatened the knight on D5 with his queen. does anyone know why he chose A4 instead or what the thinking was behind that play?

After 61... b2, then 62. Rh5, and white can't stop mate on h8 without giving up his queen.

pawn to b2 blocks the queen's attack on the d2-knight, so the d5-rook is free to move. And it can move very well: 62. Rh5! threatens checkmate (you can see this, right?) and it's almost unstoppable.

ahhh yea i missed how the rook was pinned down to protecting the knight at that point. wow chess is more intricate than i ever knew, thanks.

ooh...a Grunfeld today - after blowing the bishop ending last time as black and the opportunities he had yesterday, he better bring his friggen A game

Another game where they fight over structures. Very similar to yesterday in a way. It is almost like they were starting from tabias. What does this mean? It means that with white they let the opponent develop unhindered and set up a certain structure and only then they are trying to prove that it is inferior. It is very difficult for white to prove in scientific way that black has to lose the game despite full development and no obvious weakness.

In case you were wondering, 15...Na5 is the natural choice for a Grünfeld player.

Every exchange gets black closer to the endgame where he has the pawn majority on the queenside.

In case that all rooks get exchanged, watch them trying to aquire the Q+N vs. Q+B tandem.

why h3?

h3 just opens a hole for the king. In case black plays moves like Qb4 white can play Qc7 without having to worry about mate.

Anand has many options now. He can try to play in the b7-g2 diagonal with f5 or he can play against the center with e6 or he has a waiting move with h5. I think he is certainly ok in this position.

yea, looks like Anand did really well with Black in the opening this time

This is a typical position for Makogonov's rule: Improve your worst piece! This position also shows the danger of stereotype thinking. Nc6 by Anand improves the worst piece but loses on the spot.
