Carlsen figures as longs as there are more than kings on the board, he always has a chance of winning. Navara a good sport about it in the interview.

Van Wely doing work: "but then I blundered, and what do you expect, it's going to be a tough day yeah" and still on an even score.

Gashimov's faith in the Benoni is interesting. I feel like the top players do a good job picking it to pieces, but it might be selective memory on my part, and maybe there aren't enough games of his against the super-elite anyway to resolve that question.

Sachdev

In the B group game between Smythe & Lahno all kind of pieces are hanging for ages now but after black just played 25...,Bf5 while I type this it seems that Smythe has a dubble exchange offer and a forced way to get in a winning Q-RR ending. Pretty spectaculair game.

By Smythe, do you mean Cmilyte? That's the name I see, and I guess it could be the same. Does that mean that Cmilyte is pronounced like Smythe?

Timman just blundered horribly in group B. In a position where nothing much was going on he went for a bishop sacrifice on h7. I guess he wanted to win a pawn, but it simply doesn't work.

The most exciting game in group A today is Karjakin-Topalov. Very entertaining to watch. Also it is incredible how Carlsen comes up with winning chances out of nothing.

carlsen does it again. turn a drawish position into a strategic crush. soo impressive play all his wins this tournament, in his own league

Obviously it's easy to say after the fact, but it seemed really obvious before Nd7 that he'd need to do something about the h pawn.

Chmileete - Lahno ended with a crazy rook and stalemate.

It's Viktorija in Lithuanian, but pronounced pretty much the same as Victoria, J is sort of silent.

Topalov has a tablebase losing position now, incredible how he threw away that game. Still hard to win for Kariakin probably.

Wow this is (mirrored) like a really famous endgame Jan Timman had against Velimirovic.

Game was adjourned at some moment close to this position and general concensus was that you couldn't win it because of the 50 moves rule. He and his secondants found a way though.

Don't know all the details, maybe someone else can chime in but I remember reading about it and it's a pretty cool story.

If you google Timman - Velimirovic first result is that game.

I would say it's almost impossible for Karjakin to find a win but I hope he surprises me.

Game was adjourned after move 64

dunno, the guys over at ICC seem to have it figured out even without looking at the tablebase.

Pretty easy win now for karjakin

hmmm well ok, it seems that either the position of his king and bishop was unlucky for Topalov or he just blundered somewhere, clear win for Karjakin now.
