Opponent is 1782

3mins no inc's

I don't study or have any tools to assist me

It's quite a funky start and think i might have a good shot at pulling this off until move 16 dxe6 which allows his Knight to attack my Queen and Bishop

why would you give a piece for 2 pawns in a semi-close position on move 12, that is the question...

you sacrifice to have some momentum and attack .
In semi close position with no open lines to attack and no threats , you just lose.

i'm not great in semi or closed positions so tried to open it up and pull 3 pawns back from the sacrifice but as you saw move 16 i got the other pawn but paid for it by losing another key piece. If i get the 3rd pawn and keep all my main pieces i believe a strong pawn push would cramp him and allow me promotion later.

You are a very optimistic player for sure ...

Read and think more on what i said .
Hint : too many pieces are present and no attack or open lines and no momentum or activity.
Pawn will get block easilly and with the pieces up, black will win them all or creates attack on your weak points elsewhere.

Instead of dxe6 you should push the pawn to d6, it looks like White ends up with a pretty good position there.

However montrealcorp is right, your sacrifice on c4 was not very good if Black defends well (for example 13...Qc7 or 13...Nb6 instead of 13...Nc6). It can work in a 3-minute game at your level but at longer time controls and against better opponents it will be punished more often than not.

In this pawn structure you should be playing for the advance f4-f5. Instead of 10.Nd2, I would consider either 10.f5 immediately or a slow buildup with 10.g3 with the idea of Bh3, 0-0, and eventually pushing f5.

Also in the opening your move 7.Qd3 is unnecessary. You don't mind taking back with the pawn if Black captures on c3 - it strengthens your centre and opens up a square for your Bishop on a3.

A lot of people don't understand bishop sacs and bishop + knight attacks on f7 and f2. I still have issues with it myself but I've gotten much better. If my opponent pins my knight and then just throws away the bishop pair for no apparent reason and/or sacs on f2 or f7 in the situation you've described, it's a pretty good indication of where the game is going after that provided I don't make any mistakes or allow myself to go in the tank for too long and look up to find myself in time trouble.
