This was a standard 3 day/move game on chess.com. I'm kind of proud of being able to see this, so it's a half brag, half wondering if I'm as far ahead as I think I am here. Thoughts?

I was Black.

(I did play it out, but made the mistake of trying to make a move while listening to my wife yell at my kids while on the phone after a stressful day at work, so I basically gave my queen away and just resigned after that. Oops.)

Personally, I'm not a big fan of 5. Bg5. I don't know if it's book or not, but for the rest of the game that bishop seems to cause you more trouble than what it's worth. It's a decent idea, blocking the e-pawn, but other than that....meh. Be3 looks better and gives another piece to eventually break through on d4 with. That d4 square does become important later on in the game.

Instead of 15. a4, 15. e5?! looks like something worth a try. Your bishops at that point didn't have much freedom, but sac'ing the pawn to break up black's structure and unleash your f3 bishops seems good. Plus, you'll have a nice outpost if you ever want it on d5 or e4 and really put pressure on his center cluster of pawns. The game still seems ok at that point though. But those bishops really killed the kingside, being in front of your pawns. A nice, fianchetto'd kingside would have prevented the storming of the pawns and rooks, but that stupid dark squared bishop just gets in the way.

You didn't really give your queen away either. You got two rooks for a queen and a pawn, and two rooks in theory beats a queen, but it's really difficult to prove. Besides, everything after 23. Kh2 is forced. Really the only reason you had a lost endgame wasn't the material, but rather his queen was much more active than your two rooks at the end and the more pawns there are in an endgame, the better the queen is against the two rooks.

The final position is totally won for Black. You have much more material and his king position is bad, too. You don't even have to do something special to win. Just push your pawns. His open king position means that he can't move his rooks freely because you should be able to pick one of by double-attacking king and rook (LDPO - loose pieces drop off). Just make sure you don't drop a pawn for nothing and that your king is sheltered from a possible perpetual. In fact, the white player should resign this.

34. ...Qd4+ followed by ...Qxe5 is better.

I do like the look of 23.... Nf4+ 24Kh1 Nxd3 25 Qxd3 Qxb2 winning the piece back.

26... Rh2 looks more accurate as well (27Rg1 Bg4+ 28Kf2 Bd4+ 29Kf1 Bxg1 30Kxg1 Bxd1 followed by Rxg2)

Agree about 34....Qd4+ and Qe5 as well - I'd actually like to keep the bishops on since it would allow you to exploit his open king more easily but as played it should be enough to win.
